Hola Chicas!
Immediately following actress and comedienne Kim Coles’ decision to Big Chop, we discussed her natural hair journey and experiences, the impact it’s had on her life, and her goal for healthy hair. More than anything, Kim wants to embrace her natural texture and achieve huge, ‘block your view at the movie theater’, healthy hair. The bigger the better has always been my motto, and thanks to the havoc the pregnancy wreaked on my body, I too am working toward healthier, stronger curls. Since we all know that healthy hair is a process, not a goal, we thought it would be fun and productive to challenge ourselves, and you gals too!
Starting tomorrow, February 1, 2011, CurlyNikki.com, in collaboration with actress and comedienne Kim Coles, will begin its six month nationwide “Grow Out” Challenge which will last from February 2011 through July 2011. This will be the perfect time for thousands of women across the U.S. to embrace their natural hair and have invaluable resources at their fingertips to help them along their journey of personal growth.
The 2011 Grow-Out Challenge evolved out of Kim Coles’ decision to embrace her natural hair, and has become an extension of her self- empowering passion project in which she is asking all women to open their G.I.F.T.S (Gratitude. Intention. Forgiveness. Triumph. Self-Love). Those who accept the challenge are encouraged to blog about their experiences at naturallycurly.com/kimcolesgrowout.
Each month of the challenge, Jessicurl will select three lucky entrants to receive a Personal Hair Prescription as well her Confidence Collection, which includes the following products: Hair Cleansing Cream, Confident Coils, Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and a Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment. Winners also receive a Kim Coles G.I.F.T. tote bag. Over the six-month period, Jessicurl will give $4000 worth of products to 18 lucky participants. The finale of the challenge will feature a live broadcast of Kim Coles —along with thousands of nationwide participants—celebrating the accomplishments of embracing their true natural hair.
How to Participate:
You are encouraged to blog about your grow-out experiences at naturallycurly.com/kimcolesgrowout. The six-month long journey to natural hair starts Feb. 1, 2011, at midnight and will end on July 31, 2011, at 11:59 p.m.
Guidelines:
- Drink at least 64 oz of water each day (or half your body weight in ounces)
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet
- Take a multi vitamin and other beneficial supplements
- Handle hair gently at all times
- Seal your ends every time you moisturize
- Minimize (direct) heat usage
- Deep treatment at every wash session
- Develop and follow a consistent hair routine, tailored to your specific needs and desired goals
- Document your progress, observations, and frustrations on your personal blog
- Encourage your fellow curlies by sharing tips, advice, and chiming in on their blogs
- Have fun and enjoy the journey!
Over the next week, I’m going to share my modified hair regimen, dietary supplements, and my weekly meal plan. I’ll also help you develop a solid, do-able hair routine! In the meantime, check out this post from 2008 on growin’ to new lengths.
Together we will embark on the sometimes difficult, yet completely rewarding, challenge of maximizing growth potential, maintaining length, and revealing your healthiest hair possible.
I accept the challenge! This is just in time because if my hair could cry, it would!
Definitely!
Glad you guys came up with this! I need someone as a "coach" figure to keep me on track with my hair! Can't wait until July!!
Yes! I'm in, I need this more than anyone.
Oh, are you guys working with hair and health? http://hairandhealth.blogspot.com/2011/01/3in6-challenge-rules.html
These are almost identical.
I love Kim Coles! This is perfect timing and I definitely plan to participate. I need to figure out a regime and stick to it, once and for all.
Carlene, they are FAR from identical. And these hairrules are common knowledge. I'm in Nikki!
I'm in! Hi Kim!!!!!!!
I'm in!
I accept! Let's do it!

