Why is EVOO So Amazing?

Have you tried Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) in your hair regimen? If not, wait no longer! When used on the hair, extra virgin olive oil can nourish, condition and improve the strength and elasticity.

Due to it’s ability to penetrate the hair shaft, this rich moisturizing oil can reach the cortex of the hair, allowing the hair to feel conditioned, nourished, and healthy with each use.

Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidant vitamin E, vitamin A and helps heal dry flaky scalp, also known as dandruff.

How to Use Olive Oil in Your Natural Hair Regimen:

  1. Pre-Poo treatment – Add 2-4 tbsps of EVOO to your dry unwashed hair. Apply to the ends first. Use the rest in your scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap for 15-20mins (with or without heat). Wash and condition as usual.
  2. Hot Oil Treatment – Add 2 tbsps of EVOO to a applicator bottle. Place bottle in warm water to heat up. Test on wrist until desired temp is reached. Apply to the scalp and massage for 10-15 mins. The oil will help dandruff and dryness and the massage will promote growth.
  3. Leave-in – You can use a dab of EVOO over your leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture thus helping to retain a proper moisture balance.
  4. Mixed into your deep conditioner – Add 1-2 tbsps of EVOO to your desired deep conditioner for soft, conditioned, smooth hair. This is my favorite method!

CurlyNikki commenter Dana uses it as a pre-poo by mixing it with sweet almond oil and jojoba:

And commenter Yazzy has her own DIY EVOO Deep Conditioner. Just mix 1/4 cup of EVOO, 1/4 cup of honey and a 1/4 cup of conditioner.

Thanks for your help, great work here.

  • Latanya says:

I am an EVOO girl (although, I do prefer coconut oil more) and I use it as a sealant.

  • Jay says:

Try it with your deep conditioner. Use it as a hot oil treatment for 15 minutes (cover with shower cap). Then add your deep conditioner, leave in your hair for an 1/2 an hour to an hour with your shower cap on.

  • Dallas says:

I use 1 tbsp EVOO and 1 tbsp honey as a DC base, then add any combination of avocado, banana, mayo or yogurt, depending on what's in the pantry. Anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours seems to be the magic number (I did this as an overnight DC and my hair felt heavy and greasy), my hair feels so soft and luxurious afterwards and stays that way for quite a while – depending on the weather and how badly I treat it. Haven't tried EVOO in anything else though….but I don't use a spritzer (3b/3c hair…wonder if I should?)

  • Laura says:

EVOO is awesome. I use it on the weekends while I use Pro naturals moroccan argan oil during the weekdays (it's not greasy so I can use it before work). My hair has never looked or felt better! 😀 Love evoo and LOVE this argan oil!!

  • Joyce Noel says:

I just started using EVOO & I love it…if I only new before I wasted so much money on buying different hair products…my hair is so soft & shiny.I am texlaxed and loving it.

  • Jeannine A says:

I use it in my nightly water spritz… I'm a simple girl, this is a simple way to incorporate EVOO into my hair regimen. =)

even before going natural, i always found a way to work olive oil into my regimen. now, i use it, along with coconut, castor, and jojoba oils, as a pre-shampoo hot oil treatment. i also add a little to my deep conditioning treatment. it works wonders for my hair.

  • Spokenheart says:

I mostly only use products that olive oil in them, but i recently made a homemade prepoo with olive oil and a few other oils and the results were yaaaaaay! lol! im lovin learnign about the differ oils and how they are beneficial and how to use them in the raw

  • Q says:

@Anonymous February 27, 2012 12:10 PM best advice check out Naptural85's youtube channel I learned from her, shes the best. once you get comfortable with the basics you'll find what you like and venture off. I just made my own boddy butter

  • Fatima says:

EVOO was the first oil I started using on my natural hair. But when I discovered Coconut, Jojoba and Castor oils it was a wrap 🙂 All of them are great though.

  • Anonymous says:

Great ideas, ladies! I use it in my oil mix for my edges and scalp(with jojoba and JBCO), in my twice-a-day water spritz, and in my shea butter whip. Oh, and I cook with it too…lol….LOVE it!

  • Niqui36 says:

I used evoo regularly when I first went natural. For some reason I got away from it so I'll have to get it back into the rotation.

  • monniej says:

evoo is definitely my oil of choice. in fact i just picked up a gallon tin yesterday! i need the gallon because it's one of the main ingredients in my homemade mix i call my "custard", i treat my ends with it every night to seal, i use it to moisturizer my body after a shower, and it's the only oil i use for cooking. of all the products in my regimen it's the only one that i could never do without!

  • Discount Eyeglasses says:

This valuable is one of the top-quality post which I have study till date on this important niche. Extremely detailed but still to the point with out virtually any nonsense.

