Shanti’s Twist-Out Technique

Shanti's Twist-Out Technique

 Shanti of AroundTheWayCurls

I began with freshly washed hair. I then deep conditioned with Mix Chicks deep conditioner which I allowed to sit on my hair for an hour before rinsing. After rinsing, I applied Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner to my wet hair followed by a light almond oil.

Shanti's Twist-Out Technique

I then parted a side part in my damp hair and began to do FLAT two strand twists. Before twisting I took a quarter size amount of the SheaMoisture and applied it to the section of hair that I intended to twist. My product application was as follows.

1. Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave in
2. Almond Oil
3. SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

I twisted 3 twist on one side and two twist on the opposite side, ending with 4 twists in the back. The reasoning for this is I wanted to twist my hair in the direction that I want it to fall. I want my hair to fall dramatically to the side therefore I parted on the side nearly passed my right eyebrow. This leaves me with more hair to manage on one side then the other. That is my intention.
Side part with 3 FLAT twists going to the side

2 Twists on opposite side

4 (or is that 5) FLAT twist extending downward.

I then covered my hair and went to sleep to allow it to dry. Upon waking and getting ready for my day (pictured) I made sure my hair was completely dry and began to carefully unravel my twists.
I then take the side with less hair and smooth it towards the back securing it with this handy dandy device that can be purchased at your local drug or beauty supply store.

After pinning the top hair to also go to the side. Here are the results. Easy Breezy.

The Product Reviews

SheMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie = B

Price – I love this stuff! It works wonders for my wash and gos.
The price is so reasonable. Just 9.99 for a huge tub of great quality, no nonsense goodness.

Hold – It gets a B for wash and goes but a C for twist outs. For my wash and goes the curl is well defined and soft. For this twist out my hair felt really fluffy and ready to poof up at any minute. Maybe I should have been more generous with my application but it just didn’t hold that well. It did for my twist out for the event though. Hmmm? I will have to do some experimenting. It may be my human error.

Smell- Sweet baby Jesus this stuff smells great.

Overall scoring – I believe that the SheaMoisture brand is soon to reign as one of the most effective and beloved hair products in the natural hair community. It’s a quality product with a reasonable price. It can’t get no betta.

Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner = A-

Scent- In my opinion it was awful. It smelled like I had dish detergent on my head. Not my cup of tea

Slip– I wish there was more slip to this DC. It did not give me the glide that I was hoping for. Nonetheless it is incredibly thick. To me, that is the way a DC should feel- like creamy thick gunk. Just do not expect to be able to detangle with ease with this in your hair.

Moisturizing qualities- Mixed Chicks did their damn thing! I must say Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner does nothing for my hair. My hair laughs in the face of that stuff but my hair was shook like a mugg when their DC came and laid the smack down on it’s dry ass! I left the DC on for an hour and upon rinsing, my hair felt great. It did not rinse with a tacky, weighed down feeling that some DC cause. Instead, my hair felt really clean and light yet extremely moisturized and happy. I am writing this review 2 days later and my hair still feels great. I really recommend those turned off by Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner to make room in their hearts for their DC because the brand deserves redemption. The Mixed Chicks deep conditioner is the bomb.com even if it smells like dish detergent.

    I really like this style.

For more hold with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, try mixing it with Eco Styling Gel with Olive Oil …I saw a youtuber do this ( can't remember which one tho) and the hold was firmer. Hope this helps.

Your hair is gawgeous!! I will definitely be trying this style after a few prepoo treatments. Thanks for the share!

Love it, love it, love it !!!!!!!

  • Markesha says:

I love Shea Moisture, all of the product hair and body! I agree that its better for wash and go's as oppose to twist sets. I love Mixed Chicks too never tried the DC but I love the leave in for wash and go's. I am really happy that they now sell it at Target because it was hard to find!

  • London Curly says:

This is the first twist out method that has worked on my hair and left me with great definition without hardness, dryness and crunch.
After a couple of days I got lazy and pineappled instead of re-twisting. The twist out started to look a bit frizzy and messy but I still had ok definition and after dampening with water/Curls leave in conditioner, sealing with oil then applying a little Darcy's Botanicals Sweet Cocoa Bean Curl Smoothing Cream I wore my hair out in big chunky curls for an evening event.
I have looser curls at the nape of my head so there was a bit of a problem with the twists at the back loosening at the bottom but next time I can try to fix this by using a couple of flexi-rods.
    Highly recommended.

  • Lorian says:

This style is so pretty. I just twisted my hair to try it…it seems like my hair NEVER gets dry!!! And…I already know it's going to be sticking up everywhere no matter what direction I twist it or if I tie it down for a week…it will still stick straight out. I'm frustrated already and just got the twists in my head. I'm gunna stop looking at the pics so I can adjust to how it will look on my hair…only time will tell…

That's not Type 4 hair, it's a 3. Her hair is more like Shelli of Hairscapdes. We know Type 4 when we see it but lovely do!

