It’s Raining in Hollywood

It's Raining in Hollywood
If you’re looking for me to say something very profound after Whitney’s death, stop, because I’m not capable. What the hell do you say after a Queen passes? There are no words poignant enough. But what I can do is share my experiences the way many of you have on Facebook.

So let’s start with the fact that I came all the way to Hollywood only to discover that I’m SO NOT HOLLYWOOD. I felt fairly confident that I could get into some fabulous parties and by and large, I succeeded at that. In fact, once I secured some good content for y’all, to be honest, I got pretty lazy! We’re staying in the fabulous Luxe Condos across from the Staples Center where they deliver food 24 hours a day, Starbucks coffee is complimentary and the views are spectacular. We’re comfortable. So comfortable that I ended up skipping a couple of parties. I was supposed to hang out with my girls Kita & Mo at the Kelly Price and Friend Unplugged concert the other night, but kicked it with the fam instead. I had heard that Whitney Houston was on the guest list, but quite frankly, I didn’t believe it… there’s a lot of wishful thinking that goes on in this town.

Fast forward to yesterday evening, when Hubby and I decided to take advantage of our built in babysitter. We were invited to Cee Lo’s Primary Wave party, and being one of the few celebs Hubby was actually interested in meeting, we got dressed up and hit the streets for a much needed Date Night. So we’re cruising down Venice Boulevard and I’m on my Iphone catching up on NecoleBitchie when I see photos of Whitney at that damn party I skipped! I was fussing so much that we missed the turn in to the Cee-Lo party and as hubby busted a less than legal u-turn, I read this comment on CurlyNikki.com-

Oh my gawd did you ladies hear? Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48, it’s being broadcast on the news as I type.- Candace4life

Shocked, I text messaged my father to confirm, as him and my sister simultaneously called me to break the news. Devastated. By this time we were pulling up to valet. They say it never rains in Southern California, but it was last night and it felt entirely appropriate. The atmosphere was very somber.

Although I was originally disappointed about missing her performance, the truth is, I don’t want to see anyone’s last performance, or be at their last party. A beautiful young lady lost her equally beautiful mother last night… all too soon. So I hope you take the time to enjoy an occasional date night, but I also hope you enjoy your family nights. As another beautiful lady (Momma) always says, ‘our time here is short, we’re all just passing through, so live everyday like it’s your last’.

We managed to drink enough to have fun. I hope you enjoy the pics. Please say a prayer for Ms. Houston’s family and for all the daughters who’ve lost their mothers.

My $48 dress that received no less than 48 compliments!
It was a hit. Got it from Asos, of course!

Her death was very hard for me. She passed away on my son's birthday. We were all at his 13th bowling party, and someone said it over the loud speaker, and we (my family & friends) just started balling. I couldn't believe it. RIP MS. Whitney…You're still the "VOICE" of a generation.

  • Leanna says:

JUST GOT ON THE TREADMILL AT THE GYM AND THE LITTLE TV ON IT HAPPENED TO BE ON THE NEWS…..SHE HELPED MOLD MY VOICE AND COUNTLESS OTHER SINGERS…SHE WILL MOST CERTAINLY BE MISSED RIP WHITNEY YOU ARE LOVED!

  • Charris says:

I was a home and turn the channel to the news and all I could say was "NO,NO,NO!" My son not knowing who she really was, looked at me like what? I ran in the other room to tell my husband, who loves Whitney Houston. From the time we met, he has told me that Whitney is the greatest singer of all time. He was in dis-belief, he couldn't watch the tributes it made him sad. We felt like she was family, considering she reminds us of my husbands mom in some crazy way.

    Hilarious video!

  • Curltastic Nia says:

When I heard the news, I was packing up to leave a vacation in Costa Rica with my mom and my sister. My sister saw it first on facebook so I proceeded to get on Twitter. Then onto yahoo, and sure enough there was that morbid, devastating and heart-breaking news. I have been a Whitney Houston fan for quite some time. I'm only 19 but from the first song I heard from here I knew that I had an idol. Her voice resonated with me and I wanted to work to become just as amazing.

