CN: When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now?
B: I big chopped on March 9, 2011 after 5 months of transitioning. To me, it wasn’t really a big deal because I was transitioning from a short haircut. So chopping and having short hair didn’t faze me a bit! I was, and still am very happy with my decision. As a college student, I think this was not only the best choice for my hair but my pockets as well. My Big Chop was just getting back to me! I no longer care what people think, say, or do. I’m just doing me!
CN: How did you cope with the responses from your family and friends?
B: My friends and family are very supportive. Anybody that knows me, knows my hair is constantly changing. My mom is transitioning right now as well. So her support and teamwork was greatly appreciated!
CN: What are your plans for your hair?
B: I plan to just grow it out and let it be as healthy as humanly possible! I have worn my hair in so many different styles its ridiculous. I have been fried, dyed, and laid to the side. A huge fro would be amazing!
CN: Do you find it necessary to “doll up” your look to feel more feminine?
B: I have always been very girly. As far as “dolling up” my look, I did that before the chop!
CN: How do you keep it moisturized?
B: My hair and scalp are very dry! Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) has become the love of my life! Also, I try to deep condition at least once a week. I absolutely love your Honey and EVOO recipe for deep conditioning.
CN: What products and techniques do you use to style? How often do you style?
B: Right now I’m using EVOO and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. I only shampoo once a month or when I feel my scalp really needs to be cleansed and co-washing just won’t do! I just purchased the Giovanni Direct Leave-in, and I love it! I use Shea Moisture products when I do my knots or twist-outs. When styling, I love to use three strand twist-outs and Bantu knot-outs. I find my hair does not shrink as much when I do theses styles after wash days. I try to make these styles last at least three days because I have learned that the less manipulation that is used, the more the growth.
CN: How do you preserve your curls at night?
B: I rub a dab of Giovanni Direct Leave-In or VO5 Moisture Milk Conditioner but just a little because I don’t dilute mine. I spritz some EVOO I have in a spray bottle. Then, I put my satin bonnet on and go!
Thank you guys so much for the love and support!-Brookey
