Twist-Out with Clip-In Extensions: Yea or Nay?
by Shelli of HairScapades
For whatever reason … I was thinking about
curly bangs today. But, I don’t want to cut my own hair. So, I started
googling to see if I could find curly faux bangs (I have a faux straight
bang already). In my hunt, I came across this video of a young lady
demonstrating how she “pumps up” her twist-out
with clip-in extensions!

You know, I don’t think I would have ever
thought of this! I actually think that it’s pretty clever! Now, for
those of you with gorgeously thick manes, I know this one isn’t for you.
But, for all my fellow fine-haired kinky, coily, curlies out there,
what do you think?!?

*******************************************
Would you wear
kinky/coily/curly/wavy clip-in extensions to give you a more luscious
WnG, twist or braid-out? What about for a special occasion only:)?!?
CN Says:
It’s weird, I’ve actually thought about this.  Like, the idea ran through my brain one night as I was Googling, ‘get thick quick’, and I was like, ‘hmmm, that could actually work’.  Fake it ’til you make it boo-boo… right? But I thought better of it ’cause I’m that girl who furiously rubs her eyes AFTER the eye makeup has been meticulously applied (extra unmindful) and I can totally see my forgetful self fluffing the hell out of my hair, dislodging said clip-in extension, in a public forum.
So yeah, no.
Plus, I’d be all extra self-conscious, worried that the ish don’t match, with Will Smith looped in my head *singing*, ‘stuck in a basement, sitting on a tricycle, girl gettin on my
nerves……going outta my mind, I thought she was fine, don’t know if
her body is hers.
BUT in theory… genius idea!

    Me too!

  • Jessica Coletrain says:

I haven't tried it, but I actually considered it over and over. Got the idea from an old Blackonyx77 vid.

LMBO @CurlyNikki:disqus i thought i was the only one who memorized that song!!!

  • hairscapades says:

LOL!! That is so funny!! Hope that they work out well for you!! Please share a pic if you can/remember! I responded to this thread the other day, but I had links, so it's pending approval from Nikki. But, I said there that I probably wouldn't wear them on a day-to-day basis, but I might for a special occasion with pictures:)!!

But Brittney Davis … I totally could see myself feeling the same!! I like my hair, but I always want it bigger, thicker (it used to be denser in certain areas, I'm certain) … so I could see myself bemoaning the loss of volume too!!

  • SavanahRae says:

Seems like a yay to me if you can get it to blend well.

  • Angela B. says:

Great idea, but my hair is already really thick. I would consider doing this to add length.

CutiepieCALI, I think you have to look for a pattern that will match your hair. Only you know what your curls look like. But, if you have 3c/4a hair, I found this site with these natural looking clip-ins when I was looking for a lead pic for the post:
    http://myhaircouture.com/item_60/Caribbean-Curl-Clip-In-Extensions.htm
They also had these clip-ins that might work for looser curls:http://myhaircouture.com/item_61/Cashmere-Curl-Clip-In-Extensions.htm

Nik, you are hilarious!! And I so enjoyed reading everyone's responses!!! I thought that there would be a lot of "Nays," so I thought that it was kind of cool that the response was really more like half and half! As I commented on the post on my site, I might wear them for a special occasion where I really wanted to pump up the volume …. probably something where I expect to have photos and really want to go for a super fierce diva look. But, for the day to day, don't see myself doing it. And, I'm definitely too lazy to make my own!!! LOL!! I'd need to find pre-fabricated clip-ins that REALLY matched my texture and for a great price! The clip-ins I provided in the link are approx. $100!!!! Yeah, it's not THAT serious to me! LOL!!!

I would like to do this since I'm transitioning for the long haul (16 months post now). Any recs for hair? A straight haired natural in my class does this when her hair is not pressed because her curls are not so uniform anymore.

  • Gwenn4ya says:

Smart idea indeed, but I couldn't do it. I won't knock it though. It could really work if you wanted to achieve volume quick. For some reason, weave itches me to death and makes me sweat even in the dead of winter. I'm sure there are divas out there that could rock it and make it fabulous!

  • Davina916 says:

Not now. I probaly would've in my early natural days.

  • Lantoinette says:

I def like it. My hair is thin in the crown area so I would sooo rock this.

