Sometimes wash day can be about as fun as watching paint dry… unfortunately, it takes about that long too. In my interview with Corinne Bailey Rae, she shared that to help her get through those 45 minute detangling sessions, she often sits in her garden. Fancy, huh? But since I’m usually buck ass naked during the styling process, afraid of bugs and oh, lack a garden, I came up with a list of my own. So the next time your henna’ing, deep conditioning, detangling, or putting in them mini-twists, try one of these on for size–
- Finally check out that new CD I haven’t had the chance to listen to for real, for real– (got that new Wale and Drake… and I just… I can’t… with Drake’s rendition of ‘Back that thang up’… )
- Blast Beyonce and sing along loudly and poorly (9 out of 10 times, this is what I do… while chasing behind Boogie)
- Audio book it
- Study notes/flash cards
- Listen to old Paul Mooney stand-up shows
- Catch up with an old friend (I call people ’cause of the nudity, but Syl invites herself over to folk’s houses)
- ^^^ You could also throw hair parties… invite folks over, do hair and have cocktails!
- Affirmations- “I’m awesome, “my hair rocks”, “this twist-out will be the best one yet”
- Stare at something for a little while , shut your eyes and study the after image
- Watch TV (Loving Breaking Bad on Netflix)
- Shoot a youtube video (I can’t, because of the birthday suit and all)
What do you do to pass the time?
The curly with the most creative answer takes home a jar of Qhemet Biologics Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee!
church sermons 🙂
When doing my hair, I usually take the time to think about my week and talk to God about the future. If I have already done that for the week, then it's Netflix to the rescue.
Pray! I use a portion of my hair time to talk to God and strengthen our relationship. I make sure to keep a consistent dialogue going with Him…to not just call Him when things are going wrong, but praise Him for everything that's right. Hallelujah!
~CurlyBlasian
I always style my hair on Wednesday nights aka WayBack Playbacks on Z103.5 Four hours of nonstop eurotrance music, while I dance around the house with wet hair, all the lights on and the radio turned all the way up.
Once I'm finished with my hair (the Braid n' Curl is my style of choice) I put on a satin scarf, my favorite dress (a white peasant dress) and dance until 1am.
This came right on time because as I type I'm under my hair dryer (with the deep conditioner in), on my iPad….reading CurlyNikki of course! Monica S.
I do affirmations too! And I sing, dance around and exercise. I use it as my me time.
Girl, you need to get on that Take Care. I'm not too feeling The Practice either or Under Ground King, but everything else….YES! Look What You've Done, Take Care, Over My Dead Body, Doing It Wrong are some of my favourites, but everything else is the business.
Shoots, I got distracted. Yeah, I "watch tv" which is really me staring in the mirror and sighing every two seconds, because I'm over this and I haven't heard a thing they said on the tube. Nothing works for me because I need to concentrate like a mug to get business handled :/
Figure out words with the letters "I,I,V,X,G,N,Q" on Words with Friends =D
My henna time is perfect for trying new things, lately I have been teaching myself how to play Mahjong
I watch eastenders while i define my hair and put the gel in – it is a british soap opera, and i don't usually watch soap operas, but this moves very fast and it is terrific. It also keeps me nice and still so that my hair dries properly and looks great!
I plan all the outfits I am going to wear for the week. Complete with accesories and alternates so I have options. My wardrobe is limited so I have to re-invent my clothes by changing up my accesories and hair styles. LOL Hopefully this will all change after Black Friday
I know this may sound strange but on wash days I do my self breast exams. I do them weekly because I'm breast cancer runs in the family and I'm paranoid like that. Since I like my DC to sit, I take my time and do thorough breast exams. Wash days gives me time to thoroughly check them without being rushed. Works for me..
While dc-ing I usually take the time to reconnect with friends and family I have not spoken with in a minute either on the phone or via e mail.
Me & my S/O wash our hair on the same day. I unbraids his first since he does less intricate styles than me. Then he helps me unbraid and/or untwist mine. Then I proceed to wash his hair first because it goes pretty quickly. Then I was my own hair.. it usually takes longer because I wash mine in section and the S/O thinks it a fine time to begin being being a pain in the butt and playing around in anyway at the end of the washing process the bathroom is usually down wet.. but I must admit it is fun:).. Then we go by my bestie to style my hair and I do his.. since he doesn't really do anything to intricate in his hair. We usually are watching a movie or listening to some music.
I LOVE Breaking Bad. Great show!! And the same as one of your subbies I watch whoissugar, naptural85, as well as many others. But I make sure I'm comfy so I don't put too much time in stressing over the process. Thanks Nikki for your platform!! I've learn so much.
During regular co-washing days my son brings his small pot in the shower and plays with his pot, wash cloth, and the water. Henna days my husband usually helps in various ways; I usually have forgotten something or helping with the clean up process, rinsing or just keeping me company and talking or listening to me and my random thoughts.