I had to wake my mother up and break the news. She jumped out the bed asking questions I simply could not answer.

I can't even imagine how Bobbi Christina must feel. She lost her mother and on top of it have to here people talking down about her mother and her previous inner battle with demons. I pray that her family stays strong in this time of sorrow. We lost a legend. She may be gone but she will live on in our hearts and through her music.

  • Anonymous says:

Was in bed asleep, woken up by my mums shouting. Will be praying for her family, especially her daughter.

On a side note you look very elegant and classy in that dress Nikki. Thanks for re-introducing me to ASOS.

Those guys in the video…smh…I cried with laughter. They're so bad they're really, really good LOOOL.

  • Randi 415 says:

I was actually on my way out for a date as well (with my 14yr old daughter) we had just hopped in the car on our way to dinner and the first thing I heard was "they tried to resuscitate her" and I thought oh wow someone died. Then they said "Rest in Peace Whitney Houston" I felt so depressed all of a sudden but at the same time thankful that I decided to getaway and have a mommy/daughter weekend. I couldn't imagine what it's like to lose a mother at such a young age. Whitney was such a beautiful talented woman.

    Love the video lmao!!

I was in my hotel room in LA with my little one and family trying to get hype to go to the Clive Davis party. I was ready to meet all types of icons, perhaps Whitney included! Needless to say, once we saw the news on tv, I didn't feel like doing much of anything else. The whole climate of LA seemed to change instantly. Such sad news.

  • latrishia says:

I was sitting on my sofa watching abc and breaking news came through…. The loss of Whitney Houston…. my response… OMG!!!!

  • InNARA2 says:

In London early Sunday morning heard the news. At first did not believe it then family/friends were texting…. RIP Ms Whitney Houston.

  • Anonymous says:

I was at home, browsing the web. Then I went on Twitter and saw people tweeting about it, which I always take as an indication to make sure the news is real on reputable news sites. Needless to say I got to TMZ and could only shake my head.

My heart hurts for Bobbi K. That girl is going to need her family more than ever. When my mother passed after a two-year battle with cancer I was always aware of the possibility of her dying but when it actually happens? Shock to your system. I was stunned for almost a year afterwards, on/off crying and confiding and sleeping and barely eating.

    My god. RIP Whit. 🙁

Nikki, if you would have went to Kelly Price's party you would have seen her last performance!

i was on line sat evening surfing the net. i turned off the compu and then remembered there was something else i needed to check on. my home page is the ny times. when i clicked on, i noticed they had a photo of Whitney Houston. i scrolled down to see if they were doing a feature on her. i saw the "1963-2012" next to her name. i could not believe it. i went to tell my mom who is also a fan. then i came back to the compu and just sobbed. i spent the next 45 minutes or so watching/listening to her music on line via youtube (one moment in time, the greatest love, and i will always love you). later, i watched cnn coverage, kept listening to what others were saying. somehow, it just seemed so surreal. my thoughts and prayers go out to her family, especially to her mother and her daughter. many of us were so proud of Whitney Houston. so talented, so gifted. just gone too soon. so tragic. we will never forget her, and her music will live on forever.

  • Syd says:

I was at Spa Nordstrom with my sister enjoying a much needed pedicure. . . Another client came in and was talking about it and that's when she told us what happened. It was truly a shock. I proceeded to text my brother (with whom I had just been discussing Whitney with that morning)and sure enough it was all over CNN. What a talent, she will be missed.

  • Anonymous says:

I was sitting on my couch watching TV when a friend text me about Whitney. Of course I didn't believe such a CRAZY rumor! But when another friend texted me about it, I knew it had to be true because this girl keeps up on ALL AND I MEAN ALL celebrity news!

My heart truely goes out to the Huston family! I lost my mom so I REALLY understand what Bobby Christina is going through. It's is NOTHING LIKE LOSING YOUR MOTHER…BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU!!! I felt like I was alone in this world even though I had 5 other siblings. Also I feel for Whitney's mom and Bobby as well. I know Bobby well…and the New Edition group, we all grew up together in Boston. So sad for them all!

