I was so proud of her, I learned about her from your interview CurlyNikki (as I did with Kwanzaa Jones too). After I read your interview I purchased some music of hers from iTunes. Your building a very powerful community! Esperanza is a truly a lovely lady and a gifted musician her award and recognition was long overdue.

    A well deserved win!

Love it. Wish people would stop posting on who they thought should win, and truly take a look at her credentials. Definitely think if the haters knew her as the musical artist she is then they would appreciate her art the way the judges did. Thank goodness the judges respect true talent on all levels and truly appreciate the pioneers that are going to take it to the next level.

Esperanza darling, if they didn't know you before, they sure do now!! lol

I really wish people would be a little more cultured and step out of the "radio box". I love jazz and I like finding out and hearing what's new on the music scene. Esperanza's grammy win was very much well deserved. She is not only beautiful but highly educated and extremely talented. Not that she needed it (she does have a small following), but this will definitely put her on the map! Congrats Esperanza!

Jada's hair looked nice and full, but her ends looked kinda scraggly and random. IMHO
Perhaps a little trim or a braidout/twist out with some attention to the ends (i.e flexirods, rollers) would have made the difference.

I thought Esperanza Spalding looked great! Via a google search, here is what Jada Pinkett had done to her hair which also looked great…

Jada Pinkett Smith's Grammy Hair Revealed February 14th, 2011 4:08pm EST Post a comment Add to My News Celebrity hairstylist Marcia Hamilton created Jada Pinkett Smith's look for the 2011 Grammy Awards.
To achieve this red carpet style, Marcia began by using White Sands Vegan Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. She then gently towel dried Jada's hair and then sprayed on The Fix from White Sands from roots to ends. Next, she sectioned the hair vertically from the center of the forehead to the nape. Each section was cornrowed straight back. Her hair was then allowed to dry thoroughly using the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Blow Dryer. When the hair was completely dry, Marcia applied IT&LY Pure Water Drops to her hands and gently undid the cornrows. When all the hair was loose, Marcia had Jada flip her head down and over for dramatic volume. To finish, she added additional Pure Water Drops to her hands and fingers, combing hair into place.

Well it was interesting that she won, considering that I really have never heard of her music before. Her dress wasn't feeling it to much, though the arms are truly amazing with the muscles. The hair could have been styled a little better, but overall her apperance looked nice. The Grammys Award show was a okay, to me the ones that did good were Lady Gaga, Enimem,Ceelo,Katy Perry.

@CN – There's a story on Esperanza on CNN.com today. Apparently folks are hot that she beat out Justin Beiber. (Hate it for 'em!)

She looked fantastic and has such a wonderful attitude and presence. I loved it when the President of the Academy was speaking about the Academy's support for music education and she was playing her double bass with that fierce fro. That almost brought tears to my eyes. A wonderfully gifted, wellspoken, beautiful, talented young woman with a BIG natural!! LOVES IT!!

Janelle Monae also looked wonderful and her perfomrance was electric!

I would love to see Esperanza and Alicia Keyes do something together. Or add Nora Jones and they could have a trio of something lovely!

    Other naturals noted:

Aretha Franklin photos from back in the day, during her honor at the beginning of the show.

Willow Smith- the braid action seen mostly on the pre-show red carpet interviews. She's a cutie pie.

Jaden Smith- during his performance with Justin Bieber. Cornrows look cute on him

Jada Pinkett Smith- I think she was rocking her natural in the audience

  • Cinthia says:

Congratulations Esperanza!! You were beautifully poised and well spoken. Continue to write/produce music that inspires you and in turn, inspires others. Conformity takes a back seat. And the hair…FAB!

Strong 2nd! to what Joslyn said!

I saw her only once opening for Prince but have loved her and that fabulous hair! So glad there's still a forum to validate great music versus great PR, auto tune, sound affects, Sprite commercials, BS attitude, Cristal baths, 'random' club paparazzi pics etc., etc., etc.

You go girl! Get you that recognition. Nobel Prize, Obama, Prince, now a grammy!

  • Joslyn says:

YAY!!! Isn't it great to know that the Grammy's still validate and appreciate TALENT?? Esperanza Spalding is a master at what she does. Like the other comments said, the Bieber fans and Drake fans can wait for the bubble gum MTV music awards LOL

I totally agree with I Am Your People. I am a true fan of Miss Spalding. Her music is amazing. She is a talented, intelligent, beautiful fierce woman holding her own in the jazz world. Her accomplishments thus far has been amazing. Congrats to her with the Best New Artist Award. Talent won this year, it was not a popularity contest.
