On the Couch with Michelle Williams (Updates!)

Re-posted from 2012!

Hola Chicas!

Michelle popped in and saw your comments and took to twitter to set the record straight. Her interview with Angela was more about empowerment and catching us up on her successful career… but of course y’all wanted the hair deets, so here ya go!

She told me–

“Some of the readers were disappointed that I didn’t discuss my hair routine! On my episode of Styled By June…all of that was my real hair….we shampooed, blow-dried and added clip in pieces for the makeover look.

When I’m not working I like to shampoo and air dry my hair and go. OR I diffuse my hair and take a small barrel iron to define unruly curls.

I like Mixed Chicks products and I also love Moroccan Oil line of products. They have amazing curl creams.

I’ve been relaxer free for about 11 years now. First it was a transition….then in 2008 I cut my hair short when I released my new album!

My hair was always long. Without weave it was down to the middle of my back. Where the bra band sits!”

Michelle in December 2011 with her own hair…..growing it out! Her hair was shampooed, diffused and curls defined w/ a small barrel iron.
“Nikki Mangrum of Freedom Salon in Chicago does my hair. She’s great!”

On the Couch with Michelle Williams (Updates!)
“My natural hair out with pieces added for a more full dramatic effect! I love Diana Ross so this is my Diana Ross look…”

1Love Blog: I really enjoyed your episode of ‘Styled by June’. It was great seeing you back in the spotlight. What projects are you working on and when can we expect another gospel album? [My favorite gospel song of yours is still ‘Heard a Word’ – Nothing like that still quiet voice].

Michelle: I can’t wait to do another gospel project! Gospel has always been my first love! I like ALL types of music, but I guess because of my upbringing it’s rooted and grounded in me! Everybody loves gospel music!

1LB: Speaking of ‘Styled by June’, I absolutely loved your “before” hair and the statement you made while in the salon chair – [granted, I’m partial to curly hair *smile*]. Why do you think there is such a misconception or drawback in the industry for those who choose to rock curly ‘dos?

M: Rocking your hair however you want makes you uniquely you. I really love my curly ‘fro, but then I love blow-drying it straight and a clip-in or two for a little variety. I wear my hair according to what I’m doing. We’ve allowed foolish magazines and beauty editors to tell us what beauty is. We really gotta let people know that natural is beautiful too!

1LB: I’ve seen your interactions with fans online [specifically with Kevin & Makael of The Skorpion Show] and you truly seem to be a genuinely down to earth person. With all of your success, how do you stay grounded and remain true to self?

M: I guess I’m able to stay grounded because I try not to bring anything that I do “home” with me. I leave all on the stage or wherever I perform, speak, etc. My family also keeps me grounded. I’m very close to my family. I have no other choice but to stay true to self because I have to live w/ME! LOL!

1LB: Of all that you’ve accomplished – Broadway, Stage Plays, Music – what are you most grateful and proud of?

M: I’m proud that I’ve been able to do what I love professionally for 13 years. Proud that I’ve been able to push and inspire others to live their dreams too!

On the Couch with Michelle Williams (Updates!)

1LB: Who is the WiseWoman behind Michelle Williams? [Anything you’d like to share with readers in regards to who the woman, Michelle, is behind the cameras, stage curtains and microphones. Anything you’d like to share on what keeps you motivated, what makes you tick, what keeps you focused].

M: I’ve recently made it a point to pay CLOSE attention to that inner voice. I used to allow the opinions of others to sway me, now I’m free from that. I only have people around me that believe! My love for music and the arts keep me going, because I remember a time when I couldn’t afford a Broadway ticket to see a fabulous play and to actually star in them is mind-blowing!

“I used to allow the opinions of others to sway me, now I’m free from that” <<<<—–THIS is everything! I’m truly inspired. Be sure to connect with Michelle on twitter!

I don't know about her acting chops but on the vH1 show, her hair did look like Madea's did 10 years ago. I am natural also, but I do wish June gave her a natural look instead of a straight look. Her girl Kelly is rocking the bomb natural look right now!!!

  • Queen Eye Cee says:

She looks gorgeous with her natural tresses, much more younger & attractive looking; she should hang-up the lace-front/weaves!!!