  • Dawn says:

I was at the "Love & Laughter" tour featuring Rickey Smiley, Babyface, and Kem. Just before the show started, my mother called to ask me a question. As she's talking, she says "Whitney Houston died." I said "What?!" She said, "It just went across the bottom of the screen on the TV." When I hung up with her, my sis-in-law called my husband and told him the same thing. I was crushed! You get such an empty feeling when you hear stuff like that. When the show began, Rickey Smiley requested a moment of silence. When Babyface came out, he requested the same thing; he also sang the song he wrote for Whitney in acapella (Shoop) and talked about how he worked with her on the "Waiting to Exhale" CD. He got choked up while talking. Kem dedicated his song "You're on My Mind" to her and showed a video of pics of her during the song. It was a wonderful and emotional concert.

I was at the store w/my other half and his son and my phone was blowing up w/messages from Facebook and my niece asking me if it was true and my cusions confirming it to her. I was and still in shock. I loved her and her music and hope she is in peace w/the rest of God's angels.

Wow…..When I heard about my girl WHITNEY-My sister and I were about to get out the car to order food. We just left my counsin house. My cousin called my cell to tell us, "Whitney Houston died." At first I thought it was one of those rumors that comes out now and then about famous people dying. We were so upset, we did not order anything and we couldn't eat. I loved Whitney….we grew up on her music. A few of her songs meant a lot to me. Love and will miss you Whitney. It so hard to lose your Mommy….I know because I lost mines last year. 🙁

Ironically, I was doing my hair, I had put on Curl Junkie's Hibiscous and Banana Treatment on my hair. Then I heard the news and my heart dropped. You see, I grew up on Whitney Houston, literally. She was 48 and I am 49, soon to be 50….There will only be one Whitney in this lifetime. I know she is with the Father in heaven. God Bless her family and many many friends and fans!

  • Kay says:

Teyana Taylor is my girlcrush! Love, love her!

Whitney-I thought it was a nasty rumor. I was sitting on my couch air drying my hair when I received a text from my line sister…I feel awful for her daughter and that all these ppl are being so judgmental. I just hope she is finally at some peace.

  • Anonymous says:

PLEASE do an interview soon with Teyana Taylor. I LOVE her hair in that picture, how did she do it?!?!?!?!

Oh and, Boogie's headscarf, AMAZING! How did you get that style, more importantly, where her gandmother buy that?!?!

So sad to hear about Whitney, I was just SHOCKED.

I was at a Vagina Monologues production at my university with my two best friends. We all had plans of studying afterwards but just enjoyed each other's company; and I'm so glad we did because we truly never know when our time here will be done.
I'll definitely be praying for her daughter. I was 16 when my mother, who was 47, died. Like CN mentioned the importance of family nights, I'm so glad our last night spent together was just a chill evening of visiting family then watching an old Samuel L. Jackson movie.

Did anyone see her music video when she was wearing this fantastic afro wig (music video: I Learned from the Best, I Learned from You)–check it out, she's representing the curls!

  • Anonymous says:

I am very hurt and just bothered over Whitney's passing. I have always been rooting for her. When others compared her to other singers, like Mariah, I stood up for Whitney because she was the Woman. not saying there aren't other great singers. Chaka, Aretha, heck even Mariah BUT is only one Whitney. She did something and had something that is incomparable. The stunning looks, the presence to light up a room, the incredible instrument that was her voice. God put a divine voice in a beautiful vessel. I pray that she is truly at peace now and i pray for her mother, Cissy (because no parent should have to bury their child), daughter Bobbi (because this treasure was her mother) and the rest of her loved ones. I can't go into more details as to what she meant to me as a black female and what she did to my heart and soul because i feel so sad right now. The king and QUEEN of Pop are gone now. i don't know what else to say right now. i am just sad.

  • Anonymous says:

YES YES YES!!! @ anon 2:27. Ms. Whitney was born to sang!!Not taught to sing and use autotune… whispers beyonce and others…. She had a God given talent. No one can touch her and may never will. She was the epitome of true beauty, talent, and class. My heart hurts so bad because she is gone. But she did leave us with a gift that keeps on giving. Which is her beautiful voice. Whitney, we will always love you RIP. To Bobbi Christina, Cissy, and Bobby my prayers are with you.

