You don’t always have to buy fancy, big name hair products for your hair. Sometimes the best products are actually very simple and found in your local Whole Foods store. What are these simple hair products? Well they’re natural oils. I’m a natural haired woman and know first-hand that natural oils are amazing for hair. They work wonders on my hair. And I’ve been using natural oils for years to make my hair softer, shinier, and even stronger. Basically hair needs oil. So be sure to check out these 7 fabulous natural oils for natural hair.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is particularly great for natural hair. It’s loaded with nutrients, amino acids, essential fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, B, D, and E. And it’s excellent for moisturizing, deep conditioning, improving hair strength, strengthening hair, and boosting shine.

Castor Oil
Castor oil thickens hair, promotes hair growth, prevents thinning, moisturizes, helps reduce split ends, helps to tame frizz, and prevents scalp infections.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is great for preventing dandruff, promoting hair growth, moisturizing, strengthening hair, thickening hair, and preventing damage.
Olive Oil (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)
I LOVE using olive oil. And olive oil, which is also referred to as the “godmother of hair oil,” is great for moisturizing, deep conditioning, improving hair strength, eliminating dandruff, and also has powerful antioxidants that can help fight hair loss.
Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil is great for stimulating hair follicles for hair growth, preventing hair loss and greying, preventing dandruff, strengthening hair, and boosting shine.
Safflower Oil
Safflower oil protects hair, nourishes hair follicles, moisturizes, and stimulates blood circulation to promote hair growth and thickness. And it is extremely beneficial for natural as well as dry chemically treated hair.
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil works great as a “sealant.” This means that it “locks-in” moisture. Sweet almond oil also nourishes hair, smoothes hair cuticles to control shedding, promotes hair growth and thickness, prevents hair loss, and boosts shine.

i use coconut oil on my hair at night. I usually section the hair then rewet it and apply coconut oil. I twist each strand and untwist them for a twist out. Its heat free and my hair has become really thick and long. There are so many great oils to use for the hair. Gods great gift
What about ARGAN OIL!? It's everywhere! It should be on here, argan
oil is not greasy and it's really light, I even read that it has more benefits than all the others. It smoothes hair down
and makes it soft and healthy while preventing damage and split ends. You just
put some on on damp hair after a shower and style your hair as usual. Really
helps a lot 🙂 I'm using pro naturals moroccan argan oil, it has no silicones which is supposed to be better.
Hi there.I have always had long curly hair (male) all my life. I had a sort of fungal ringworm or some infection in late 2010. I decided to shave my head and let the sun heal me (2010 nz summer). However, my hair did not grow back after I shave it of. Ive trimmed it 1000s of times but never shaved.
2 n so years later, im suffering from hair loss. No one in my family suffers from it. Im very depressed as a result as i really want my oold hair back
My symptons are:
– Hair did not fully grow back
-extremely brittle,dry dead hair 24/7
– has no strength( if the wind blows , my hair stays in the same state as it was blown, so if it goes up,it stays up)
-my roots are very weak i therefore presume as it falls out so easily in the shower, during exercise ….. and it feels stingy at the roots
Ive read every single resource on the essential oils and carrier oils
Wat ive learned;
-hair supplement that maybe useful
-the oils
– hair diet etc http://www.livestrong.com/article/117488-treat-hair-loss-essential-oils/

Avocado or avocado oil??
I use Organix Moroccan Argan Oil and my hair just drinks it up. I JUST wen natural on the 13th of July though.
Is this a leave in or should I rinse out
For a hot oil treatment. Warm your oils and saturate your hair. Put on a shower cap and sit in the sun for 15-30 min. Works Great! Also you can apply oils to hair and go to sleep just put a towel over your pillow. I like coconut or almond oil, it smells heavenly. Sweet dreams
Henna leaf non colouring !!!
Aaaannnnnndddd you have Amla powder ! Which is also a natural conditioner ! Mix it with Henna powder put it on dry hair, leave it for 15-3o mins then rinse with lukewarm water then Shampoo after 3 hrs !