  • Carla says:

I generally like to blend EVOO with other oils such as grape seed and castor. I use it mainly to seal, but I may add some to my conditioners. Its my kitchen and beauty staple.

  • Anonymous says:

Haven't tried it yet but I have BIG plans for my next DC…hoping to add EVOO& honey to my ORS replenishing pak!

  • Anonymous says:

This has been around forever. My great great aunt (who lived to be 100) told my mom and I she would use EVOO every night before going to bed on her scalp and massage it. It aids in increasing blood flow in the scalp that helps in hair growth. All of my family has long hair and did this.

  • livelovelaugh331 says:

Im a evoo girl. I use it in my conditioners, to take down twists, and also mixed with agave nectar for a dt.

  • Anonymous says:

When I cut my hair, one of the first things in my new regimen was to add EVOO to a conditioner (that works very well by itself) and 'pre-poo' for about an hour or more. I did notice that my hair was oh-so-soft after washing and had a high sheen to it, but the day after I would have a bad case of dry scalp. I've eliminated all other factors(the shampoo, the conditioner and leave-in) and the only thing that's left is the EVOO. Why though?

  • Anonymous says:

    LOVE EVOO!!!

  • Fitz_nikki says:

I love evoo, I mix it with my deep conditioner. It leaves my hair very moisturized and soft. Evoo and coconut oil are neck to neck in my book.

  • J Kasheay says:

As a college student about to get back into regular classes, I'm looking for the least expensive things possible to keep up with my hair. Olive Oil works like a charm. My hair is really thick so it doesn't leave it greasy, and gives me great shine on my twists. I've never done a "pre-poo", but if I ever try it, I'll use olive oil.

  • launie says:

I use EVOO for everything involving my hair. I use it for a hot oil treatment, in my deep conditioner and with my lock and seal moisture method. I even use it as a makeup remover. It keeps my hair soft and it indeed had help with my dry hair! I love EVOO!!

  • Tiffany says:

I kicked coconut oil to the curb for it. It's thicker and I like the way it feels on my hair but I'm not picky. I use it on my face daily too. Good stuff and for $5, can't beat it.

  • Anonymous says:

Well aside from the fact that I use it to cook everything, I use it daily as a moisturizer, pre poo and part of deep conditioning. Olive oil is a staple for me but I use it in conjuction with a few other things like coconut oil and Castor oil.

  • Dee Emerald says:

I use it in my homemade deep conditioner, as a sealant and sometimes as a pre-poo treatment.

  • Whitney says:

I've never used EVOO in my hair regimen but I always hear good things about using it. I'm gonna try it this weekend!

  • Akeia says:

When I was rocking my TWA I used it in my daily spritz. Now, I use it in my conditioner. It's just a mix of V05 Tea Therapy Moisturizing conditioner, V05 Tea Therapy Clarifying conditioner, honey and EVOO. A nice amped up cheep conditioner. It works wonders in my hair!

  • Anonymous says:

@yazzy I do that same thing with my conditioner but I put an egg in it for protein. EVOO is the best!!

  • Anonymous says:

ok ok ok. You convinced me. I will try it again this evening as a pre-poo.

My 4c hair just doesn't experience the magic from EVCO and EVOO that everyone raves about. As a sealant, they make MY hair feel stiff and brittle.

If my hair feels shweet after the pre-poo, I will re-post and eat my words.

  • Destiny says:

I use mine as a shine booster! great shine and ALL natural like me 🙂

  • Dana says:

Yes, EVOO is a staple. I use it to pre-poo and detangle, in my oil mixture (EVOO, sweet almond, and jojoba) to seal, and added to my deep conditioners. I think I use more EVOO for my hair (and sometimes skin) than I do for cooking!

  • Amber says:

Yes, EVOO is the bee's knees! I use it as a pre-poo and love how soft my hair feels afterward. It's uses are so universal.

  • Anonymous says:

I use it in my deep conditioner and also as a hot oil treatment with a couple drops of rosemary oil.

  • Yazzy says:

I use it in my deep conditioner. I mix a quarter cup of evoo, a quarter cup of honey, and a quarter cup of my conditioner, and I put it in my hair for a couple of hours. My hair comes out softer than it's ever been! I also put it in my spray bottle with water, and I spray my hair every night; it always works!

  • honeybrown1976 says:

I use it as a sealant after moisturizing and I like it (though my favorite oil is coconut). It's a keeper.

  • cassburt88 says:

I revisited EVOO a few months ago and wondered, "Why in the heck did I stop using this stuff?!" That and EVCO

  • Anonymous says:

@Q: I am looking to start making my own products…any suggestions? I am currently transitioning (long term). I currently have micro as a protective style. I am currently 8 months post relaxer.

  • Q says:

I LOVE me some Evoo! I use it as a Prepoo everytime I wash and put it in ALL my mixes. I make all of my products except my shampoo.
