The Multi-Pineapple for Short Hair

Think your hair is too short to pineapple? You thought wrong!

So yesterday, I was having hair talk with one of my girls on the hair board, and she was telling me how much she looooooves pineappling. Her hair is much longer than mine, and she’s my hair nemesis (jokingly, of course), so my response was, “Psssssssssh, I can’t make a ponytail, I can’t pineapple!” She was very encouraging and let me know that she couldn’t pineapple until she was about a year and a half or two years into her hair journey, and when I got there, I’d LOVE it.

But it got me to thinking…sure I can’t make a FULL ponytail, but I sure can get some bunches of my hair in a ponytail easily. So what did I do? I got off my couch and sauntered over to Rite Aid, and picked up a pack of Mini Scrunchies – these kind:

When I got home, I split my hair into five sections – two on top of my head (my hair is thick, so I didn’t want the scrunchie to be too tight and make dents in my hair), one in the back, and one on each side. I pretty much ended up looking like one of the Snorks. Observe, my friends…

I placed my satin bonnet over my Snorktails, and went to bed. In the morning, I took them all out (sorry, no pic). Now, the curls were intact, but obviously needed to be fluffed back out and grouped together. So, I took my spray mix of AV gel (Lily of the Desert kind, it’s more watery than Fruit of the Earth), a little bit of DevaCurl Set it Free, and rose water. Then, I shook it out. My hair looked good!!! Here’s the back –

However, as my hair dried, it felt a wee bit crunchy (I’m guessing due to the AV gel). So, I scrunched in some Curl Junkie Smoothing Lotion and fluffed it out some. Here is a pic of the finished results –

Verdict? I love this! I haven’t tried to detangle my hair, but I feel like it’s going to be less tangled because my hair didn’t get to smoosh all the way to my scalp, my hair is stretched some, and it was so easy to refresh! I think we’ve got a winner, girls!

Do you pineapple? Pigtails? How do you maintain your curls at night? Sound off!

My hair is super short, think Halle Berry. I've started transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. How can I preserve my curls at night? It's way too short for any pineapples…

Oh how I love this site! I am going to try this tonight. I usually re-twist my hair every night. This is going to save me so much time! This is a great post!

OMG, I tried this last night and I LOVE it. I am so going to be using this all the time now. I could never get a twist out to last for more than a day, would have to re-twist every night. But my hair looks as good as it did yesterday with day one hair. I should definitely be able to stretch my twist outs to 4 days with this. Thank God for Curly Nikki and all my fellow naturals!

  • DMB says:

hey, i thought I was the only one who did this! It sure does help keep the curl for us shorter curlies, good work!

  • Queenofthe4s says:

Last night I used this mini-pinapple method to style my hair after a cowash. Drying in the sections stretches the roots for more elongation and my hair was nearly dry by morning. I'm going to *love* this for the winter.

I will post pics on my blog soon.

Just wanted to let you guys know of some interesting news that I saw while visiting on LHCF concerning "Miss Jessie's Products: Buy One Get One FREE! (Nov 26 – Dec 31)".

Undoubtedly this is what I saw posted from one of the women I didn't know that their able to do this.

Isn't there a list somewhere of their retail locations that DO participate in the BOGO? I refuse to pay all that money for shipping. I really like the baby buttercreme and curly pudding, and I would get them if I can find them offline.

I went to 3 locations in the Baltimore area and they did not honor the BOGO. I made a post on Miss Jessie's FB page and the called the retailer and the are now honoring the promotion.

go to Miss Jessie's Original and look under location and you should see all the vendors that are supposed to participate in the promotion.

I am in the DMV too and I had a location NOT honoring the BOGO. I explained to them that they stated on the website that ALL retailers should honor this sale. The BSS was however offering 20% off storewide. I chose not to purchase and went to another BSS that I KNEW was honoring the sale.

I went into the store today and they had a sign with BOGO. They said "oh yeaaaah that was you who called, we called the company to verify". So, I got the BOGO AND 20% off. I ended up paying $31.00 for 2 16 oz containers of Stretch Silkening Creme AND $38.00 for 2 Curly Puddings (from the other BSS in Alexandria).

Wooooot I LOVE THIS SALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I refused to order online and pay the MINIMUM $12.+ shipping. Ridiculous!

Hi. I LOVE your hair color. I see that you said that you did Henna. Did you use Jamila or another brand? I really want to try it but a little nervous. My hair probably won't be red because I do not have highlights. I have some permanent red color in my hair that I have been trying to come out, but it is more like a dark burgandy. Can you help?

  • MommieDearest says:

I have thick 4b hair and I sometimes use this method to preserve my twistouts. I put my hair in 2 pineapples, one on the very top and one in the back. My twistouts last 3-4 days.

  • SaBrina says:

I've tried this twice before and my hair comes out decent looking. Though I use the Goody ouchless bands in brown on my hair. But they still do get the flat look even with the satin bonnet on the hair, but I just fluff and go. Though I have to be careful of the tangles on my hair, because I would still consider an WNG style for me. So I can't do this style everyday, I think personally this is better for someone with a looser texture of curl unlike my 4b/c hair.

  • Anonymous says:

@luvmylocs – My hair is super thick, so after I have manipulated it and let the style "set," it's very easy to hold the style. In the morning, if my hair won't fall all the way back down, I spritz lightly with a leave-in conditioner (hair is not wet but slightly damp). I imagine I won't have this issue as much when my hair is longer b/c there will be less tension on the pineapples.

