Black Hair Products: DIY Hair Detangler – 4 Super Easy Recipes

By Jacqueline Samaroo

DIY-ing some of the products you use in your hair definitely has its perks. It can help you save a buck or two, and sometimes a whole lot more! It also puts you in control of the ingredients used. That’s why we’ll be taking a look at DIY hair detangler for curly hair.

Detangler is an integral part of any natural haircare routine. Being able to whip up some homemade detangler spray is a big plus when it comes to taking care of your textured hair.

Don’t get us wrong – buying commercially made natural Black hair products has many benefits, too. They are convenient, come in such a wide range, and you can often find products to match your specific textured hair type.

Plus, depending on the brands you buy, you could be supporting a Black-owned beauty brand with your purchase.

Now, let’s get to those homemade detangler for Black hair recipes!

We simply love it when the stuff we put in our hair is also stuff we wouldn’t hesitate to use in our food. You know – good for you inside and out stuff, like this coconut oil and olive oil detangler.

You’ll need:

  • A quarter cup coconut oil
  • A quarter cup olive oil
  • A half cup water
  • A few drops of your choice of essential oil

How to make it:

  1. Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle.
  2. Give it a good shake.
  3. Spray away! Your homemade detangler spray is ready to use.

Coconut oil smells yummy all on its own but adding your favorite essential oil really ups the fragrance. There’s an essential oil set we suggested in our recent Mother’s Day gift list that would be perfect to play around with in your homemade detangler spray.

Detanglers are all about adding slip to hair. They coat your strands and smooth down your cuticles (the scales that form the outer layer of each strand).

The best homemade detangler for curly hair lets strands glide easily past each other so knots are painlessly released. One ingredient that’s particularly good at this is aloe vera.

You’ll need:

  • Pure aloe vera juice
  • A few drops of your choice of essential oil
  • That’s it!

How to make it:

  1. Pour some of the juice into a spray bottle.
  2. Add essential oil.
  3. Give it a good shake.

This is a really great homemade detangler for matted hair – the kind of tangles you’re considering just ripping out or snipping out. Don’t! Try this aloe vera homemade detangler for natural hair, instead.

Knowing how to detangle African American hair is really very important. Textured hair has a natural tendency to curl and coil around itself, forming knots. You can do serious damage to your hair if you use the wrong method to try to get rid of those knots.

Our third homemade detangler for natural hair can help. It features apple cider vinegar in the starring role.

You’ll need:

  • A half cup apple cider vinegar
  • A half cup distilled water
  • 1-2 teaspoons olive oil (coconut oil works well, too)
  • A few drops of your choice of essential oil

How to make it:

  1. Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle.
  2. Give it a good shake.
