The Beta Alpha chapter of Delta Sigma Theta celebrated a decade of scholarship, service, and sisterhood with a three-day trip to Costa Rica and a photo shoot that broke the internet. “Melanin Illustrated” showcases the beauty of the ladies of red and white–in every hue. Rocking nude colored bathing suits, the sisters’ fab photos have gone viral.
“Being in a sisterhood means having a support system and someone always there to count on,” LaToya Owens tells Yahoo Style. “We spent three days bonding and doing fun activities, and then we rented out a catamaran that took us to a private beach where we took the photos.”
With the hashtags #MelaninIllustrated, #TITEtakescostarica, and #TITEturns10, Spring ’07 is sharing how stunning black women can be.
“Black women are often overlooked in beauty,” Owens says. “This was our way to shine a light on all types of black beauty.”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. “Our sorority is all about black excellence, ” said Owens. “We want to serve as an example and [show] appreciation of black women. Our commitment is to scholarship and service, and this was to honor the sisterhood.”