I'm so in! Thanks Kim! woowoowoo!
This sounds great. Can transitioners participate?
I am in. Just in time for my third anniversary after my BC.
I am definitely in. I big chopped in September and currently 6 months pregnant. I plan on nursing and I know my hair is going to go through a little storm.
I have a serious question! Can using conditioner in your hair as a styler be considered a deep condition? It makes a lot of sense to me.(straightface)
Everyone is welcome! TWAs, transitioners, BSL veterans! This is about healthy hair ladies 🙂 So excited! I'm putting together my new regimen tonight… it won't change much, but I will be doing much less manipulation.
Im definitely on board and this challenge coincides with my own personal challenge :). Grown on ladies with your bad selves!
I'm in!
I love this challenge I just found a great hair routine for myself and now I am happy to join with other naturals.
I'm in!
I'm in Nik! I'm scheduled for a trim this week. We'll see if it happens as the weather in NJ has sucked for the last month=( and a huge snow storm is predicted for the day of my appointment. I want to get rid of about an inch of my hair and get a straighter perimeter (took scissors haphazardly to my own hair about 3 weeks ago. I know!). Then, think I'm going to try rocking twists in updos for the next month (was inspired by TiaShauntee). I already got myself together and got back in the gym at the beginning of February and have been eating well and taking a multi and Biotin every night. My desire is to see if I can achieve full WL by June/July. We'll see!! Game hat ON! LOL!
Shelli
Oops, I mean got myself back in the gym at the beginning of JANUARY=).
Shelli
I am so game! But I need some kind of a routine. KIM COLES! Love her, thanks for doing this!
With tranitioners could we do protective styles through out the 6 months?
YAY!!!! I am so in. Already created my blog. I am oober excited! Yep I said oober. LOL
Can we have Kim's earrings as a prize too?
I.am.down. =D
I will be posting some sample routines that you can fit with your lifestyle… a starting point if you will 🙂 I'll also post my routine. If protective styles work for you, rock 'em! If not, there are other ways to maintain length 🙂
I'm in! I'm excited about participating!
i'm so in can't wait
I'll do this along with Loo (3 in 6 challenge). Points 1 – 6 are similar to hers. Yeah, great minds think alike! I'm optimistic!
I don't know that I am quite ready to give up on my protective styling. I've been transitioning for 16 months with about an inch to go. Anyone else apprehensive? I have a plan that I have been working. Maybe I'll join you guys in March.
yay Im in! Kim your hair is gorgeos and just like mine. I can't wait to hear what your routine is!
I'm in!
Love this and I'm totally in and accept the challenge. I've been a Kim fan since the In Living Color days. Her hair is beautiful and I can't wait to see how it will blossom over the next few months.
Count me in!!!!!
I am in…this came right on time. I just big chopped Friday for the second time. My hair was about 6inches and now it is about 1 inch. I had to chop because my ends were uneven and the ends were a wreck. I accept the challenge to finally have healthy
This is right on time and just in line with my new years resolution. Count me in!
Count me in!
I'm excited for this! What a great collaboration. I am So in!
Yes! Yes! Yes! I totally blogged about this yesterday! My hairstylist cut mine waaaay too short this weekend. I have relatively short hair anyways, but the back is less than 2 inches long now. That does not mix too well with curly hair. So I am on a mission to grow it out long again. 🙂
I accept the challenge with relish! 🙂
I'm in!!!!!
I'm in!
I'm in!! 🙂
Im in too 🙂
I bought a journal today to keep up with my hair progress, I'm definitely in!!
I'm in…I'm just about 2 1/2 years natural after over 30 years of relaxing and I couldn't be happier. I'm trying to pamper and grow my hair even longer, and this sounds like a perfect way to kick off the new year!
Count me in!!! I am currently transitioning and I plan to BC in March. At that point I want to try an ayurvedic regimen. Right now I am gathering all the products and herbs i need to start my natural journey. I am so excited.
I'm all ready doing a hair growth challenge for the whole year, but I'm down for this one too. Can't say I'll do the vitamins or weekly deep conditioners though. ^_^
I'm in. I just did the big chop! I have a fourth of a inch of hair ! This is actually a challenge that I can take part in! I'm so excited!!!
I'm in! so excited!!!

xoxo Kim
i am definitely in..very excited!
quick question though: I may be doing my calculations wrong but I'm trying to get half of my body weight (184lbs) in ounces and I am getting a number in the thousands (1421ish). I am certain that I do not have to drink that much water, right O_o haha
This is great! I'm in! I actually started transitioning 2 weeks ago and set a personal goal for July to see where and how I'm doing. So, this will be right up my alley! Thanks Kim! Wooo Wooo Wooo! 🙂
agh i'm totally pumped idk how i as a college student will find a way to eat healthy meals…….. but we shall see!
haha..oops figured it out!
thought about that TOO hard smh…no conversions needed, just divide by 2!
I am in!! I just BC'd 3 weeks ago and I am trying to find a routine that works for me and my natural hair. I think this challenge is a great place to start.
I'm up for the challenge..a challenge it will be because AS SOON as it gets warm outside I cut my hair off, but it is my ultimate desire to have long hair…
I'm up for the Challenge. I am recovering from a mild stroke, now on DB (no stress from work for a while) Also doctor put me on a diet. Ready for a new direction which include healthy long hair and body. I can't wait to see the new me in a couple of months (also include a new work out plan at the gym) LET'S WORK!
Definitely count me in!! This couldn't have come at a better time. I was just thinking to myself that February could be a starting point for working toward my personal destinations for 2011 (since I seem to have missed January lol!!). One of my top five is taking proper care of my hair. And now I get to do it amongst a lively group of gorgeous fellow naturals!!! How amazing is that!!
WooHoo! im in!!
Loving it! I'm in!
I love Kim Coles and what an awesome idea! I've done challenges over the years but I'm really excited for this one! Off to start my blog!
I accept the challege. I am soo glad that Kim Coles and other celebrity African American women have decided to go natural. It is soo inspirational for me to continue my natural hair journey and soo many of our children will be inspired. It saddens me that my daughter came to me just yesterday and said that her hair is ugly and asked me why our hair has to be soo nappy and I told her that our hair is beautiful, but it just doesn't get enough media attention, like other nationalities hair do, which gives you the mentality that it is unacceptable, but with big names, like Kim Coles and others, I am sure the more of our sisters that go naural, soo many others will follow, which will cause more of us to start having self-love for our hair, take better care of it and to retain a healthy head of long beautiful big curls.
I've been doing these things for a while, so I'm up for the challenge. I just put in a protective style (fluffy twists) because I've been lazy with my hair. Cheers to consistency for the next six months (and beyond)! Take lots of pics y'all.
Please do count me in. I accept this challenge.
Diving in head first 🙂
Just filled up my water bottle! I'm in!

I am accepting the challenge as well. I haven't had a relaxer since Nov 10. I am excited to see what my "real" hair looks like. I decided as of jan 2, 2011 that I would lose 30 lbs, eat right – I am walking in the Avon for Breast Cancer walk June 4th & 5th in Chicago in memory of my mom. I am just excited about my new future look, physical an inner. I'll definitely keep you ladies posted and will be trying out the information you suggest since i'm a new curly. 😉
I can't wait until Kim visits Newark on June 18t at the Newark Public Library!
I wish I'd heard about this earlier – my hair is a hot mess! 🙁
