Thick Natural Hair is Beautiful!
Zara jumps to the defense of thick natural hair as it gets attacked from all sides, including being attacked by a too-large percentage of Black people who are yet to accept and love their own hair in its natural state. The four disturbing fallacies she totally destroys are:
1. They say: “You should wash your hair every day.”
Zara reminds us that hygral fatigue is a real phenomenon that can result from hair repeatedly swelling when wet and then shrinking as it dries.
Plus, over-washing your hair can strip the scalp of its sebum leading to dry scalp and possibly exacerbating oily scalp issues.
2. They say: “Black hair is unprofessional.”
Zara counters with, “First of all, this is absolutely ridiculous!” Watch the video to see how she calls out this huge double standard that is evidenced in many sectors, including in the military.

3. They say: “Straight hair is the best type of hair. Curly/Kinky hair is nappy.”
Zara scoffs as she pins this fallacy to it “being perpetuated for centuries that our hair is not good enough.” And, while naturally showing lots of love for her own thick natural hair, she emphatically maintains that one type of hair does not necessarily look better than the other.
How else does she take on this particular topic that’s “near and dear” to her heart? Find out in the video!
4. They say: “Are you a Black Panther? Wearing natural hair is a political statement.”
Zara agrees that natural hair, in its many states, has understandably been used at times to make a political statement. HOWEVER, with a shoutout to Erykah Badu’s own thick natural hair which she wears in many fantastic natural hairstyles, Zara goes on to point out that for many naturalistas, our hairstyles are more about keeping our hair healthy and well-maintained, while flaunting its superb versatility!
