A Good Hair Day…(that just keeps on giving)

A Good Hair Day...(that just keeps on giving)
It’s official, the cut is bomb… everything I envisioned. It volumized my situation and trimmed about 30 minutes off of my detangling and styling time. Got me grinning from temple to temple…

This is the result of a partial Twist-n-Curl. I say partial, ’cause I used about 4 flexis on the sides to create some fake layers. I styled wet, with, get this… MOUSSE! I’m wilin’, I know. But it was in a box of complimentary goodies and I couldn’t help myself. It’s alcohol free (but full of other ish) and my hair feels productless and airy. I’m gonna wait to review until I’ve tried it a few more times.

After rinsing my conditioner, I air dried for 15 minutes and applied a bit of Davines De-Stress Leave-in. I followed up with TIGI’s Totally Baked Hair Meringue (the mousse) and used a teeny bit of Davines’ Beautifying Potion to remove the twists once they were completely dry.

…and the Boogie Monster… literally.

‘who drank my apple juice?!’

Have you ever used mousse on your curls? What kind?

****************************

Last night, to preserve the curly awesomeness, I pineappled… loosely gathered my hair on top of my head with a satin scrunchy and covered with a satin bonnet.

not gonna lie, it was a little more difficult coaxing it all back down! Harder than usual… probably because I’m missing the weight of the extra length. Tonight, I may do a low loose pony instead 🙂

I love mousse, the Totally twisted by Herbal Essences, gives body and definition w/o weighing it down like gels did. I use a spray moisturizer under it. I just dampen my hair and work it through and air dry. I keep my natural hair on the short side, love, love it. No more gels flattening out my hair!!

    You are adorable!

You are so cute! I love this site 🙂

  • Habiba Kaba says:

i used mousse when i was relaxed, and i LOVED i mean, it was my bFFE, Aussie's mousse/leave in conditioner… they actually changed the name on the product, but its still available. it says that its a leave in too on the bottle. so it can be picked out. It never let me down or told my secrets (like that my hair was not really as cute and charming as it seemed, but was a real mean-girl kaliba most of the time… my hair was smooth, my curls were poppin, and it all looked under control. the best part though, was that my hair stayed extra moisturized, non greasy, non crunchy, and extra sexy. when i first BC'd, i could use the mousse still and i got the same effects. However, now that my hair is longer i hesitate only because i dont like to test stuff out on my hair cuz, like i said, my hair is a bully…

i'm sold on the hair cut its fantastic… love it.

  • The Kinky Apothecary says:

I was thinking recently, about how my braidouts don't hold up as long in Lagos humidity as they used to, and reading this, I remembered I used to use Jane Carter Solution Wrap & Roll. I vaguely remember it made my hair a little crispy, but now I've sorted out my moisture levels, I may revisit and play around with leave-ins/finishers. I just checked and still have half a bottle left.

That bathroom shot is beautiful, by the way!

GRRRRRRR. i hate you ( not really ) You are FF ( Freakin' Fabulous!) I at a downer time right now. I am closing on my first home which means a tight budget, which means not enough moolah to spend on my fav products (Kinky Curly, Beautiful Curls. sniff). I get back to my former self soon . In the mean time…STYLE ON MY SISTAHS! I must live vicariously through you! Stay Fab!

And Boogie's just so adorable! 🙂

Nikki you have beautiful hair, and I follow you on thursdays. I started trimming my own hair due to cost, and it turned out great doing the twist than cutting the ends, plus I co-shampoo and love it.thank you and please keep up the good work.

  • Michaela says:

Your hair looks great!!Whats your (or anyone who wants to answer)secret to great twists-n-curl? I tried it using kinky kurl kustard and it just did not last more than a day. Any suggestions would be great! thanks!

Loving yr hair – it looks so healthy & beautiful. You should be happy with the results.

As for mousse, I was addicted to clairol 3-in-1 conditioning mousse.

  • Positively Jewls says:

Very fab cut and boog as always, to cute!

  • Margaret says:

Nikki, the cut is fabulous!!! I love the volume, sheen and the length!!! I can see where this would decrease detangling and styling time. I have to comment on Boggie as well. She is a living doll!!! 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

Very very nice. I'm loving it!!! Boogie is a cutie. I've tried mousse when I was relaxed (loved it) and when transitioning I forget what brands. I didn't like the turn out. Maybe it was because I was transitioning. Have not tried it since being natural. My hair is very thick so I don't think it will work too well. Don't hurt to try though.

  • Jada07 says:

Beautiful as always. I haven't tried mousse but who knows what the future holds. BTW, try 4 smaller pineapples instead; helps each section stay where it's supposed to.

Curly NIkki – u gone make me go natural again!!!

  • Anonymous says:

Yes, Nikki, the hair is fab! I could never get that kind of volume. I, however, get my best definition and shine when I use Design Essentials Compositions Foaming Wrap Lotion with Coconut Oil & Wheat Protein. It tames my frizz and keeps the puffy roots at bay.

