It's Gotta Be the Castor Oil- A Giveaway! (CLOSED)
After trying yet another oil that I’ve fallen helplessly in love with, I’ve come to the conclusion that it must be the CASTOR OIL! It’s in every single pre-mix I adore. I’m a sucker for the dreamy serum like consistency… it softens, protects, controls frizz, has a touch of natural hold, and makes my hair feel like silk.

I was gifted a bottle of Castor and Moringa Softening Serum by Qhemet for review months and months ago. I packed, gave away a lot of products (hey Shalonda and Tia girl!), moved 600 miles away, unpacked (somewhat), lost a ton of stuff in transit, and most certainly forgot about this oil. The other day I went into the study to straighten up and saw it sitting out on hubby’s desk. I asked how he liked it, assuming like with my other stuff, he had already tried it. Apparently he thought it was his glasses cleaner (he obviously needs those glasses!) and grabbed it by mistake. Long story short, I used it on my twists and the rest is history. The man likes it too. I love the fragrance, the consistency, and how soft it leaves my fingers after application. The only thing I don’t quite get is the spray pump as a method of delivery. I also wish it came in a larger size.

I jumped online today to research Moringa oil. This is what I do every single time I like a product… I read up on the ingredients to see what ‘benefits’ I’m getting. Anyway, I stopped after hitting the second website and concluded that while I’m sure Moringa is bomb, IT’S GOTTA BE THE CASTOR OIL!

Later Gators,
Nik

About Qhemet’s Castor and Moringa Serum:

  • Ingredients: Contains 100% pure Castor and Moringa Oils. Moringa Oil is a highly valued emollient used in African and Indian hair and skin care traditions for over 2000 years. Moringa seed oil is rich in fatty acids, vitamins A and C and copper and calcium, important nutrients for the skin and scalp. It is also an excellent pre-wash hair conditioner as it naturally possesses cleansing and nourishing proprieties. African Castor Oil has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 4000 B.C. The castor bean plant is native to the Ethiopian region of tropical East Africa. This thick, shiny oil acts as a barrier agent and protective medium against harsh conditions and extremes. It is a natural humectant and possesses hair conditioning, thickening and softening properties. Protects ends and moisturizes dry, brittle and coarse hair.
  • Does not contain mineral oil, lanolin, proteins, silicones, artificial fragrances, dyes or parabens.
  • Has a natural, light citrus scent.
  • 100% Vegan, 100% Natural!

Directions: Use as a:

  • Softening and shine enhancing leave in: Spray a small to moderate amount all over damp hair to restore softness, shine and flexibility.
  • Hot oil treatment: Heat bottle until warm and coat entire scalp and hair. Cover hair with plastic and wrap with a towel. Leave in for 15 minutes to an hour. Rinse with warm water. Use this treatment twice a month or when your hair needs deep conditioning.
  • Oil Rinse: Use as a hair wash. Moringa Oil has natural cleansing properties so it can effectively clean hair on its own. Completely coat hair, massage through and rinse with warm water.
  • Post shampoo treatment: Use after shampooing. Completely coat hair, thoroughly massage in and rinse with warm water.
  • Conditioner booster: Add to your favorite shampoo or conditioner for added emollience, slip and moisture.
  • Replenishing all-over body moisturizer.

Anybody else REALLY feeling castor oil these days?

    Hey Nikki!

The one thing I like about my body is it's versatility.I have been skinny in my youth, curvaceous as a young lady and now as a mom of four, my body is considered "full-figured". My body is an ever-changing reflection of my life!

    Thank you!

  • Jo Somebody says:

I love my face because it's pretty much my mum's face. While it makes me sad sometimes, and especially did after her death, I love it now because I am reminded of her when I look in the mirror, and despite the sadness I am reminded of the strength she had and the belief she had in me. It makes getting up easier on those days that I don't wanna! I'm my mother's daughter, it is not in my heritage to give up on life.

I love reading through these comments because it sounds like some people have similar bodies to mine, but they put such a positive spin on things I've always frowned upon! Great question! Thank you!

    Hello Curly Nikki..