  • watkinsabob says:

I wonder if as a celeb its easier to be natural since you have to wear weaves/wigs all the time? i understand why because you cant be frying your hair everyday ya know!

  • Ayisha B says:

Love her hair and the play!!!

  • Anonymous says:

Her hair looks great!! That curl definition needs to come MY way

"Anonynous 2:54 and cosigner 3:35 Hi, Haters! Why do you need to see Bey's real hair? Of what consequence is it to you, I swear fo JESUS all you Beyonce haters are closet STANS clocking her every move. If you dont care for her AT ALL that's your business but the hate shows otherwise, #notsosecretlyobsessed. Get a life. And if YOU could READ you would see that CN posted an addendum from MICHELLE because she read the posts here wanting to know about her hair routine."

    …………..??????

    Wow….

I love the first pic (more so than the others). It's so cool to see celebrities be real for a change. No make up, no weaves (it doesn't actually say she wore clip ins in THAT particular pic) and just being real people. Sometimes we forget that celebrities are real people too and we judge them way too harshly. I can't imagine having people scrutinize my every move. It's kind of sad to see so many negative comments about her hair. I'm sure plenty of us have used a clip in or hair piece, or weave at some point in our natural journey. It doesn't make her or anyone else any less natural. There are some natural elitists floating around and it's really sad. We have enough of a struggle for acceptance of our natural hair without other naturals wagging their fingers at each other. Natural hair is like Ben and Jerry's ice cream, everyone has their own flavor and just because you have a favorite flavor doesn't make yours (or anyone else's) any better or worse.

  • marianela says:

Her hair is so beautiful OMG!!! May God bless her and her stunning locks. I think this article will drive me into using mixed chicks. I have heard so many good things but I have always been deterred by the price.

  • Anonymous says:

"all of that was my real hair" (except for the fake hair that was clipped in.) Why did they need to add in fake hair? I watched a clip on youtube and June (?) said it needed to be more "fashion forward". So natural hair isn't fashion forward enough? You need to add fake length to it for it to be fashion forward?

Michelle's always been pretty. You go girl!!

  • Anonymous says:

Her hair looks beautiful I loved michelle after i got her barbie doll instead of beyonce lol it probably is hers if youve ever used a curling iron / wand on dry moisturized curls it looks like that use a heat protectant grapeseed oil even though curling iron heat is very low usually

  • talybutterfly4 says:

I did not know that Michelle was all natural. Wayt to go! She looks very beautiful. God Bless.

  • Anonymous says:

    LuvLayci,
The article changed. The first version didn't have as much detail about her hair. Nikki added updates at the top.

  • Carla says:

Tell em Michelle! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your hair care routine although you should've felt pressured to.

Ladies, I thought the main purpose of this movement was to empower and uplift those for their hair choices?! I could care less whether or not you show your "real" hair or add clips. Seriously? It's time to get over that….

  • MrsDjRass says:

Rock on, Michelle. I like the original interview, but I also think it's cool that you added things about your hair. I don't know why some folks are so hateful about other people's hair.

To all the positive people out there who just love hair and want to share with others, thank you.

  • Layci says:

Why are people saying "they thought it was going to be about hair"? Clearly the whole first part of the article is about her hair, routine, product choice, etc. Read critically!

  • Anonymous says:

Glad to read the details on hair. 🙂 She looks great. Wishing her continued success.

  • T_Mac says:

Awesome!!! I was googling for natural hair pics of Michelle. Her hair is beautiful!

  • Pecancurls says:

Nik, great interview! Glad she shared some styling and hair care tips. Beautiful, classy lady. She looks great with the natural curls. The versatility of natural hair!

  • Anonymous says:

    @Anonymous 3:35 PM – Tell that!

  • Anonymous says:

I don't want to be rude here but did NO ONE actually READ? She said she's been natural 11 years…that the hair we saw was all hers minus a few clip ins…that she prefers to wash and go and she shared her favorite lines of products. She even said sometimes she diffuses and uses a curling iron to define her curls…but people are STILL asking questions she's already answered?! She's not a beauty guru, what do you want her to do? Bust out a camera and show you her routine in detail with time lapses, split screens and the whole nine? Like…what more do you want? LOL

  • Anonymous says:

Michelle is beautiful and seems friendly.I prefer her to Kelly and Bey if I'm honest. Atleast she tries to share most of her with us #show us your real hair Bey

@ anonymous 10:30 & 12:33 – You are absolutely right. You are entitled to your opinion. So you should have no problem in understanding that "the other anonymous posters" are entitled to their opinions too; and their opinions are that your post was rude and negative… What? They are not entitled to an opinion on your opinion? Let's not be hypocritical now. That is all.