Also, use Henna powder non colouring as a conditionner ! Make a hair mask of the following : oils (whichever you like) egg yolk, avocado pureed, olive oil, dead sea mud, and some henna powder, lime juice (half)
But only use 100% natural oils ! For Argan use ONLY undiluted, non treated, SMELLY, no other oil added oil ! If there's no smell, don't buy ! It costs but when want quality, that's the price !
Obliphica oil
Peppermint
Rosemary
Argan Oil
Castor oil
Carrot seed oil
Lavender oil
Tea Tree oil
Garlic Oil
Onion oil
Sweet Almond oil
Grapeseed oil
Grapeseed oil! Oh my goodness. I cannot believe it isn't listen! That stuff is AMAZING. Not only is it a great heat protectant but it makes my hair soo soft and shiny.
Hi gals, I use coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil and avocado oil in equal quantities. Heat the mixture of the above oils and apply it over night. It works !!! Hair is silky smooth and manageable. Also the thickness of the hair increases eventually. 🙂
Thanks for the info! Argan oil is great for your hair, I use Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan Oil and my hair is looking shiny, smooth and healthy 🙂
I was about to purchase the Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil because it appeared to be all natural. After looking at the ingredients it has Tocopheryl Acetate which is in a lot of products, unfortunately its been known to cause cancer. http://www.truthinaging.com/ingredients/tocopheryl-acetate
I am 5months post the big chop, I have 3c hair, it very dry, I want to now begin using only natural oils on my hair. Is there someone who can help me with choosing oils that work, I want my hair to shine, be moisturized, and heathly…But to grow, grow, GROW..lol anyone out there with suggestions.
I use peppermint, tea tree, EVCO, avocado, EVOO, and castor oils. I use these oils for various reasons such as, shampooing, deep conditioning, and pre-pooing. I have found that avocado oil works well for brittleness.
I have been using argan oil on my hair for the last three months and it is much softer, shinier and dont break like it used to. I used to use moroccanoil but then found out it had chemicals in it which i dont like. I now use one by mamanature.
I have been using safflower oil for about 1 month. I put a drop or two of 100% pure peppermint oil in a cup and then put about 2 tablespoons in the cup. As I twist my hair I dip the TIP of my finger in the cup and apply to the ends of my hair. The peppermint also stimulates the scalp.
Wow I have learnt so much thanks ladies, gonna add it to my research and keep going stay tuned..
I Use Coconut Oil And Olive Oil. It Leaves My Hair Shiny And Super Moisterized But It Doesn't Grow :/
In another post by CN she talks about using castor oil and argan oil. She suggested a 1:1 mix. I too am confused still though about how and when to apply….daily, weekly, monthly? Dry hair, pre po, post po, deep conditioner, with heat, without heat? HELP!!!! LOL! Proper guidance please! 😉
Thanks! XOXO
Vitamin E oil is also great for Natural hair to promote growth and a healthy appearance. I mix it with Jojoba Oil and Coconut Oil.
I'm reading this site and think it's great but I'm confused about the amounts of each oil to use. Is it just trial and error? Is there a basic "starting point" that can be altered later? Please help.
First I would like to say I love this site. I've been natural for almost a year but I didn't know what to do with my hair styling wise (I wore full tracks) or how to take care of it, NOW I DO and still learning…..however I was posting today because I was at work and I just bought all these great "food" ingredients for my hair(I work at wally world). I just discovered that we sell coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and safflower oil(on the baking goods aisle by the oils). All in pretty great sizes for the price especially compared to the sizes and prices I was planning on paying from ordering online. Hope this helps someone.
Can I mix olive oil, sweet almond oil (as carriers) with some tea tree, rosemary and lavender for hair application. I have dandruff and scalp has become very dry. This combo felt good, but want to check. Would, of course, dilute essential oils appropriately.
I love using coconut/olive oil mixed together, both are amazing after washing your hair to replenish moisture back into your scalp and hair and when your hair is feeling extra dry. I also love grapeseed oil, which is great for hair growth and a light moisturizer!
I have an oil mix of coconut, olive, almond, grapeseed and tea tree. I love it and I also use it on my skin. I have eczema and sebhorric dermatitis and these oils really help me out a lot. My hair really responds to coconut oil. People are so nervous about natural oils but this is what people used before all these chemicals were invented. Just make sure you're not allergic to them. If you're allergic to the food version you'll most def be allergic to the oil version.
