Natural Beauty and Confidence
Lynn writes:

Some feel their natural beauty is able to stand alone, for others confidence doesn’t come so quickly, for the latter accessories are a lifesaver.

What accessories do you use to dress up your look?

Where do you find hair accessories?

Do you do it for yourself, or to make your natural hair more acceptable to others?

It is a struggle. I am transitioning and I am not happy with my new hairstyles every day so my best friends are bobby pins/hair pins, a scarf to smash down those unsightly edges. I also have sparkley earrings. I am still learning so I am always open to suggestions.

Since my chop I'm more into big earrings. I don't wear a lot of make-up, but my brows and lips are a must.
I don't have any hairaccessories. I own a lot of silk scarves so I tend to wear those instead of a headband.

Well I have been natural for a couple of years, but only wore weaves and such. But lately, due to extreme breakage from heat, I started to really take care of my hair this time. For accessories, I wear those knitted hats with a little of my curly fro out, and what is so amazing and new to me is broaches being worn on my hat and in my hair. One person mentioned that hair accessories are not classy but immature, but with broaches, they add a touch of sophistication and I swear I look so gorgeous. Broaches look better in hair than on clothes, trust me!!!! 🙂

When I was a young girl I loved watching my mother put on make-up, her jewelry and change her purse everyday to match her shoes. Well of course the apple didn't fall far from the tree, I love all things beautiful! I'm 42 and I wear headbands, sometimes a flower (but only on the weekend) and really cute rhinestone bobby pins to dress up my look. The key for me is this, if the earrings are center stage then the neck will be bare and the hair accessories will be very subtle, too many bold items at one time can make you look too stimulating on the eyes- folks might get dizzy!

U have a drawer FULL of jewelry. Earrings have always been my best friend because I had a short hairstyle (Regina King) since 2002. I typically buy it anywhere I can find it from the beauty store to the Mall and online so if its cute I'll buy it. The only person I do it for is myself I've always been the type to do what I felt was best for me bc @ the end of the day I (YOU) have to live with that decision!!! I don't expect everyone to like it but again to each their own.

I have never owned so many headbands! I love them mainly because I don't like hair in my face, I never did, but I don't want bangs either so I do headbands all of the time. Flowers, rinestone, pearls, studded, jeweled, I wear them all. I even have one that looks like I am wearing a small hat when I put it on. I love them. I like barretes but I have so much hair I can't find one that will stay in so I stopped buying them.

I'm a girly girl anyway so I've always love to accessorize. The only difference between now as rather than then is that I wear bigger earrings because my hair is shorter. The interesting thing is that I wear LESS make up than I did before. Becoming natural has made me become more comfortable in my own skin. It's a beautiful thing.

I've always been an accessorizer. Got it from my mama. I will get hair accessories from any and everywhere: girlprops.com, asos.com, local vendors, walmart…
I do it for myself because I know my husband doesn't care if I put any jewelry or hair stuff on. I have my days when I just go, no earrings, no scarves, nothing and I still feel fierce.

I love a nice pair of earrings, always have, the bigger the better, but I now love studs and dislike hoops, it used to be the opposite, but I notice curly hair makes me look younger and hoops make it even worse, almost juvenile [on me]

Also I wan never really into makeup but i notice that when my hair is straight I feel like I should have some on as opposed to natural styles my big hair kind of distracts from that, which is great b/c the less the better IMO, it does make me take more effort into keeping my skin clesr though.

Oh and of course I do it for myself cause when I know I'm lookin good I feel even better 🙂

I put on heavy mascara and big hoop ear rings along with high heels and a sexy, classy very cute dress. I am past what others think I do it for myself!

my favorite accessories are headbands and earrings. Even though I am in my fabulous funky fifties, I know what looks good on me and what doesn't and besides that, I'm confident in whatever I wear and yes, age does have its privileges, in that I really don't care what anybody says or their opinion of how I look. If I want to rock a pretty comb or barrette in my hair, I'll do it and you can believe that it will look stylish.

When I got my hair cut, I rushed to the store and bought new earrings and makeup. Working at the hotel, I usually only wore some type of studs. however, the new do bought a new me to the forefront. I can't wear big hoops at the hotel, but I wear the small ones. And I started to wear makeup. I was never into anything but foundation, sometimes gloss. But I make an attempt to do some eye makeup. I also have invested in more mini clips, pretty bobby pins, etc. I just feel prettier ever since I got my mini-big chop

I need to start wearing more accessories, they are so pretty! But presently, I do not wear hair accessories. I feel that I look pretty darn good without them but hey, adding some won't hurt me either LOL.

