So I’ve heard many a nasty rumor and generalization about the ‘spoiled little LA girls‘ that Kanye affectionately refers to. I’ve also heard that weaves rule the day and that you’d be hard pressed to find a natural hair beauty walking the streets of Hollywood. Well Saturday night, I think we blew those stereotypes out of the water.
For the last 6 months, thousands of bloggers shared tips, learned together and of course, made new friends while writing about their experiences growing healthy natural hair. On Saturday, August 13th, Kim Coles, Jessicurl and I hosted the Grow Out Challenge (GOC) Wrap Up Party in Los Angeles to celebrate the end of the journey. I can’t even begin to describe the spirit in the room. Hundreds of gorgeous women (and men!) came out to celebrate the awesomeness that is our hair. The food was decadent, drinks delish, and venue. OMG. The venue. I wouldn’t have expected anything less LA. Thank you.
I've been transitioning for six months… I have an obsession with natural hair!!! I walk up to natural divas and compliment them. I plan to transition for atleast 12+months… I love the fact that more woman are starting embrace their natural hair rather than be ashamed of it….. I have NO curl/wave patern and I STILL LOVE MY KINKS!!!! π I love how being relaxer is the outsider. I pray that parents start teaching their kids to love and admire their hair- the one they were born with. I'm looking toward to this natural hair relaxer free movement…. Please continue spreading the knowledge!!!!
Hello Curly Nikki,
When are you coming to Phoenix, AZ? There are many naturals in AZ that would love to meet you.
@Anon 11:18 PM Yes, DMV natural ladies meet up often. Check out meetup.com as well as the Curly Meetups section on curlynikkiforums.com. I have been to four events in the last four weeks. We are planning to get together again next Saturday.
Does anyone know of any DMV(D.C, Maryland, Virginia) hair meet ups? Missed the last one in February:(
I had a ball! Of course I suffered from hair envy big time! There were so many ladies with BEAUTIFUL hair! I'm transitioning and I have several months to go! But, I'll get there slow and steady!
hey Nik quick ques how did you style your hair because it looks different?
the location was ok. i left with lots of goodies. i didnt like the location either. and yes the drinks were a little high. Also i am in a wheelchair and i couldn't even enjoy everything because of the stairs. some of the guys got my chair to the one floor. and my chair could barely get on the balcony because of narrow doorway. i actually ended up leaving early. alot to go thru for 25 dollars and really didnt enjoy myself too much. i think next time try to think of a location that is handicap accessible. You never know who may be trying to attend.
Nik,
It seems like everyone had a nice time. Congratulations for all of the hard work you ladies put into this!!! Boogie is as cute as she can be!!! π
I have to laugh at the first sentence b/c who gives credence to a man who refers to grown women as "little girls"? I'm glad to have met Nikki, her precious little one, and many many other LA(and San Diego and I.E.)Curlies.
Also, congrats to Jess (Jessicurl) and Michelle and Gretchen (Naturally Curly)as well for hostessing this event.
Gorgeous pics Nikki!
meant to say "poorly managed aprtment complex"
Nice event and great turn out, but I was very surprised at the physical location of the event- a rather unsavory neighborhood. The actual event seemed to be held at the top of a poorly apartment complex. For 25-30 dollar tickets, I didn't understand this. In addition, drinks seemed to be way overpriced (comparable to the price of drinks at a very upscale bar) for what was being served and how it was served ( a guy behind what appeared to be an apartment kitchen counter).
Although, I was not happy about all of the above, it was nice to see so many curlies out and about.