I love my personal space, I know that this is not a physical part of my body but it is something that I respect and love as if it were a physical appendage. I have had natural hair since I was about 10 (20y.o. now) and have been wearing traditionally natural hair styles in a mostly white community has been quite "interesting". Most of my encounters with other races not of african decent has been riddled with questions such as "why don't u wash you hair?", or my "Fav" "Can I touch it?" (sometimes they don't even ask) I have always felt obligated to compromise my personal space in order for them to examine me like some freak show (remember this is me at 10). So i came across a blog today about a caucasian mother and her African American daughter and how the mother felt about others touching her hair. It definitely opened my eyes a bit when she said that people should respect her daughters personal space and just because she is small does not mean that her personal space is any less valuable. Reflecting back I truly wish that I had such advocacy, because something like violation of personal space could lead to low self-esteem. I hope I didn't take this too deep but its something that is important to me.

    Thanks for listening!!!

The one thing that I love about my body is my smile. This is my favorite because throughout my life I've been known for having a great beautiful smile. I like how I can walk up to someone who wasn't in the best mood and just smile at them and instantly change the look on their face. I also love my smile because no matter how much weight I've gained or loss, that smile of mine is one thing that doesn't fluctuate. A smile can be very powerful and soften the hardest of hearts and pull you out of very dark places, My smile is beautiful, unique and God-given. Nobody has my smile and that makes me very happy. : )

Honestly, this is difficult for me as I have battled with self esteem issues since I was a little girl. However, since I went natural a little over a year ago I have learned to love me and I love my smile. I get compliments on it but it wasn't until I had to seriously look into the mirror (to do my own hair) that I realized I have a warm smile that I pray encourages and brightens the lives of others and reflects the joy I have in Jesus.

It harboured and sheltered my four beautiful children eighteen, sixteen, fifteen, and ten years ago and each time, back then, went right back to where it began. Many days now, however, I think it's turned against me. Today–I love it. (Kimba)

(I was quite sure my squats weren't going to bring the boys to the yard…) But, I get an amazing sense of what is possible and what I can accomplish, all because of the things my body can do and has done, just because I've asked it to and believed that it could.

One thing that i love about my body is my hips. I love how curvy and smooth they are. I think all women should love there body no matter what because that is how God created you, and you should never apologize for the way you look. We are all beautiful inside and out.

I love my arms. It has to be genetics, but they're always toned with no flapping wings.

  • Bevy says:

Even though I'm "knock-kneed", I love my my legs. They are long, lean and toned.

  • Kara Simpson says:

I love my feet. They have gotten me through many years of dance and cheerleading despite being extremely flat. They have worn pointe shoes, jazz shoes, sneakers, high heels, and are still going strong. They have endured criticism about how they were not "right" for ballet and are marked by hours spent practicing. They have taken me places I have never imagined and continue to lead me down the path of life. 🙂

Hmm…I've got to admit, I've had a love hate relationship with my body since I was probably 12 or so. I've always been on the heavy side no matter how much I change my eating habits or work out. But I can definitely say I love my skin. It tends to stay soft and doesn't really blemish. I especially love my skin in the summer because I get a good few shades darker (I get so pale during the winter months).

I feel fit, I feel strong, I feel healthy, I feel beautiful, and looking at it in the morning makes me so grateful that not only can I walk and move but that I can do so while looking great! I promise i'm not conceited, heheh

I love my mouth (lips & teeth). I have a really pretty smile! I had been teased a lot about having big lips and teeth.

We were too poor for braces and I am Nigerian, so big lips come with the territory. A school photographer took a candid picture of me laughing in the cafeteria. It looked so pretty. So after years of trying NOT to smile, I started smiling as BIG as I could. My pictures actually looked better and more natural. It was like Celie on Color Purple when Suge Avery convinced her to smile.

I haven't stopped showing ALL of my teeth since. So if you walk by a girl smiling like she is crazy–holla at your girl (LOL)!

Quite honestly, when I first read the question, I thought to myself, "omg, out of all of the questions in the world to ask, why did it have to be this one". Lol. I must admit that I have been struggling with getting in better shape and cutting out all of the bad things that I currently eat. So, my current state is not where I want to be a couple of months down the road. With that being said, I absolutely love my legs. My husband compliments me all the time on how nice they are. With all of the things that I feel I need to work on, both internally as well as externally, it's nice to hear things like that from the one who's opinion matters the most (outside of your own). P.S. Hi all not to be difficult or to be sentimental the one thing I love about my body is that it's "mines". It gives me the capability to adapt, to exhale, to learn how to love, be loved & etc. For years I have always been the flamingo of everyone because I was too tall, I had full lips, I wasn't a size zero or I spoke too proper to be a woman of color. What do I love best about my body? Well I think there are two things that stand out that are apart of a bigger concept. Always loved my big almond shaped eyes and smile. Get the most compliments on other "assets" (he he) but I can appreciate compliments on a smile because a smile is infectious and can brighten up the most sour day and eyes are the gateway to the soul. hello im Nazirah Muhammad and this may sound funny but, one thing i love about myself is my forehead..YES! it may be large but it makes me stand out lol i would say it makes me look different and exotic and i like that…over the years i have learned to embrace it and it was a hard thing to do..but i did it! i had to stop caring about what others thought and think.."God made me like this so it must be beautiful!!" Ever since Ive embraced my forehead i have learned to appreciate myself a lot more and accept my own and be myself! <3