I'll bet half these women are going to go and and buy the exact some products and the results won't be close to hers. You don't have to blindly follow people's regimines and methods verbatum. Do what works for your hair type and you won't be as discouraged in the end.

  • ShawnTe Pierce says:

I love your results! I will need to find something in place of the SM curl enhancing smoothie. It leaves my hair crunchy and feeling dry. 🙁

  • Unknown says:

I definitely plan on trying this technique

Where can you purchase these products?

  • Positively Jewls says:

Gorgeous!! I love styles like this and really need to make it my business to flat twist as I believe it may come out better then a two stand twist. Side note:I happened to look down at the ad and saw Beautiful Textures product, I am actually using the moisturizer at the moment and just ran out so picking up more today. Ladies, this product is the business if you want to try something new. This product actually gave me the Tracy Ellis hair I love and I've been hooked ever since.

  • AngelicaKimberly says:

I absolutely LOVE this!!! I was looking for a nice style to wear this weekend. I have a graduation to attend. 🙂

  • Queen Eye Cee says:

    GORGEOUS!!!

  • Bryanna says:

Naptural85 uses this technique. Her race has nothing to do with the outcome to all of the people who keep saying that, its just how she styled her hair and what she used. I belive that the definition was AMAZING ;).

  • Cydni Perkins says:

I've used both Mixed Chicks and Shea Moisture and I absolutely love both! I use Shea moisture for all twist outs. I had to take the Mixed Chicks out of my regimen because Its not all natural. Im on the all natural bandwagon. lol. and I didnt really like the price. Its really expensive. but its still a great product. Shea Moisture will stay in my regimen.

  • Ann says:

Everyone's hair will not look like this, at this same length and thickness. I got tired of mine and all of the post with pictures, b/c it takes a lot of work and effort, and your hair will not look like the picture or videos. Oh well…

  • Anonymous says:

Love the Shea Moisture! It has a great hold for my hair. It does cause some poof, but that's from all the moisture it draws to your hair. My hair is a 4-whaterver-alphabet, so the moisture is a must to have my nice I love mixing it with EVOO in the summer. Leaves my hair really soft, nice little curls, and no frizz 🙂

  • Jazred says:

Like all the other comments I luv the way it came out. Doesn't seem like much work with the twist that size, I have all those products except mixed chicks dc. I'll definitely try it this weekend.

  • Kelly says:

In love with how moisturized your hair looks.

I'm so loving this hairstyle. Dope!!! Oh,I love the Shea Moisture line on my hair as well. I found that the milk is a good hold for twist outs. I get 4 day hair with that product

I love your hair!!! Your post was both informative and hilarious, I chuckled a lot while reading the Mixed Chicks DC laying the smack down lol. Thanks for the product review and the awesome style.

  • Michelle B says:

Dope hair… Great idea duh, why not twist the way you want it to fall instead of forcing and pinning it in a different direction than you twisted it. (light bulb moment) Anyway, thanks for the idea your hair is gorgeous!

  • EandJ says:

This is gorgeous. I dont use any of these. Now I really want to try the mixed chicks deep conditioner on my daughter.

First – love the hair! Beautiful.

I tried the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and it didn't work for me. It always felt good going on but my hair would be dry as a bone and would feel tacky the next day.

Never tried the Mixed Chicks conditioner but heared nice things. Might have to give it a go.

  • DiscoveringNatural says:

I love Shea Moisture Curl Enhanced Smoothie mixed with a little Glycerine. For some reason this formula gives me the fluffy curl look I need.

OMG! Your hair is GORGEOUS! Surprisily I did the same thing to my hair last night, with the same Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie, but instead of sweet almond oil, I used castor oil to seal the ends. I have yet to unbraid it, but I pray it ends up looking like yours. Wish me luck.

2 strand twist outs are my go to style–I've tried flat twisting and yeah, it didn't work out to well! lol

The only products I use for my twist-outs after washing and conditioning is some sort of butter (CD or Bee Mine). I find that using too many products weighs more 4a/b hair down even though it is thick.

I tried Shea Moisture Enhancing Smoothie–it's too heavy and leaves a lot of residue. No bueno!

    P.S.–Shanti, your hair is gorgeous!

Black women have different textures of hair get over it already. Everyone doesn't have 4c hair or even type 3 hair we are all different and beautiful.

  • RazzyYazzy says:

I love these twists. I have two issues, flat twisting my hair when wet is a nightmare for me. Second thing, I have never gone to bed to wake up with dry hair in the morning! But, I am inspired. I will try this on dry hair, dampened slightly with product.

  • Devon says:

Hot dayum Shanti, killing it! I want to try this, but my flat twisitn skills SUCK:(

  • truthseeker411/reddgirl says:

Very nice!!! I love. I am experimenting with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I will see what happnens!

  • Anonymous says:

Haven't tried the curl enhancing smoothie yet for twist outs, but the deep treatment masque, OMG the best twist outs ever!! I get both moisture and definition. I've tried lots of stuff but nothing compares to when I use this stuff.