  • Anonymous says:

I thought i was the only 1 that did this!!! i actually felt weird abut it…but this has given 10 day hair!!…..that looks grrreat

  • luvmylocs says:

super cute! love the color. for some reason my hair doesn't juse "fall" when i take it down from ponytails or puffs. it just sort of sticks out – think pippylongstocky. why do you think that is?? too dry? my texture?

  • suqiit says:

I've been doing this for months! I had no idea anyone else was doing it. I usually have about 5 sections. It works on wash n go's, twist outs and coil outs great.

  • GGmadeit says:

I did a WnG just to try this out! Lol! Someone suggested you to me just yesterday! I love it and your hair is gorgeous! I subscribed to your blog too!

  • Anonymous says:

Love the hair color..might color my hair after I reach my hair goal

  • Lori says:

This works as does her 3-horned snorktails (look for the vid on her blog, lol). I did it this week after a WNG with just Mixed Chicks LI and it has given me 5 day hair that looks almost better than day 2 (def. better than day 1). It's stretched, but the curls remain intact with little to no frizz.

  • Anonymous says:

I've been doing 5 buns on my hair (about the same length as the author) for a month and am able to get a wash 'n go to last 4-5 days. I pull the side buns up higher so I can sleep on the sides. In the morning I take each bun down and refresh with aloe vera juice/H20 spray, then use a small amount of moisturizer (Shea moisture smoothie at this time), then a small amount of jojoba oil to seal. I sometimes have to wet a frizzier section with water and smooth, but these are small areas. I love it! I get a stretched WNG that doesn't shrink from wetting it everyday.

  • SPstyles says:

you're making me wanna color my hair and i just chopped all my color off!!!! ahhh!!! lol
    Your hair is gorgeous!

  • Anonymous says:

Ladies, I did this last week and it worked like a charm. I had a twist-out and didn't feel like retwisting, so i put my hair in 5 pineapples and slept in a satin bonnet. When I woke up the next morning, I just shook my head and fluffed my curls and I was good to go. This will definitely save me some time at night.

  • Anonymous says:

I saw this on EllePixie's youtube channel. And it gave me 3 to 4 days on a Wash n' Go. Her channel is informative and hilarious.

  • Kristen says:

Very Cute!!! And I love the color. Is that dye or henna???? That's kinda the color I am hoping to get from my henna when it gets here (of course I am not expecting it to be that much color but at least that tint) :o)

  • Anonymous says:

Hey guys, it's EllePixie! Thanks for all the kind words. The pineapple I did is on a wash and go, and my hair color is henna on lightened hair. For me, pineappling has helped keep my hair from smashing against my scalp at night, which messes up my curls and also tangles my hair. So much better than a satin bonnet!

My 11 month nappiversary was on November 26th, so I'm almost to my one year! 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

Your color and curls are gorgeous!! Is that a "boxed" color or henna on lightened hair? It somewhat looks the color of henna on my grey hair (I have a lot and love the way it looks like red highlights). Really, really pretty.

  • Aja says:

I love your hair! I really have no use for this video yet though, I'm only 1 month post BC. LOL.

How long have you been natural? What color is that in your hair? I love how red it is.

  • Anonymous says:

My hair is very short — about 3.5 in. — so I sleep with a satin bonnet and let my curls get smooshed. Then I finger coil in the morning with Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey. I can do this for 3 days of nice curls. Sometimes I stretch it to 4 days but probably shouldn't…lol.

  • Blakbutterfli says:

Sorry – what is pineapple-ing and how does it help your hair?? I don't think my hair is long enough for this and it's definitely not thick, so would it work for me?

  • Anonymous says:

This is too smart and your hair is too cute! Thanks!

  • Unknown says:

    Genius!

  • iri9109 says:

yall gotta try this! its a hairsaver lol

  • Doc says:

    CUTE!!!!

  • Nitia715 says:

Such a good idea! While my hair is long enough to do a single pineapple, it is extremely thick so I think multi pineapples would work much better. I love your style and color!

  • Anonymous says:

Great idea!! I LOVE your color.

  • kulem says:

I love this, was this done on a wash-n-go? I've been doing wash-n-go's and I wear them 2 days in a row. The thing that I hate is that on the second day my hair is smashed flat from sleep. I'll have to try this…

  • Anonymous says:

Genius!!! lol I never thought of that!

  • Unknown says:

I don't pineapple, because my hair is also too short to do so. But maybe I'll try it out with the mini-pigtails one of these days.

I just want to say, your hair color is fantastic! For real, you're making me me want to run out and get a box of red.

  • Nikki Renee says:

I can't wait for my hair to grow this length!!

  • Anonymous says:

You ladies at this site are so creative and the information is always on point. Thank you Curly Nikki and others for all your information. I am two years natural and never thought to "pineapple" in sections. I am sure the section Pineapple will give me second day hair/curls. I can't wait to try this. Again thanks!!!

  • Anonymous says:

I pineapple my crown with a Goody Ouchless barrette and set the edges and nape on satin covered foam rollers.

  • DreamchaZer says:

LOOKS GOOD!! Never thought about doing a pineapple on my hair, due to the length. Was this to preserve a twistout?