While doing my hair I love watching Awkward Black Girl episodes. I can watch them over and over. Always can get a good laugh.
Funny that you mention watching "Paul Mooney" videos. Paul was my former Father-in-Law and I still watch some of his old videos while doing yoga or my hair. I do individual braids (no extensions) on my natural hair sometimes and it takes about five hours to get them in. To past time,I watch 2-3 movies streaming on Amazon OR I do it starting on Friday night and this way, I do only half, wrap it and finish the rest the next day.I also listen to audio legal lectures. I really like protective hairstyles, BUT have started to ask myself is it worth the time I spend. Instead, now that I have length, I am finding that pulling it up on top of my head and tucking it under or two tucked ponytails is good protection. My hair is soft and hates cornrows. Twists do not stay in my hair. Essentially, I think I am sayin' that the least amount of time a protective hair takes, the better.
BTW, I am preparing for the February 2012 California Bar. I will be off work two months starting December 27. Any suggestions on what to do with my hair those two months that does NOT require me to sit more than one hour to implement or maintain?
During the first half of my detangling session I usually annoy my older 'relaxed' sister with "Hey! remember that time you stuck your hand in my hair & it got stuck?!?!? Try it again now!" The second half (& after I've been banished from her sight) I do squats. The fam calls it: "What's the point in the hair looking right if the booty ain't tight?"-time
I kick major Word Feud bootay!! Oh, and I blog…and Facebook…and Tweet…I'm a hopeless social media addict 🙂

I forgot to but my name after my comment "Well for me, I'm teaching myself to learn Spanish. So, I'll turn on a movie and play it in Spanish. so, if I'm doing a henna gloss treatment. I'll play the movie in Spanish while writing in my notebook what I think they're saying in English. I usually do this with a movie I haven't seen in order to challenge myself." Tinisha

Turn on the record player on: Otis Redding, Prince, and Dobie Gray LP and just relax. There is just something about the record player that is good for the soul. It is so different from listening to the radio. Something about that old record sound!
Like you CN… I am in the buff… When I DC, I will either have the TV on blast (since I can't hear under the dryer)or try and catch up on reading the unread copies of several magazine issues (I have 3 different magazine subscriptions with atleast 4-5 unread issues for each). When detangling or doing two strand twists or twist outs, I watch my DVR, I am the DVR queen…. so much so that I can't stand watching live tv… LOL So needless to say that makes me take longer when doing two strand twists or detangling b/c I have to stop and use my pinky (do to products on hands) to FFWD through commercials. Or I harass ppl on the phone using my bluetooth so I can still keep working on my her-rrrrr 🙂

I DC IN THE SHOWER…SO I TAKE A LONG SHOWER, WHEN I'M DONE, ITS DONE. DETANGLING DOES NOT TAKE A LONG TIME AND I USUALLY WEAR A LONG TSHIRT…I HATE BEING COLD WHICH IS WHY I DONT STYLE MY HAIR NAKED!!!
I try on clothes to figure out which ones will go great with the 'do'I will do. The best fits, whether it be funky, conservative or casual wins the style match for the week.
I catch up on Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Modern Family and RHOA while twisting.
If I'm styling, I'm recording a YT video.
If I'm under the dryer, I'm web surfing errrrythang, lol.
IAMSONOTMYHAIR
when I'm deep conditioning with a plastic cap i play just dance on the wii or i sit and read a book or watch youtube vids
Since I deep condition every week and Henna once a month on the weekend youll always find me in some type of plastic something. While im deep conditioning I spend time with the BF by playing video games with him (his stress reliever). And I twist my hair during Football Sunday with him, tradition at this point. Sometimes I like to be in the mirror while twisting my hair. But something about watching my team play keeps me motivates me to twist my head. They win & and my hairs done makes a happy Sunday.
"Don't judge me lol…..I always stand in the mirror pretending I am recording a youtube tutorial while I am styling! I hold the products up to the mirror and explain them and everything! #funnystuff"
OMGOSH 😀 I do the same thing!
When I'm stuck in the shower for two hours and my playlist on Youtube just stops for some reason (that ALWAYS happens!), I try to think of all the songs I know by heart and karaoke until I'm done detangling 😀
When I Henna I usually dance around my house pretending I'm a rock star 🙂
Wash days are usually my Goddess days. 😉
I shampoo my hair in the shower while singing loudly (bathroom acoustics are the bee-knees 😉 ), then I deep condition my hair under my huetiful steamer while watching a show or reading a book. I usually let the deep conditioner sit in my hair for 1-1.5 hours before I style my hair. I have a comfortable nook in my room that has a ridiculously comfortable chair, pictures of close friends, and is near a window and that's where I style my hair. Once all my styling is done, I celebrate with a bubble bath with dim lights, pedicure, and a facial before curling up in my bed with a cup of tea and my journal. To top it off the products I'm using for my hair smell like chocolate, vanilla custard, and gourmet coffee. Making wash day luxurious "me" time is how I look forward to it each week. =)
I read or watch youtube video's. Usually something related to hair or something funny. Coochieness on youtube cracks me up. Look him up for a good dose of entertainment. LOL.