  • Anonymous says:

@ 12:21PM, Shanti isn't a type 2! lol Yes, her hair look's lush, thick, and has a beautiful sheen/shine to it. But my daughter has the same texture of hair and she yields the same results after products and styling. But she isn't a type 2 (Think Chilli from TLC, She's a 2). If you use the right products for YOUR HAIR and proper techniques. You too can achieve GREAT results!:)

  • watkinsabob says:

hilarious post. cant wait to try these products!

  • Lola says:

Looking great! It's good the products worked for you. I might have to try that Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

  • Nique says:

I love the results. I love my Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. As for the Mixed Chicks deep conditioner, I use the Mixed Silk deep conditioner(knock off) from Sallys and it works great.

I disagree with Anonymous about 2-3 hair. I have 3c hair and i CANNOT do wash and goes on my hair. I HAVE to twist it and if i want some curl to it, i have to use product and it can take anywhere from an hour and a half to 2 hours to do my hair and im black. Black people's hair comes in many different textures and colors. You might not be 2-3 but someone else may be and its to help them. Just because someone has type 2-3 hair doesnt mean its easy because my mom still wont do my hair sometimes.

  • Nikell says:

This style is SOOO pretty! I can't wait for my hair to grow out a bit more so I can try this out.

  • Anonymous says:

Didn't have too much luck with the Shea Moisture line for my 4a/C hair. Just didn't like it (really wanted too). But my daughter on the other hand, another story, she Love's the stuff!

  • Anonymous says:

Nice!! Looove the method that you did you flat twists. I've been doing them for years and never thought of doing them from ear to ear! I have 4c type hair and can't wait to see the outcome.

  • Anonymous says:

    LMAO!

  • kAI says:

    LMAO!!!!
" My hair laughs in the face of that stuff but my hair was shook like a mugg when their DC came and laid the smack down on it's dry ass! "

  • Anonymous says:

Even if i did TRY doing the same method she did, my results wouldn't even come CLOSE to looking liker hers.

She doesn't even look like a Type 4 w/the texture she has! She looks more like a damn silky Type 2 at that!! Look at how naturally straight her roots are!! So i highly doubt my results on my ACTUAL Type 4 hair will end up looking like hers!

Most Black women have either kinky/coily 4a, 4a/4b, 4c, 4/a/b/c, or 4a/with SOME 3c. I'm so damn tired of seeing these silky Type 2s and loose 3s! Most of us Black women don't have that type of hair!! All Type 2-3 women have to do is wash their hair, put product in it and they have waves or curls galore! Even Curly Nikki herself!

    rant over.

  • Anonymous says:

Shanti, your hair looks amazing! A note about the Curl Enhancing Smoothie…it is not suppose to provide hold. I think it is suppose to moisturize. I found that the Shea Moisture Treatment Mask is great for twist outs since it provides great hold.

  • Anonymous says:

Your hair is beautiful and that style is grande!

Drying is my issue… I can see where my twist outs would be better if my hair is dry.. I'm going to have to go for heat.

  • Meme says:

I bought Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie the other day I love that it's thick so I know it will last a long time. I love the smell. I used some yesturday when taking out my finger curls. It helped with fizz and my hair is still soft even when slept on with no bonet. I love Shea Moisture!

  • African Violet says:

Does the Curl Enhancing Smoothie claim to hold? I have a jar and I use it for my twist outs, but I didn't realize hat it was supposed to hold. I like it because it adds softness to my hair.

Anyway, that hairdo was dope, Shanti!

  • Tonya says:

    super cute!

  • Anonymous says:

    Gorg!!

  • Monique says:

Your hair is adorable. I'm going to try chunkier flat twists.

  • Anonymous says:

    CUTE!

  • Anonymous says:

LOL @ smackdown on dry @ss!

I have also tried the Shea Moisture Smoothie on my tightly kinky twistouts and got nothing but frizz. It offers softness and suppleness, but did not provide hold for my 4c coils. It was an epic fail on my twistout.

Too scared to try the Mixed Chicks line – not with my frizzy/kinky hair. Playing with my money is like playing with my emotions.

  • blendedbeauty says:

video please i want to learn how to twist like that

  • Unknown says:

Love the twist pattern, it looks like something I can do with my limited time. I am going to try this out this weekend.

  • Annie L. says:

You look fabulous! I've used KKKT as a styler, a condish and also as a detangler under dire circumstances. I would dilute it with water to no end and it still did its job but the smell began to get on my nerves and I didn't love the way my hair felt with it when left in. I'm still ambivalent about its usefulness but I loved your technique and results!

  • L says:

Just beautiful hair period!!! Wish mine were that lush and thick!

  • Anonymous says:

I LOVE SheMoisture curl enhancing smoothie!!

  • KayC, The Quiet Storm says:

I agree with the Mixed Chicks review. My hair laughed at the leave-in but loves the deep treatment. I have not tried the curl enhancing smoothie. Maybe with the next buy one get one 50% off sale at Walgreens.

  • Unknown says:

I've been using and love the Mixed Chicks DC too! Love that style! My hair isn't as long but I think I can still pull it off! Thanks for sharing!
