Great advice, I always wait until last minute, I'm hopeless that way and either pull off a creative miracle or frantically find a stylist. I saw they quoted Diane DaCosta in the article. I had a hideous natural experience with her maybe 2 years ago and still can't quite believe that the woman who mercilessly burnt my scalp countless times with a Marcel in 1 visit, among numerous other things, is still in business. For important events I typically try to co-wash and braidout 2 days before the event. I pineapple my hair the night before. It gives my hair a few days to stretch out and still look defined. I then have the flexibility of wearing it down or pulling it up, and still having good shine and some definition with the benefit of showing more length.
