I Big Chopped- Cassie
CN: When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now?
C: This is my second chop. I transitioned for almost a year and chopped for the first time, at full SL, in November 2010. I had some heat damage, and I wasn’t pleased. Also, I felt that hair held on to a lot of energy, and 2010 was a rough year. So, I decided to chop it all off. I chopped for the 2nd time in February 2011. It was so scary because I had never been bald in my life. I was worried about being bald and single. “How am I going to find a boyfriend now,” I thought. After the chop, I felt surprisingly free. I felt feminine and super cute. I now feel pangs of anxiety. However, I remind myself of what this BC means, and then I feel better.

CN: How did you cope with the responses from your family and friends?
C: My mom cut my hair, and she still isn’t pleased. She loves long hair and thinks long hair looks better on me. My brother hates it. He liked my hair relaxed, and my friends are indifferent. However, I have received lots of support from the online community, and that helps to soften the brunt of my family’s reaction.

CN: What are your plans for your hair?
C: I’m not sure what I want to do with it yet. Some days I want to be able to pull it back into a bun, and other days, I love the way my TWA looks. Time will tell.

CN: Do you find it necessary to ‘doll up’ your look to feel more feminine?
C: I don’t feel the need to get “dolled up.” I do feel the need to have a polished look. I have never been a fan of huge accessories. So, I will not be wearing huge hoop earrings. I do like to make sure my brows are done, and I’m wearing a lip color with cute earrings. I must admit wearing dresses makes me feel super feminine.

CN: If so, what are your favorite accessories, or go to ways to glam up your look?
C: As I said, cute earrings, lip gloss and fierce brows are the ways I glam up my look.

CN: How do you keep it moisturized?
C: I make my own hair spritz which consists of AVJ, water, EVOO and my favorite leave-in conditioner. I spritz my hair 3 times a day.

CN: What products and techniques do you use to style? How often do you style?
C: I typically use ECO-Styler to keep the frizz at bay, and I style everyday because it’s a TWA. I can’t really maintain the look overnight because it gets flat.

CN: How do you preserve your curls at night?
C: I use a TWA. There is really little to no curl preservation. I usually sleep in a satin bonnet to protect my hair at night.

From one Cassie to another 😉 My experience was similiar and now after a year later my twa is still a twa, due to shrinkage… but I'm still having fun on my healthy hair adventure.
Stay positive and be around positive people. As far as your fam… They'll keep asking you questions (Like when is this going to pass?), but they'll be iight and you will, too! In fact, they may actually begin to live vicariously through you (even if they don't admit it)! 😉

I have to say I am glad I was surrounded by supportive people but I can tell you now that we are here for you! And I only had 1 to 2 inches when I did my BC then barber fade 5 months ago. Now my hair is long enough to play with but looks hella short if I let it just shrink after a wash and go. Embrace every moment of your TWA. your hair is going to take off now! Be confident and know that you are a beautiful black woman with a full head of healthy hair!
