CN: When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now?
K: I big chopped November 11, 2010. I’d initially planned to do a long-term transition. I asked my stylist to trim a little bit and shape up the back so that my transition style would have some definition. As I was getting ready to roll my hair one night, I decided that I was tired of maintaining the two textures. I got the scissors and snipped it until all of the relaxer was gone. I was amazed at my natural curl pattern and overwhelmed because the little length that I once had was gone. I was flooded with emotions. I felt free because this was my own hair, but at the same time I was overcome with the thought that everybody was going to hate it! After I figured out how my everyday style would look, I ditched the anxiety and became confident! I thought, “Who cares what everybody else thinks!” It was liberating!
CN: How did you cope with the responses from your family and friends?
K: I’ve had positive feedback from everyone who’s seen it! All of the anxiety I had initially was for no reason! I’ve been complimented by men and women both black and white! My mom has yet to see it, so her verdict is still unknown. My confidence has grown in just a short time.
CN: What are your plans for your hair?
K: My plan is definitely to grow my hair long. My 4 year old daughter is not and has never been relaxed. So I let her wear twist out styles, and I am anxious to get to that point myself. Shoulder length hair is my goal.
CN: Do you find it necessary to ‘doll up’ your look to feel more feminine? If so, what are your favorite accessories, or go to ways to glam up your look?
K: Yes, I simply love to be glamorous no matter what. It compliments my personality and who I am. My favorite accessories are earrings. I’m definitely into berets, and my makeup always has to be done!
CN: How do you keep it moisturized?
K: I co-wash once every other night. It’s easy to do with a TWA. I use leave-in conditioners, almond oil and unrefined shea butter.
CN: What products and techniques do you use to style? How often do you style?
K: I love to use Suave Conditioners, Giovanni Direct Leave-In, Kinky Curly products, almond oil, unrefined shea butter, a wide toothed comb, a pick and a brush. I style every single day. Again, it’s easy to do with a TWA. I can’t keep my hands out of my hair. I absolutely love it!
CN: How do you get your waves or curls popping?
K: What gets my curls popping is conditioner. A good conditioner always does the trick for me. I find myself conditioning my hair about once every day. I rinse, apply the leave-in conditioner and some almond oil for shine. Then, I let it dry!
CN: How do you preserve your curls at night?
K: Typically, I sleep in a satin bonnet. Every other night, since the big chop, I go to bed with conditioner in my hair. The next morning I rinse, moisturize, style and GO!
Oh my gosh! Thank you guys so, so much! This really means a lot to me!

So georgeous. I really believe that not everyone can pull off this look. I know I couldn't.
Congrats! 🙂
What an adorable face.
Beautiful face and hair. Thanks for sharing!
I'm really loving the TWA hair cut, it really suits the frame of your face along with those pretty glasses. I can see the curls already and as it grows out more they will be more in effect. Congrats on doing the chop :).
Your hair is absolutely beautiful! The style complements your face so wonderfully. You may find that by summertime, when your hair begins to get long, you will miss the ease and beauty of its current length!
Congratulations!!! Just wait… Your hair will grow super fast!!!
