“I try to follow the Beyonce Method … of allowing myself to only be upset for 24-hours, then dust myself off, and try again like Aaliyah.”

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! I’m Melinda or Mel for short. I am a freelance writer, career coach, and creator of a budding career-based website called She Who Grinds. I am a NYC native, with a professional background in Information Science, Information Technology, and Librarianship.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My favorite hobbies are indulging in intricate self-care practices, like facials, gel manicures + pedicures, writing, and praying/meditating. I also love collecting small luxury goods!

How long have you been on a self-healing or spiritual journey?

I want to say I’ve been on my spiritual journey for about 5 years now, and it all began once I entered my mid-20s. I did not really “know” myself until various areas of my life began to be tested and questioned. I had a lot of aha moments and realizations within the past couple of years.

I’m still on my spiritual path and journey and will forever be on a “journey” or path. New lessons and challenges will always present themselves in life, or the same lesson will continue to haunt you, until you have learned the lesson.

What event, situation, or life circumstance sparked your journey?

My spiritual journey began around 2015, when I started 2 new jobs/careers. I was very much in a self-discovery phase, and finding myself. My 9-5 job was very demanding, and made me question myself as a person. I had to make a lot of uneasy decisions in regards to choosing between following the corporate status quo, or choosing to stay aligned with my purpose and moral compass.

This was the first time in my life I had to learn how to “find” my voice, while staying in my power. Every area in my life began to crumble before things started to get better, and balance itself out. You have to start saying no to all the things you don’t want before you can start saying YES! I truly learned the meaning of the saying “new level; new devil.” When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Fast forward to 2017…that’s when I really began to find myself on a spiritual level, while picking apart each layer of my life, from personal, family, friends, and career. I also lost many friendships from 2015-present, and began finding teachers and mentors on my path that began to align and resonate with my life’s purpose.

In 2017, I met a key person, which led me to find my spiritual enlightenment, while giving me the encouragement to start my own freelance business, while dropping spiritual gems of wisdom in a non-traditional way.

I’ll forever be grateful for the connections I’ve made with people that have helped me on my path and journey. YouTube and Social Media networks are great outlets for helping others on similar paths learn more about their journey.

What’s your primary practice?

My primary practice is prayer, meditation, and constantly writing daily affirmations. I am a Christian, however, I do not conform with a denomination.

I’m an advocate for speaking things into existence. The way I speak things into existence, is by writing down my goals, wants, needs, or desires on paper. I’m a writer by nature, and this is something I practice on a daily basis.

I keep a small journal in my handbag or purse to jot down random thoughts, notes, feelings, and manifestations. I generally do not place a date on my entries. I like to hold the intention and space for my manifestations, to manifest when they are intended to.

What’s your top three favorite books?!

My favorite books at the moment are:
Miracles Now by Gabrielle (Gabby) Bernstein
The Wait by Devon Franklin & Meagan Good
The Power of Positive Energy (random find on Amazon) by Tanaaz Chubb

How has it benefited you mentally, physically/materially, and/or spiritually?

All 3 books help keep me grounded, optimistic, and within alignment. I have to say I frequently revisit all 3 books often, within the past 2-3 years.

Have you faced any challenges since beginning? How did you overcome?

Oh yes! I really had to hone in on the notion of why worry and panic, when you can pray! I try to follow the Beyonce method… of allowing myself to only be upset for 24-hours, then dust myself off, and try again like Aaliyah.

One of my biggest challenges is waiting on divine timing. Sometimes, it’s not up to us to decide, or to control how our destiny is meant to be played out in life. Letting go of codependent behaviors was also a challenge for me in the beginning, and the need to control every outcome in my life.

Now I just “flow” and allow myself to just “be free.” If something is meant to flow into my life, it will flow in. If something is meant to flow out of my life, it will flee!

Share one of the biggest winks or nods from God/The Universe that let you know you’re on the right path!

Manifestations do not happen overnight; what’s meant for you will always come to pass; once you’re ready to receive the blessing. My favorite quote by Rumi is “What you seek is always seeking you.” Just because something isn’t happening for you right now in the present moment, doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen for you.

Thinking something won’t happen or isn’t meant for you, automatically pushes you to walk away, from aligning yourself to work towards that particular goal. A saying I started telling myself, and a personal mantra is “without knowing your true purpose, you’re not in alignment with your true self.”

What are you saying ‘YES!’ to? Do you follow the Beyonce method?