  • Jay-Jay says:

I was online checking my emails and my friend, who was on a date at the movies, texted me saying,"Whitney Houston died." I texted her like,"where did you hear that from? The gossip blogs always starting some rumor." Then I looked on MSN main page and it had the Breaking News it flaming red saying that she died. I froze, just staring at it like wow.

I mean I thought I was Whitney Houston when I was little. I remember putting on my mothers frosted pink lipstick, singing in the mirror with a rounded brush as my microphone. I sung at a drop of a dime whenever someone told me to sing a Whitney Houston song. Just sad

My prayers and deepest condolences go out to her family and her daughter….

May Ms. Whitney Houston rest in peace. She had an amazing journey. I pray for her daughter, mother and all other relatives and true friends who have been haunted by Whitney's struggles and now face mourning a major loss.

Such a tragic loss! A beautifully gifted woman who freely and with humility, shared her gift with the world. It seems as though the pressures and pain of personal struggles having to be lived out publicly became an albatross around her neck. Unlike many people who seek celebrity with relative superficiality and essentially little to no talent, Whitney had a God given talent so big that it, I think, at times it was tough for her to maintain balance and deal with the pressure of a demanding public wanting her to keep serving up unlimited hit after hit. Sometimes, we just need to let people live, have compassion for the struggles they have which we may not be capable of understanding, maintain balance, health and humility at ALL COSTS. Build your self-esteem on SOLID ground and you have a much better chance of surviving whatever life throws your way ( and wherever it throws it) in a way that will lessen the chance of tragic self-inflicted consequences.

RIP Ms. Whitney! You and your talent will be sorely missed.

When Whitney was up…everyone loved her, but when she struggled to rise from her addiction we didn't offer her the encouragement that she needed, but instead the media mocked her and her fans walked out on her shows. I wouldn't care if she sounded like a muzzled bird, she is and always will be a star with the voice of an angel. This should be a lesson to us all. Support and love those around you. Your encourage may just be all they need to rise above their problems! RIP Ms. Houston

So true anon 2:27 p.m. Beyonce is no singing contemporary of Ms. Houston, as her talent and range were in a class all their own. The individual who wrote that needs to listen to Ms. Houston's recordings and come back with another verdict. And like most have said, the family needs prayer…silver and gold pass away.

  • Anonymous says:

@anonymous 4.31PM, I thought the same thing today. Whitney was talented but unfortunately the addictions stole a lot from her. The celebrities have a lot of money and fame but alot of them are really tortured on the inside. Hopefully, now her soul is at peace.

Exactly – anon 3:28. We tend to put the wrong people up on pedestals. We should enjoy their movies, enjoy their songs but see them for whom they really are…humans. Humans just like the rest of us. Its still hard to take the news, though I wasn't totally surprised. Whitney had real talent – such a pure voice; certainly not like half of these "record studio" singers of today. And she was definitely a class act on stage. She was sexy without being slutty. What a sad Black History Month but I take comfort in knowing 2 things: 1. Whitney is finally at peace and 2. Can you imagine Don Cornelius having Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Heavy D, Etta James, and now Whitney Houston all together??? What a par-tay! Resting in Love, Peace and Souuuullll.

She set the standard that millions continue to try to emulate even today. No unnecessary voice histrionics, incessant booty shaking, skimpy costumes, autotune, etc. Just pure talent. No disrespect to B or any of the current recording stars but none of them come close to Whitney…and never will. So very sad, I can't believe it…and I am so very tired of those trying to glamorize her demons.. RIP songbird! If you must say something about her, if you need a status..take this:
    415 Awards, 2 Emmys, 6 Grammys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 Billboard Awards & sold 300,000,000 Albums
    RIP Whitney Houston

She was my hero. I cried when I received the news.

I was sitting on the couch watching the lion king with my boyfriend when my sister texted me. All I could reply back was "joke?" cause i knew it couldn't be real. I immediately grabbed my ipod to look it up myself and lo and behold it was true. I told both of my parents and they were as shocked as I was. Her daughter is my age, my heart is just so heavy for her. May the voice of a generation and the greatest voice of all time R.I.P with the heavenly host.