I have just recently did the big chop this past New Year's Eve so not quite post 1 month yet, however I am trying to determine which oils is best for my hair, I understand all the various oils that many of you use, my question is should I use these oils while my hair is wet and leave it in? or Should I put them on when it is dry? Do I rinse it out ? or What seems to work best? Now I'm doing co wash with a leave in, but I have used olive oil with a deep conditioner, but what about when I'm not deep conditioning? what should i do with the oils?
I like to use tea tree oil because of my scalp condition. I'm in transition.
I am trying to find oils for my hair, I have been natural for a couple years now but have yet to find any products that work. I have decided to try natural products but am unsure how to use them.Do I just apply these oils directly to my hair? What is the best way to use them?
I'm in the process of transitioning from permed to natural, I just put in braids a week ago. My question is what oil can I use with braids still in to keep my hair from breaking and to keep my scalp moisturized. I have dry scalp
Are sweet almond oil and almond oil different?
Hi I want to mix these oil in my weekly deep hot oils treatments,
Olive oil,Grapeseed,Sweet Almond,Coconut oil,Avocado oil, and Rosemary, I dont know about the results i looking for ideas and
If you had tried them before tell me how did it worked for yall.
The proper way to moisture/seal is to mist hair with water by small sections, apply your moisturizer (oils/butters/etc) to hair shaft with special attention to the ends of your hair (about and inch or so from the bottom). When you do this properly, you will notice AMAZING results and so will everyone else!
I love to use olive oil, castor oil, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and tea tree oil.
I just started mixing EVOO, avocado and almond oils for my hair treatment and so far so good! They leave my hair so soft and the smell is soooo good!!!! I heard about the jojoba and emu oils but they're kinda hard to find in my country… and plus that! I always buy shampoos and conditioners with shea butter… I've been growing my hair out from a pixie cut (10 months yaaay!) and my ends are great! and my hair is CollarBoneLenght right now (considering I had to trim my hair twice to get rid of the mullet) and I'm taking skin, hair and nail supplement that way my hair is gonna get what it needs from the inside 🙂 Sooo if any of you have something to add I'm open to suggestions!
♥JB
I have a mix of EVCO, EVOO, Safflower, Jojoba, Sweet almond, & Grapeseed oils that I use daily on my hair and body. I really would like to use Castor oil but my budget won't allow me to buy it from WF so I'm wondering would the Castor oil from the drugstore (Walgreens, CVS, etc.) work on my hair??? Suggestions please…
L
I just recently brought coconut oil and rosemary and I haven't a clue how to apply them. Do I just put it directly on the hair and scalp or mix it with something. Help please!
how often to add to these oils to your transitioning new growth and scalp? I am 2 months post relaxer and been trying to find out what products work to soften my new growth. If in flexi rod style, how often should I moisturize my scalp/hair? If I can feel the moisture in my hair/scalp when touch…does this mean it's moisturized enough? What's the moisturize/seal order?
I make a hair mositurizer using: alovera gel, coconut oil, castor oil, grape seed oil, EVOO, organic honey, rosemary oil, peppermint oil and clary sage oil added to distilled water. LOVE IT!
I've use all these that people have mentioned PLUS Emu Oil — look it up it's awesome!!
I've tried EVOO on the ends of my hair as a sealant. Later that day, my hair was frizzy, my scalp was dry and my hair was greasy.
I wasn't happy with the outcome, but since I bought the Olive Oil for my hair, I'm not giving up. Perhaps as a hot oil treatment?
Is it effective to use jojoba oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and castor oil at the same time. What's the best method on how to use the oils I mentioned.
Can I mix Jojoba oil with coconut oil, and castor oil.
jojoba oil,coconut oil,castor oil,tea tree oil
Do you put these oils on your hair wet or dry? I tried dry once and didn't like it. It didn't do anything for my curl except frizz them out & mess up my curl pattern.
