CN: Are you a long-term or short-term transitioner, and why?
S: I’ve transitioned over 10 months now. So, I guess that would make me a long-term transitioner. I wanted to transition for this long because I’ve never had short hair, and I didn’t think I would look right with short hair. However, it has run through my mind a couple of times to cut it. I will probably transition until the one year mark which will be March 2, 2011.
CN: How did family and friends react to your decision? What was your response to them?
S: Well, my mom doesn’t agree with it. She just wonders why I did it because she thinks I had long beautiful hair. I’ve told her that I want to set a good example for my daughter to love herself just the way she is. My brother has locs so he is all for it, and my dad doesn’t care what my hair looks like. My friends are very supportive.
CN: What is your transition routine?
S: I shampoo my hair once a week with Cream of Nature (green label) diluted with Aloe Vera Juice. Then I DC with ORS Replenishing Conditioner or a moisturizing conditioner (haven’t found a staple yet). I moisturize daily with shea butter and seal with an oil I have readily available.
CN: What is your staple hair style during the transition?
S: I wear buns during the week and braid-outs on the weekends.
CN: How do you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?
S: At first, I was using S-Curl which was working well with my hair. Then, I started to make my own spritz with Aloe Vera Juice and JBCO, but I think I’m going to go back to S-Curl.
CN: Why did you choose to go natural?
S: I thought about going natural for the past two years but didn’t have the knowledge to take care of it properly. I made the decision officially because I told my friend if she went natural I would do it with her, but she decided not to do it. I decided to stick with it because the chemicals I was putting in my hair were not healthy. After doing some research, I started to notice that natural hair was really beautiful. I also wanted to set a good example for my daughter.