  • bbsinclair says:

You can buy tracks of kinky straight hair or kinky curly to make the clip ins match your texture. You can get it cheap on sites like alibaba. That way you dont have to worry about matching. For those who worry about the dreaded "fall-out" you can sew a corn row or two into the BOTTOM of your hair. That way you have a solid base for clipping that won't slip. You can still wear your own hair out without the clips for a rest because your hair will cover the braids.

  • Derika says:

Love the idea but not for my hair. My hair is super thick already. I think it'd look great on you, Nikki. Btw you are so silly with the Fresh Prince reference. Lmbo! 🙂

  • Kudos says:

Just when I was doing SO well staying away from the BSS…smh…*where is that Sally's card*

  • Megan M. says:

Wow never seen this before that is a smart idea!

  • Jada07 says:

I used clip ins all the time when i was relaxed. Never had any problem with them "accidentally" coming out. Nikki, you could definitely do it cause you would only need one or two wefts. I might need to revisit this as a styling option…

  • Yoruba says:

I have a *thing* about wearing false hair. I wouldn't do it. I've only done with synthetic braid extentions (think brandy back in the day or poetic justice) and it's just not becoming on me. But my hair is pretty thick. Ask me again if I experience real thinning or hair loss and I might have a different answer for ya!

  • Safaracurls says:

OMG Why did I spend all yesterday searching you tube for this exact topic and did not come across this video. HairScapades you are in my head! I got this bright idea on Sunday to make fine hair fuller with curly extension clip ins. My husband likes full big hair and we have a wedding to go to this coming weekend. So…. I promptly went to the BSS on Monday to find curly clip ins. The very informative owner said they only have straight hair and I would have to make my own. For $20 I said what the heck! go for it!!! I made the clip ins with help of a youtube video and put my hair in twists. Later on I will try them out to see if they will fly for the wedding. I'm not a fan of weaves, but clip-ins might work for my fine hair in the back. I hope it comes out good so it can be my go to for special occasions. Like Nikki I am extra self-conscious that it might not look natural or that it will come out.

  • Bianca Grogan says:

I thought about doing this when I do my twist outs, but I think my hair is too thick. www.shopperstherapy.blogspot.com

  • Veronica White says:

It looks really good on her; people fear clip-in's but honestly they stay in well. I used to use them when my hair was relaxed. Now that i'm natural, I'm impatient, someone would have to make them for me lol.

  • Pecancurls says:

Can't see the youtube link until I get home tonight, however, speaking as a "scalpy twist out" sister, I would try this in a heart beat if I could get it to look right.

  • www.lifestylebyky,com says:

That looks so good. It makes your hair look amazingly full. I love it

  • Brittney Davis says:

This seems like such a good idea, but I feel like the second I take out those clip-ins, I would be so dissatisfied with my actual hair that I would feel the need to wear them every time I wear my hair down. It's hard for me to go from thin hair to thick hair and then get used to thin hair again.

Yeah Why not! I think it's genius and fun for a girls night out! You guys should go to kinkycurlyaccents.com
Super Cute! I got two packs

  • Asia Tilaya says:

i use the str8 hair clip ins for when i'm blown out they are really secure for those who are wondering. but i like this, very cute!

  • beth says:

I saw something similar but it was a natural that used colored kinky weave to add highlights. She cut small pieces of the weave and sewed some clips onto them. It looked good and pretty realistic from her pics. I thought it was genius! I plan to experiment with colored extensions because I am too scared to dye my own hair. Has anyone tried this before?

  • meetfee says:

where do you get these small clip ins! my hair is short and fine. they would be perfect!

  • Mitzi Greene says:

it is a great idea for those that need it. Do what makes you happy.

  • nakida says:

I need that YouTube link to see it. If its cute like you say, yes I would rock it!!! Also love that its temporary, when I do get weaves its always sew-ins, you spend do much money you gotta keep them in.

  • CurlyNikki says:

Thanks Shannon! That bun… that bun… it made me feel like such a diva! ha! It was so dramatic, lol. Thanks chica!

  • Shannon says:

I have thought about it. Not clips ins, which might be a good idea, but just getting some extensions for fullness. My hair is super fine and I am not getting any volume right now. I might get a hair cut and see if that helps, but i will think about the clip ins because the only other hairstyle I want to achieve is that big, amazing bun you were rocking the other night, Nikki! Can't wait for my hair to grow out more.

  • DeAndra says:

    Yea for me! Why not!

  • Ashley Nicole Robinson says:

LMAO at the Fresh Prince earthquake episode reference! I would have the same issue about mistakenly pulling them out in public…not a good look!
