Please, introduce yourself!
Hi, I’m Lesley Chung and I ventured into the world of this social media through a friend of mine who suggested that I document my natural hair journey. I was one for RELIGIOUSLY getting my hair done and did not know a thing about my hair AT ALL. Once I left the creamy crack behind its been ONE HUGE learning experience. I have to admit I was scared as hell! All this coming from a girl who only knew how to wrap her hair at night for the next morning and just recently mastered pin curling (lol). Now you want me to do MY OWN HAIR.
What is your current hair care regimen?
My current hair care regimen is a wash n go. I cleanse my scalp twice a month with DevaCurl No Poo, apply my leave in of choice either Tresemme Naturals or Paul Mitchell The Conditioner and detangle my hair, I seal in the moisture with Coconut Oil, then follow up with Uncle Funky’s Daughter’s Curly Magic is my gel of choice. [THIS STUFF IS THE TRUTH FOR MY HAIR] and allow it to air-dry. I have lately been experiencing with the Eco Gels; but UFD is my staple. Every Wednesday and Saturday I co wash my hair with Suave Naturals then rinse it out and leave in either PM or TN, detangle, seal my hair with coconut oil, & add some UFD and go. I deep condition my hair weekly using Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque or the Curl Junkie products. I’m pretty lazy so I do an over night deep conditioning and rinse it out the next morning. This makes detangling the next day a breeze!
What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
The hair typing system confuses me IMMENSELY and from what others have told me I range between 3c to 4a. I follow the Curly Girl Method and according to the Curly Girl Handbook I have head full of corkscrew curls. I have a section of hair near my ear (lol) that is a bit looser (not by much) then the pencil shape corkscrews all over my head. I have SUPER DUPER thick hair and it constantly needs to be moisturized. The Curly Girl Method has been a god send for my hair and me because its EASY. I’ve been doing the CG Method for the past 5 months and its going really well.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural or have you been relaxer free all your life?
I was fortunate to have a very supportive family, boyfriend and friends behind my decision. What was the most ironic thing about me going natural was that the woman who DID my hair informed me that she does NOT work on natural hair and SHE’S NATURAL. I thought that was funny (lol). I was lucky to receive help from my close friend who is a stylist and fellow natural.
-Of course my mother constantly reminds me that she did NOT want to put a relaxer in my hair. She never lets me forget so I have to say it for the world to hear that my mother was right…like most moms are anyway. I did beg for a relaxer soo soo many moons ago. My mother was the happiest that I decided to go natural.
Did you big chop or transition, for how long? If you’ve always been natural, did you ever have any curly hair girl insecurities? If so, what helped you adjust to having naturally curly hair over the years?
I transitioned for 16 months wearing various styles of weaves for a several months from pixie cuts to bobs. Then my friend suggested that I begin to learn my hair and I looked at her like she was crazy; but she made sense. In the summer of 2011, I began to do twist outs and braid outs. I learned rather quickly how to master flat twist outs and this became my staple style along with the infamous flexi rod set. Then in February 2012, I did the “BIG CHOP.” I was traveling to Hawaii for my best friend’s wedding in April and had no idea what I was going to do to my hair because of the two different textures. I wanted to get the chance to experiment with my hair prior to traveling. I went to Kauai,Hawaii as a curly girl with a new look and feeling so free…best hair decision I ever made!
What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
What makes me love my curls and coils is that it refreshing to be ME and not look like everyone else. [I’m not knocking anyone with straight hair] I love walking into a room and reading those silent expressions on everyone’s face. This is what the big guy upstairs gave me and wearing my hair naturally is my way of saying, “Thanks G!” Plus, as I have stated before this is super easy for me and I like easy. I do like that I can blow dry my hair it if I want…but this is not anything I’m interested in. I had a job interview last month and everyone said I should wear my hair straight…well I did and as soon as I got home I washed my hair immediately because I missed my curls. I AM CURLY GIRL, HEAR ME ROAR!!

-Please note for future interviews my hair will be in a bun!

Hi opplanner, I'm glad you loved your UFD results!! In my opinion it is a great product. I have to come the understanding that the Eco gels just do NOT like me (lol). I cannot get multiple days out of my wash and go's with this gel. I can only get one day and that is NOT cool. I am trying some new products that I will review on my youtube channel. Stay tuned.
Lesley,
I just tried UFD Curl Magic based on your comments above and got
incredible results! Next to EcoStyler, is one of my favorite curl
defining products! It is pricey, but worth it!
Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Lesley!
:o) thank you
thank you!
Thanks
Thanks!
I totally agree with you on the pump! I LOVE THE PUMP ACTION ON UFD! Yeah, I wish I lived in TX so I could just go to the salon and pick it up in stead of waiting.
Its by Wella called Nutmeg 7WV.
Awww! Thank you!
It was fun! The color is by Wella its called Nutmeg 7VW or I think its 7WV. But it is definetly called Nutmeg.
Thank you.
Hi ss,
I used a bit of my bff KCCC and it is similar to UFD. I am a fan of the pump on UFD. The trio of TN, coconut oil and UFD is cool in my hair and doesn't leave any residue. I prefer UFD but if I am in a bind the KCCC will do. I have never purchased it but just swabbed my hands in it at my bff's house lol.
Thank you.
Yes, that is a color in my hair. Its by Wella called Nutmeg 7VW.
Thanks Alicia! The color is by Wella its Nutmeg 7VW. Its the same color in all pics just different lighting. Its a bit faded now; but its a color reddish brown.
Hi Lizzy, I will put my disclaimer out there that UFD is a tad on the expansive side once that shipping and handling gets added in the price. But I do LOVE IT!!
UFD is the TRUTH!! I think I want to give the Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha a try. I'm all for the pump on a bottle.
Thank you! I forgot to make my 6 month CG anniversary so I will definitely make one for my 7th month.
Thank you. Yes, the Curl Stimulator…I just always thought it was called Curly Magic lol. This gel does reallly well for me hair.
Thank you! I was fortunate enough to be blessed with a close friend who is a stylist and she cut my hair because I got too scissor happy one afternoon lol.
Nice curls and I love the colour
I would like to cosign on the UFD Curl Magic!!! If you love KCCC, you will love UFD….I get very similar results, plus I like the pump bottle. The only con is that I have to order it online…I wish it was more available at other sites or locally.
I'm liking that hair color!
Love the hair color!!!
Beautiful hair!
Nice curls, Lesley! Werrrrk!!
Great article, thanks so much for sharing and your is ridiculously awesome. 🙂
I love your hair color. What color do you have in your hair?
Absolutely lovely hair Lesley! and your personality shows through as well as you talk about your hair. Thank you for sharing your story!!!
Lesley, your hair and haircut are gorgeous!
The UDF ingredients look just like KCCC – I also note that you use TN and oil with the UFD – How is that possible! I am too afraid to try others + oils with KCCC.
Have you used KCCC? How does it compare to UFD?
Thanks!
Your curls do look amazing!
I just HAVE to know if you color your hair.
Beautiful hair! What color is that? In the first two pics your color is poppin!!
Beautiful hair!! I've never tried Uncle Funkys Daughter products. I think I may give them a try.
Thanks for the incredible story. I too use TN as a leave in condish love it. Your curls are popping UFD must be the a great product.
Love her hair and her youtube! I was doing the CG method for a while and I loved seeing her progress.
Beautiful hair! Do you use Uncle Funky's Daughter- Curl Magic – Curl Stimulator? I was looking on the site and that's the only gel like product I could find. Thanks for your story!