I ues jojoba oil a lot…I also tried olive oil…but I found that my hair doesnt really like oils by themselves, it reacts better when they are mixed in with creams…
Grape seed Oil!!!
Can i mix them all and use them at once?
How soon can I see hair growth if so?
🙂

I love, love, love almond oil and jojoba oil. I use olive oil and castor oil regularly.
My fave oils are coconut oil and tea tree oil. I use them in my pre-shampoo hot oil treatment.
I love jojoba oil. It is a wonderful sealant and you can buy it at Trader Joes!
@anon 5/11/2011 5:43 PM: you can get a number of the oils mentioned here at Whole Foods. You can also find most at an Indian and/or carribean grocery store. If none of these stores are around you, you can try ordering them online.
amla oil!
what kind of castor oil do you curlies use?
@ Anon 5:23. I live in a town without any markets to buy most of these oils so I have been getting them from Amazon. So you might just try searching online…
to answer the question… I LOVE coconut oil! It makes my hair super soft!
i love sesame oil for a deep condition and pre poo. and flax seed oil as my styling oil.
@That Girl…if you are allergic to nuts, please do not put nut oils on your skin. Many people who are allergic to nuts are sensitive to any kind of contact with them, and it is the oils that keeps many people with nut allergies out of Thai, Indian, and other restaurants that use crushed or ground nuts or butter. Also, there is the issue of sensitization, so you could at some point have a very severe reaction by exposing yourself to these doses. It is not worth it.
None of these oils is really that much better than the other, and if your hair is shedding for medical reasons, start with your primary care physician to find out if it is normal or related to hormones, in which case you'd see an endocrinologist, or related to skin, in which case you'd see a dermatologist, or related to something else that another specialist can treat.
Be really careful about internet based remedies to health problems, and don't risk your health b/c of some voodoo hair treatment.
Now, I'm allergic to almonds, but I have really bad shedding problems, and the prospect of me using Sweet Almond Oil is really exciting.
Do you think my allergy to almonds will affect the way my hair responds to the oil?
@Terez. I actually use emu oil in my herbal scalp oil. I forgot to include it in my staples. It is supposed to help with eczema and other skin disorders, so that's the reason I had bought it – I tend to have eczema but it has been under control for some time now.
My staples: sesame, coconut, sweet almond, grape seed, neem, castor oils.
I pre-poo with coconut oil only an I add it to my leave-in conditioner after washing my hair. I add the others to my herbal hair oil for use on my scalp and to my shea butter mix for use on my hair and body. I have recently started using Argan and sapote oils. The argan has not really wowed me but the sapote I think will be a staple in my scalp oil and in my shea butter mix. It is non greasy and oh so moisturizing and I also love it mixed with castor oil to seal my ends when air drying.
I actually don't use any natural oil on my hair right now because I have baby Sisterlocks.
However, I came across emu oil, and I haven't heard of many naturals using it. I read about a study with emu oil, where a doctor discovered that patients who used emu oil stimulated hair growth. In fact, 80 percent of sleeping hair follicles started growing.
Has anyone used emu oil?
love coconut oil!
sunflower oil. I don't really hear about a lot of people using it but it makes my hair sooooo soft!
where can i get theses oils? I dont know any markets where i live. all i know is walmart and some other big names. please comment!
As I read this, I wiped away the EVOO, Safflower & Coconut oil from my face and neck that's dripping from my hair. I just finished my hot oil treatment and decided to take a peek at "my sites" before I jump in the shower to complete my hair regi for the day.
LOVE my coconut oil like none other! I mainly use to seal my hair/ends. I hate using for treatments because the thought of washing it away makes me sad but sometimes I'll use just a tad bit of it. I keep meaning to try some castor oil near my edges that appears to be thinning on one side only. Hopefully, I'll get around to that. I used grapeseed oil for about a little over a month before I recognized that it was breaking me out and drying me out- *shrug* haven't a clue as to why though.
There is nothing better than that good ole EVOO. I use it for everything. Including to make a facial mask and body moisturizer. I also like coconut oil. I haven't tried just plain argan oil, but my hair responds very well to products with it. I also like grapeseed oil for adding moisture in between wash and gos and twist outs.