Nikki you looked FAB! Glad to see you guys had a great time.

As for the news about Whitney, I was on the phone with my boyfriend. I had just left a clothing store and we were just talking. And all of a sudden he says "Whitney houston just died, it's going across the bottom of MSNBC!" We both just kinda sat there on the phone in awe. Neither of us could believe it. She will truly be missed!

I got the CNN alert on my iPad as I was lurking the forums at around 8:30 last night…I feel as though I have lost a family member. I grew UP with her music…this stings as bad as Michael Jackson. She was the Beyonce of the 80s/.90s…So beautiful, talented, and just such a positive inspiration. May she rest in peace…

In the car with my husband & sis in law,WHUR here in the DMV announcement a special news report….we were shocked like everyone, but for some reason not surprised with the Media Take Story I had just seen the day before….sad

    nikki you look stunning…

i am devastated about this whitney thing..1st michael now this..i am a 80s baby so i still have whitney's 1st album on cassette..which i would sing with over and over and over again in my star search boom box trying to emulate that beautiful instrument of a voice….i feel for her mother who did what she could but lost her child..i feel for her daughter..i can't imagine this world without my mom and i'm almost twice her age..and i feel for all of us who lost a magnificent voice….another one gone too soon..it's so sad we don't celebrate the good instead of the bad in folks while they are still here. we are all human and all have flaws. RIP Whitney…

oh i argued via text with 2 of my girlfriends about if it was true b/c i couldn't find it on the net anywhere…5 minutes later it was confirmed….so devastated…still

I was on twitter reading the many tweets that came across my screen but I just couldn't believe it because after all, this is twitter – they kill celebrities every damn day. Then I woke up and realized, it was for real, oh my gawddddd i'm so heartbroken. My heart goes out to her daughter and the rest of her family.
Miss Whitney Houston, May your soul rest in peace mama.

I was on the phone with one of my girl buds when another beeped the line to tell. At first I thought it was another of those cruel rumors going around these days (like the one about Eddie Murphy). I've never been one to cry over celebrity deaths but it just so happens I'd just visited my grandmother in her nursing home an hour before and this news just put into perspective how priceless time with loved ones is. This news made me ball my eyes out the rest of the night as I could understand the pain Bobbi Christina must be feeling to lose her mom.

Sitting at home reading FB. I was just in shock and stayed on FB reading all the tributes and status updates. Posted videos of my favorite two Whitney songs on my blog and listened to them. Then turned on CNN at a certain point to listen to various interviews with people who knew Whitney. Finally, turned to VH-1 Soul to listen to the marathon of songs.

As you said, thinking of a daughter who lost her mother. I think of that line from A Bronx Tale though. Just so sad … a star that shone so brightly.

OMG Nikki, you look beautiful! You and your hubby are SOOOOOO Hollywood! Maybe you should think about moving out there! Glad you had fun, and I also was saddened by the news of Whitney Houston. While we all want to remember her for the good times, let's not forget that it was probably her "bad times" that caused her death. Let us all remain drug-free for ourselves as well as our families! Love ya, Nikki, and thanks for all you do.

I heard this news this morning as I was playing on Twitter. Of course, I thought I was yet another cruel joke, so I took to the search engines. Tears were shed. Immediately. I never met her, but it was if I lost family. She had that much of an impact on my life. My mind went immediately back to being that 9 year old little girl seeing this beautiful, angelic person on my screen singing for Nelson Mandela. She will forever be missed.

Wise words from momma CN. My mom says the same thing. God comfort Cissy, Bobby Kristina and Bobby during this trying time.

    1Love,

I was chilling in my friend's dorm room. When her roommate told us. We was like. Noooo. Until BET put it up and we was like OMG this is soo sad. I called and told my mom and she was real upset and she said that messed up her night. Like I never really listened to her music all like that but it just bothers me because she has one child that has no mother. I am young myself and I already lost my father so my prayers goes out to the houston family, bobby and bobbychristen. God please and bless and watch over them in their time of need <3