When I'm Dcing I usually wear a cute hat and go to class or run errands. Rinse out the DC when I get home and depending on how much I have to do I read while combing my hair or watch youtube videos or watch a nice movie. This is all done in one day usually on a friday.
I watch natural hair Youtube Videos (I am subscribed to over 50 YTubers). It is SO entertaining! I also catch up on XFactor (#TeamAstro), America's Next Top Model, or Reed Between The Lines.
When I'm deep condtioning, I clean!!!
If it's something requiring time under the hooded dryer, I watch foreign movies with subtitles, or I geek out to Battlestar Galactica with the closed captioning on. Usually do my nails at the same time. If I'm free to move around I catch up on my magazines and do all the stuff around the house I've been putting off.
Read Curly Nikki!!!
I blast my music and clean. Might as well do the two things I love to hate at the same time lol.
I watch Bollywood movies. They're a guilty pleasure of mine, so I get loaded up with conditioner and oil and sit and watch my favorite numbers while I twist. Each number is like 9 -15 minutes long so it makes the time go REAL fast!
READ. There are not enough hours in my busy day to get in all the reading I'd like to do.
I usually hop on Youtube to watch Whoissugar, a natural who is too hilarious, catch up on my reading(under the steamer) or watch a movie. – TMonique
I nourish my soul with reading my bible as I nourish my hair with deep conditioning.
Don't judge me lol…..I always stand in the mirror pretending I am recording a youtube tutorial while I am styling! I hold the products up to the mirror and explain them and everything! #funnystuff
Watch. Breaking. Bad. It's off the chain.
"Stare at something for a little while , shut your eyes and study the after image."
Lmao! You're crazy, Nikki. I usually catch up on episodes of Y&R while detangling. I henna overnight, so I'm knocked out, no need for distractions. While deep conditioning, I usually read and catch up on blogs. I bought the Felicity box set and I watch that while I'm removing my Senegalese twists– I'm up to the 2nd or 3rd episode of season 3.
I listen to music while detangling and watch movies or documentaries while braiding/twisting/etc.
**Reporting from under my showercap as I post this.**
Since I'm in grad school and don't get a lot of time to read "fun books" or surf the internet (aka stalk CN posts). I curl up with a good read or catch up on CN, while I DC.
Oh the joy of wash and style day. To pass the time, I usually invite my husband for a little quality time. He massages my feet while I twist away, at the same time complimenting my good work and bearing his soul. I also do it in the nude so it's a good "get to know each other moment". After, my "do" is all done, we spend some good quality time together. It makes the night extra special since I'm not ignoring him all night 🙂
I haven't listened to Wale yet… next hair session 😉 My sister LOVES it, she said it's better thank Drake's. My friend's comment about drake's cd and excessive singing– 'damn, he could spit some time'
I let the dog get a little excerise walking on the treadmill. Lol

I throw on some comfy sweatpants and a t-shirt, get cozy on my couch, and watch several hours of Investigation Discovery while I comb and finger define my curls. It helps me to focus on something else, and not the fact that it's taking me 3-4 hours to do my hair.
P.S—-I was an only child growing up, so I have no problems entertaining myself now…LOL!
Did I hear Qhemet?
Laleepop…exercising while in plastic wrap and plastic cap will KILL YOU!!!! Please stop…Don't want you to have a heat stroke! LOL…I tried that once and could not stop sweating 40 minutes after.
This was a one time thing…but "one time in hair camp" and waiting for my henna timer to go off, I played with Hush (my 12 pound) cat. I put him down in a shopping bag and carried him around the house. I put on The Wobble, and I lifted Hush's front paws up and assisted him in doing the dance. Then we leaned in the window sill and looked outside. My mom came home with groceries, so I put Hush in the shopping cart to take him out to the car to get the groceries. Then I came back in and sang church songs, while playing the tambourine….Hush ran and hid!
I was shocked that Hush was such a good sport (I was shocked he didn't claw up my face), I gave him some yogurt (he LOVES it) and we watched The Long Kiss Goodnight….my fav movie.
Did you like Wale's CD? I LOVE it!
Anywho, I just listen to music and sing aloud terribly..lol
Sometimes I'll watch TV or put on a dvd or catch up on the DVTR
I usually do some ZUMBA!!!! Works up a sweat and it also heats up my head while Im deep conditiong, or henna-ing..