I had a Devacut too. It changed my life. Regular textured hair, but it did the damn thang! I was visiting NYC In November and left from the salon, had lunch, and went to a Broadway play and I felt super pretty. I haven't straigtened my hair since and plan to get a cut this spring @ the new Devachan in LA. 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

A bit off topic, but I couldn't resist chiming in:

Devacut is a unique and distinct process which is altogether different from cutting straightened natural hair. The hair is cut curl by curl- first in the dry state, then refined when hair is wet. It can be and has been done successfully on very curly hair that has kinky components.
Ouidad also has a carve and slice technique for cutting curly hair.

I have experienced all three ways of cutting curly/natural hair (Devachan technique, Ouidad and Straightened then cut) and BY FAR, the best results I've had have been with the Devachan technique. The straightened then cut comes in second and the Ouidad was something I would NEVER do again (a disaster).
The skill of the stylist, of course, plays a role. I went to THE Ouidad salon in NY, so I feel like I gave that technique the best chance. I had a highprofile, specially trained stylist do the Devachan cut and the straightened/cut technique was also done by a 'celebrity' stylist.

Nikki, your hair cut looks great. Gia is too cute!

I love it! I was considering getting my hair once the weather breaks (my hair keeps my neck warm), and this might just make me go through with it! I always use mousse on my sets, I've tried pomades, curling gels, ect. and I hated them all. Plan old Olive Oil setting mousse has been good to me. Lol

  • Anonymous says:

It's super cute Nikki! I actually love Paul Mitchell's conditioning foam mousse. Smells awesome and my hair loves it. Gives excellent and I mean excellent hold and shine for coil outs. You seriously don't have to use anything else in the hair when you use it. (3c curly with 4a tendencies)

  • Anonymous says:

I used Proclaim Foaming Wrap lotions when I used to flat iron my hair. Just re-visited the olive oil version (mixed with Elasta QP Feels Like Silk) for my first flexi rod set. Will use it again.

  • Anonymous says:

    @Michelle,

A Devacut would be one done on the hair while dry and curly.

I THINK that going by the pictures, Nikki's cut wasn't done that way but I could be wrong.

I actually go to a salon that does that type of cut but I think Nikki got what I get, which is a straightening and then a cut.

Don't know, but just cutting hair that happens to be natural isn't a devacut. You can probably find them on You Tube. I've watched them do it in my salon and they literally go curl by curl. I honestly don't know how they do it all when the hair is in tiny curls or very kinky.

  • leandra says:

Yeah, like someone else said "awesome hair day" would be more appropriate. WHAT?! It looks pretty amazing. I can't wait to get hair long enough to cut into a style that has me making that same understatement. Soon, though, right? 😉

"Who drank my apple juice?" LOL! Was that really what was on her mind?

  • Anonymous says:

Your hair looks so much healthier than before the cut! THe shape is awesome !

Your experience and the way your hair looks further validates one of my pet peeves. That is, us naturals should NOT be afraid to cut, if necessary, to achieve a healthier, sexier style! Lol! I get sick of seeing beautiful haired naturals with raggedy ends holding onto them for length.

It's not that your hair looked bad before, it's just that you brought out the bling by shaving off those ends in a nice way!
I had a Deva cut last year ( a serious process which took 1 hr and 45 min). I have maintained it by trimming the ends every 3 months and staying away from heat. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way the ends look when they have been clipped.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Hopefully, it will encourage some of us to be more comfortable with the beauty of hair HEALTH while reducing the intense obsession with length!!!! So awesome.

The shape and the volume is perfect! I'm going to look into this mousse!

  • Unknown says:

I use mousse all the time by Samy called Curl Activating Mousse. Its also alcohol free but I like it because it used to make my curls a little stiff so they held their definition after I un-twisted my twist out. But sadly my hair is getting used to it :/

  • Erica S says:

I used this cheap mousse/setting foam stuff on DRY hair when I did my first twistout ever and it was horrible! I'm not sure if it was the mousse, or the fact that it was on dry hair, or maybe since it was my first twistout ever, but it was just a terrible experience. lol

  • CURLYNIKKI says:

thanks ladies!!!!!! I'm so loving the shape! I just pulled it up into a pineapple… excited to see how it'll look tomorrow.

@ Dani, I JUST emailed you!

  • Dani @ OKDani.com says:

    @hairscapades – Great Memory girl!!!!

I did use mousse…like it was my JOB! Loved it, and will still use it if I'm in a pinch. I'd just use a moisturizer or leave-in of some sort first.

Nikki, your hair is lookin FIIIIEEERRRCCEEE

  • Anonymous says:

Wow, Nikki! I'm loving your haircut, too! It's looks nice, girl! To answer your question, I've never used mousse on my natural hair. I've heard some bad things about it, so I really have not been tempted to try it all. I still don't know if my curiosity is peaked, after hearing about your great experience with mousse. I think I'll pass on it! 🙂

  • hairscapades says:

Oh, and the shine is off the hook too!!! I haven't used mousse in ages and don't see myself going back down that path … but you wear it MORE than well!!

I think Ok Dani uses mousse … or, at least, she used to (if I'm remembering a youtuber correctly:). Seemed to work really well for her. So, go for yours;)!.

This is the post that I've been waiting to see!!! I wanted to see the full on TnC with the new cut. GORGEOUS NIK!! It reminds me of that huge TnC you had when you were pregnant or shortly thereafter! The volume is RIDIC!! And Boog is wil'ing!! LOL!!