Hello I'm Jada, and I know this may sound crazy, but I love my stretch marks. I wasn't thrilled after I had my first child and was left with scars all over my body. But, a very special person in my life changed my views on them. Those marks represent life!

I myself love my shoulders. They are a regal asset that I love to show off. Thinking of how much I love my shoulders helps me remember to walk up straighter. I wonder if I could use this serum on my shoulders?

  • Missy says:

I have to say I love my legs. Having put on some weight over the years, I am a little self conscious about my body. But let me tell you, when I show some leg I get compliments all around 🙂 Too bad the cold weather is rolling in 😉

Hello Curly Nikki…the one thing I love about my body would be my feet. I chose my feet because growing up I thought I had the longest toes and did not like them. However, after being told on more than one occassion that my feet were pretty and that nothing was wrong with my toes, I looked at them in a different way, embraced them and learned to love them along with the rest of me. Now I keep them done and wear them out in sandals proudly when it's hot out.

I definitely love my freckles, they run across my cheeks and nose. I would like to win the castor oil for my 12 year old daughter who loves her curls and is learning to work with them. I may sneek and use her oil too but I'm kind of stuck on Argan oil and olive oil for myself! kyanner1@gmail.com

I love that I was born with moles all over my body, some are visible to the world, like on my lower lip (that folks say means good luck!) right next to the bridge of my nose, the one on my cheek bone, the one on my chin that looks like a painted on beauty spot 🙂 and then there are the others that only my Doctor and lover (ok, my Mother and sisters too) know are there…. makes me unique!!

  • Laleepop14 says:

I don't really dislike my body, but if I had to choose it's best feature I would say my lips or my face. I LOVE the way I look, and not to sound conceited but my love for myself (and thats deeper than just what I look like on the outside) has gotten even deeper since I went natural over 2 years ago because I notice a lot of my own features that make me pretty.. AND THATS THE PG-13 VERSION of what I love MOST about my body….hahahaha…I have used Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil and I must say I love that stuff.

Re-started using castor oil in my products: shampoo, conditioner, shea butter mix and leave-in conditioner. Might be having a castor oil overdose but am enjoying the benefits. Softer hair and easier to manage. Definitely the castor oil!

castor oil is the shish lol! i use it in all my mixes and dc's. castor oil has a mild humectant property to it which is why i think it keeps hair moisturized so well. my shea mix is like a whole new product with it. i liked it before but i LOVE it now with the castor oil in it. my hair actually feels and looks moist and hydrated, not just lubricated. and i mean for DAYS! i can wear a twist/braid out for days without reapplying anything to it and it will still feel soft.

  • Ashley Jane says:

I love castor oil especially in the winter months when I load my hair up with it and keep my twists in all week. I don't add any extra moisture or oil to my hair the entire week, just wrap it up before bed, and when I take my hair down for wash day it's STILL moisturized. The combo of that oil and protective styles have resulted in MAJOR length retention and healthy near split-less ends with minimal trimming!

  • Anonymous says:

Castor oil is a staple when doing my hair. I never twist or wear my puff without it. I order the large bottle from Iherb because the little bottle at the drug store don't last me that long.

And I am STILL using the STASH of products you gave me. So glad I could help you "clean out"
    your stash. LOL!!

Totally agree with you Nikki, I love castor oil and I also really like the Qhemet oil!

  • Anonymous says:

Castor oil is one of my fave oils! I love the softness after using it and it really curbs the frizz. It really locks in the moisture for ages too.

  • Anonymous says:

I'm new to castor oil just this week and wish I tried it much sooner IT'S GREAT! I got a scent free brand from Amazon and it's fabulous. I'm having breakage so trying castor oil for it's hair growing properties. Love how nice and thick it is. Did my twists tonight and my twist have never looked this good and defined!