  • Bree says:

I was a fan of accessories in general so I love headbands, clips, earrings, etc. since usually I keep my hair/outfits in low key simple styles anyway. I don't think it has anything to do with confidence or age it just apart of my personal style so I do it for myself not others. I get my accessories everywhere from online places like esty, Sally‘s, clothing stores, fairs, etc. I try to go for well made quality accessories that I know I will love months/years from now that can change with me as my style/hair evolves than simple pieces I will wear probably once. Variety is the spice of life so your hair and style shouldn't be an exception

Hello, I've been natural for 3 weeks now on Feburary 11th it will be one month now, I did the Big Chop and I have a teeny weeny afro but its not to teeny and my hair grows fast but I'm stil not feeling confident about my hair just yet. I dont regret cutting the perm off because thats what I wanted to do, I just wish my self esteem was a little higher, also I don't wear makeup and jewery or anythiing but I would like to, i'm tomboish and I think going curly would help me feel a little more confident until it grows but I don't know what to do. Also how can I stop paying so much attention to it while it grows. I'm constantly watching it as it grows and i'm getting impatient,

Well groomed eyebrows a clear complexion and some fly earrings really "accessorize" my natural hair. I do like a flower or two in the summer months as well.

I don't think age has anything to do with it…if you buy accessories from the hair store then you probably won't look as stylish as you want to. As I've gotten older my style and taste has changed. I like more girly things than I did 2 years ago. It just so happens that I went natural. I've always loved earrings and jewerly. When I was relaxed I never accessorized my hair but now I love headbands. They help to add shape to my fro because I have a weird widows peak and they're reviving when when my twist out looks old.

  • Tasha says:

I'm 35 and I have to say that my curly hair makes me look younger and I kinda like it. I do love rocking make up and accessories. It has nothing to do with anyone else other than myself and it's not about a need to spice up my natural hair. I just happen to like it. I love playing with colors and glosses. I put makeup on when I feel like it and I go without it when I feel like it. And hell…I'm cute either way. 🙂

i agree with Unkindred Hart and Anon 12.24p

i was into earrings and headbands a lot when i was relaxed. i never could get into makeup though, but i don't think i'm missing anything. wearing a lot of accessories now seems to take away from my overall look. it's almost overwhelming to me. i use my hair as an accessory, with tame curls for a demure look and a phat fro for a more funky look. i still wear earrings and hairclips, but they play second fiddle to my hair. and i WISH i could get a headband around all this hair now, hahaha!

Also, I think after a certain age the cheap earrings and hair accessories can look immature if one is not careful.

  • Anonymous says:

I personally don't like many accessories and find them to be busy. I think simplicity is sophisticated. I see some naturals do all the big earrings, and hair sticks and headbands and flowers and that's just not for me. My partner also prefers simple looks.

I like to think that my hair is an accessory to my positive, loving attitude and outlook on life. Rather than sonething else being an accessory to my hair.

  • Camille Acey says:

I know it sounds a little funny to say but..hats! I had locs for ten years, which meant I could mostly only wear stretchy rasta tams. I've been enjoying being able to rock so many different types of hats now.

I was already an earring-ista when I had locs, but now that I "have" my neck again since my hair is no longer hanging, the earrings are more on display (and also don't get tangled in my hair!). So my earring zeal is now two-fold.

  • Unkindred Hart says:

My hair is my accessory. I was never into jewelry or makeup and going natural didn't change that.

  • Anonymous says:

I have to agree. I used to wear just diamond studs and gold hoops. My earring collection has grown significantly in the past six months. I love headbands also. Target has a great collection, and everytime I go, I make sure that I stop in the accessory section and see what is new. I also love Icing, which is ina almost every mall. They are a little bit expensive, but I will splurge for one that I really want. I have also fallen in love with my makeup all over again. I was never a huge makeup person, but I feel like it fits well to have some kind of makeup done. I do all of this for me because I like the way I look in it. There are days where I don't have any accessories on and will rock my big afro and still feel fly. All the accessories just add to my already booming confidence.

I have fallen in love with big earrings. When it comes to hair accessories I love, love berets especially slouchy ones I usually get them from this place called dots they have cute things for cheap. Now that I am natural, I find myself putting on jewelry and makeup for me because before I had very, very low self-esteem. I thought that I wasn't worth it but the through the transitioning process I kinda found the beauty with in and started not to care what people thought about me. The people who love and care about me know that I am a good person and I am beautiful and I am worth it so I started showing that.