  • MelMelBee says:

@CP….OMGosh did you see the latest pic of Solange's hair? (she was in a yellow dress)….FIERCE! I don't care if they added lion's fur to her head…she looked HAWT!

  • CP says:

Let's be nice ladies she's natural we're natural this is a natural blog we all know other naturals and even some of us wear weaves, sew-ins, wigs etc during our grow out process look at Solange..it doesn't make them any less fab. Good article!!

  • MelMelBee says:

OMGosh….Nik, you know you've arrived when freaking Michelle Williams comes to your blog and then responds to comments….HAWTNESS!!!

Anyway (since I know Michelle is reading…so excited…and giddy).

Michelle, I'm so glad on that episode of Styled by June that you didn't let them jack you up. From the way it was edited, I thought you had "stepped into the bad side". But I'm glad you stood your ground and that you made the comments about not bending to the industry's perception of beauty. You don't need June to style you…you betta WERK those skinny legs and big hair!

  • Anonymous says:

Hi Michelle, love your natural look!! Rock it more often, I did not like what June did on her show, you are perfect without the extensions.

  • Anonymous says:

@the other anonymous posters who have a problem with my comment about Michelle's acting not being great:
Last time I checked, everyone was entitled to their opinion whether it be negative or positive. Michelle is a terrible actress and I thought that was funny that your comment specifically mentioned her as being great. Did I attack her or tear her down? No, so get on with that nonsense.
I just said I thought it was funny and we saw the performance differently and that was that. There is no reason to get out of pocket and make assumptions about my character and my life because you disagree with the opinion that I'm entitled to especially when I didn't say anything remotely bad. Both of y'all can have a seat.
And for the record, I watched Michelle's performance from a neutral perspective. I don't stan for celebrities and I give credit where credit is due.

  • Unknown says:

Its nice to see people achieve the impossible and remain good people. I can only hope to do the same.
    NO scratch that.
    I WILL do the same!

  • Anonymous says:

Anon 10:30, there is never a reason to be rude. Obviously we were watching two different performances. I was watching from a perspective of support, and you were watching from a perspective of negativity. Don't let it suck the life out of you!

  • Anonymous says:

I have no clue…is that all Michelle's hair? I see in that article where she say's; She really loves her curly fro. But is she natural for real? Or does she wear a natural wig, pieces, etc.? I too thought we would get the deets on her hair! lol

  • DrChuck24 says:

I too thought that this was going to be about hair lol. But it was a great read. And yall need to watch Kevin and Makael on the Skorpion Show. HILARIOUS!

  • Anonymous says:

@ anon 10:30AM why is it that someone ALWAYS comes up with something negative to say???! She must be doing something right, she's been in the business for 13 years! What are you doing? And how many Celeb's do you know? I would bet EVERTHING that you couldn't even sit in the same room as Michelle! The joke is on you boo!!!LOL

  • Anonymous says:

I also watched the play on BET. Michelle did look beautiful!

  • Anonymous says:

The curls on "styled by June" was not her hair and it did make her look old. Natural hair is beautiful, but I dislike it when blogs, magazines, etc., go crazy over natural-looking units, weaves, etc. as if it is a look for us naturals to aspire to.

  • Anonymous says:

LOL @ Michelle being a great actress. I guess we must've been watching two different performances.

  • Anonymous says:

I saw the play "What My Husband Doesn't Know" on BET this past weekend. It was interesting. lol! Michelle looked beautiful and is a great actress. She seems like a sweet girl and I hope she continues to be blessed!

  • Anonymous says:

    I love Michelle!

  • Anonymous says:

Hum well ok,not feeling this but hey I learned something new. So thanks for the information.

  • Anonymous says:

Aww shucks! Was really hoping for some of the "scoop" on her tresses! i.e routine, product choice, maintenance, self styling or professional, how long she's been natural, etc. 🙁

Well, thanks for updating us though! I know I have been wondering what she has been up to.