  • hairscapades says:

LOL @ Rece. Well … you know. That's mah baaaabyyyy!! We ride or die!! LOL!! (I sooo try to be hip … when I'm sooooo not. LOL!)

It took me a few applications before I liked castor oil. I also had the Jamaican Black Castor Oil. At first it feels heavy on my hands, but my hair absorbs it nicely and it keeps my ends moisturized. Oddly enough, although it feels heavy on my hands, it doesn't on my hair.

I knew Shelli (Hairscapades) would chime in on this post. She was actually the one who unintentionally encouraged me to try it. She swears by JBCO! LOL

  • thenaturalmo says:

i just recently started using just plain ole castor oil and I love it. I had been trying to find JBCO on the ground and had no luck so I just ordered the plain stuff from vitacost. I have been using for about a week around my edges. I have seen on the forums how the ladies had experienced growth so i am hoping it fills in the thin spots

  • Anonymous says:

I love the spray delivery method. Its a neater application, you can spray the oil into your hands or spray directly on the hair. I just bought Shea Moistures reconstructive elixir spray oil and I LOVE it. It made my braid-out turn out amazing. Like the best ever and I'm a new curly. It does contain castor oil. I am definitely looking at keeping spray oils in my stash. Thanks for the review on this spray oil.
Oil made my hair grow to the middle of my back when I was straight so I'm trying to figure out how to use them as a curly. Spray oils help keep my curl definition more than a heavier butter. Especially with wash & go's any type of rubbing on my hair and my curls are gone.

  • hairscapades says:

JBCO is my sweetie! Love it. It's thinner than traditional castor oil and it makes my ends soooo soft. I have fine hair and tried shea butter to seal when I first learned of the principles of moisturizing and sealing, it was just too heavy and seemed to just sit on my hair. JBCO seems to absorb so that it does not create a tacky/sticky, greasy or "chalky" surface. It just leaves my ends ends soft and sheeny. LOVE it! It is definitely one of my Holy Grail products!!

lol @ Jax and loving castor oil like Paula Dean loves butter. nice. Me and you both!

  • CURLYNIKKI says:

I have yet to try the Jamaican Black Castor Oil. How does it compare to the cold pressed cheap stuff I buy at Walmart?

  • Jin says:

YES girl, I'm addicted to Jamaican Castor Oil….I apply it to wet hair after co-washing and it makes my hair feel/look so good.

  • Jax says:

I bought some Moringa softening serum a month ago and fully concur with your review. I LOVE castor oil like Paula Deen loves butter! The smell of the Moringa is pleasant and it really helps calm my frizz. A bigger bottle is necessary.

  • Anonymous says:

Castor oil is GREAT for twist outs, wash n going etc….it's the best $3.00 i ever spent. I get the regular bottle (in the laxative aisle) of walmart and it serves my hair up just fine. It's really not need for any other oil in my stash.

Castor oil is the BEST oil for my hair…without it my hair is soooo very dry! People be sleepin on it but it is the only thing that really keeps my hair moisterized, especially when I had a TWA

i discovered the wonderment that is castor oil last winter. i used it to seal under my KCCC for wash and goes and man, i'm telling you, pretty frizz free ringlets for days! i tried it out after reading about it promoting growth and a looser curly mentioning how she used it as a hair serum.

also, Nisus did a review on her product combo that gave her terrific curls and it included, what do you know, castor oil! http://www.itsjusthair.com/2011/02/product-ive-been-keeping-secret.html

I've had a bottle sitting under my sink (uh, stash of hair oils) and recently tried in my shea butter mixture and flaxseed gel, so far I really like it.

  • Tiffany says:

I love it to. Makes my hair soft and doesn't it promote growth?

  • Libby says:

YES! I had recently read a post about 5 best oils on Savvy Brown's blog and I started thinking again about castor oil. I just gave it a try starting last year and really enjoyed it. Previously, I never thought about castor oil on the hair; all I could remember was how people used it for its laxative properties so when I smell it, it brings back bad memories. lol

However, I was thinking of how I'd love to add a little something (like an essential oil) to help with fragrance as well as the other beneficial properties. Castor oil makes my twists hold, have more shine, and feel terrific. Definitely a keeper!

  • keisha says:

Yep! I LOVE castor oil by itself and also Oyin burnt sugar pomade! Just melts in your hair like butter!
