Good morning. God morning to you.

When I sit down at this microphone, the silence gets louder. Then every thought, then every role, the podcaster who sits down is gone. The one who is trying to help, trying to serve is gone. The one who says and asks, “How can I help today?” is gone, and only service remains. But not individualized. Not a me and you. Not a teacher and a student. There’s just knowledge here.

But I notice, I notice that when I’m sitting at my computer editing, answering emails, paying bills, or refreshing dashboards, Nikki, ego, the kingdom seems to get turned down or pushed back into the background. It seems to be on the back burner, and real life needs to happen. Now we have to do the things.

And so I ask you, where is it that you disappear? Where do you disappear?

For me, it’s here on this microphone. It’s me when I’m writing. It’s me when I’m reading the right book, when I’m in the Bible and it’s actually making sense and there’s revelation happening because of the Holy Spirit and I’m feeling the fire. There’s a disappearance. And what we have to do is be more in that than in those places where we are us.

I know I can’t say, “Yeah, don’t go to work,” because obviously when you’re with others, and especially people that you don’t particularly want to be around, you are wearing a mask. You feel like you’re in performance; you’re definitely being somebody, right? I can’t tell you not to do that, but I can tell you to be aware.

To become aware. To pan out, to zoom out, to be the space, to be the whole office, the whole building, the whole city instead of just that one little body that would prefer not to be there. The body that is resisting that moment, that can’t wait to go home, can’t wait to log off, can’t wait to get to the next weekend or to vacation.

School’s just starting this weekend and I’m already like, “When is the first break?”

But then there’s a silence right next to that thought. And so there’s always a choice. I can tune in to those thoughts, that thought train of, “Uh-oh, things are about to get hectic. There’s a lot going on, a lot of responsibilities, a lot of things on my plate, too much to juggle. I’m already pre-stressed out.” Or I can hear the silence.

What I’ve learned is that the more I hear the silence, the more I keep one ear here, the more it’s like I’m sitting at the mic even when I’m driving the car to school to drop them off, or while I’m editing and the mic is off. If I can still have this posture, the silence is loud. It’s louder than everything.

So I invite you to begin to see when it is that the anxiety hits you during the day. It comes in waves, and it usually comes almost at a prescribed time. My bird, Pete, who is a wild bird, comes by every day at the same time. Every day, I can expect Him between 9:50 and 10:30 a.m. I told you that when I lived in St. Louis for those six months, that layover I had between my old life and my new life, anxiety would come every day at about 1 p.m. Once I saw it, the jig was up.

It didn’t make the anxiety less painful. It still sucked. It was like giving birth. I’ve told you this before, and I’m sorry for repeating it, but it’s so crucial. I can remember it like it was yesterday, grabbing my mother’s counter like I was going through pregnancy labor pains, just breathing through the wave of anxiety and not letting it overwhelm me. Letting it be there, not needing it to go away, not rushing to the pantry to find something to eat or something to do, not finding my phone to scroll. No, I would let it wash over me.

If I could, I would sit down and not sulk in it, fold under it, or cry. I would refuse to go to sleep while it was happening. I would become very alert. Again, it sucks, but I would allow it to be there. “Hello again, old friend, here we are. Same time, same place, just about.” And then just as fast as it comes, it goes.

I wasn’t trying to feel Love or feel God to push it out. I wasn’t reaching for mantras or affirmations, which can be helpful, but sometimes you just have to surrender. There’s nothing you can do because you’re not actually there to choose an affirmation or to pick a tool out of the box. There are no tools. There is no box at the end of the day. There is no day, no beginning, no end. It’s just this Love.

It’s just this appearing as, “Maybe if I do this, this will happen again,” or “Maybe if I do that…” I spoke with someone a couple of days ago and it’s like this cause and effect. Five years ago, I practiced this particular spiritual practice and this happened. I did X and Y happened, or I did A and B happened. So now today, maybe if I do A, B should happen.

Living this way as a human bound in time and space to these “if I do this, then this happens” rules means you will be waiting for that to happen forever. You have to unsee the happening. You have to know that nothing is happening. Nothing has ever happened. It appears to, but you have to keep stepping out of it.

Hearing the same thoughts, the same desires, the same patterns of, “If I do this, then this will happen. If I try this, then this will happen. If I work harder, if I stress myself out, then I can make this happen.” Hearing that and recognizing it for what it is, which is old. It is a rerun. It is an echo. You hear it and you choose silence, even if just for a split second.

In the silence, there is a softening of the stomach. There is a letting down of the shoulders, like a letting down of the hair, an unfurling. Like taking off the bra, taking off the shoes, taking off the socks in the middle of the night because your feet are hot. It’s a relief. It might only last for a split second before it all comes back in, but you’ll see that crack, that little bit of blue in the cloudy sky, and you’ll know what’s possible.

Then there may be a thought like, “I should be able to see all the blue, feel all the blue.” That’s just another thought. You choose the silence again. You’re no longer tempted by those thoughts. Every thought comes to lead you out, and they aren’t these little nefarious things. They aren’t. If anything, you should just see them as pointers. Every single one of them is a finger pointing back at you within, to the silence, to that consciousness, to what you are beyond thought.

It doesn’t matter that thoughts are present. The sky doesn’t care that clouds are present. The sea doesn’t care that fish are present. Notice that you can just be the sea, that He can just be the ocean, that you can just be the sky, that you can just be the silence, that you don’t have to cause it, create it, or hype it up.

There is a gorgeous Rumi poem where he talks about a hen inviting a camel into the hen house and how it would absolutely destroy the house. The whole structure would be demolished. He said, “There is an excess in spiritual searching that is profound ignorance.” He says we have to let that ignorance be our teacher.

The friend breathes into one who has no breath. A deep silence revives the listening and the speaking of those two who meet on the riverbank. Like the ground turning green in a spring wind, like the bird song beginning inside the egg, like this universe coming into existence, the lover wakes and whirls in a dancing joy, then kneels down in praise.

He says we faint because we want too much. We want too much at once. We’re trying to gulp. We’re trying to get it all at once, and that is not what we came here to do. You came here to be God conscious, to be Christ conscious, to be Love conscious. You could not be more conscious in this moment. You could not be experiencing more Love in this moment than you are right now.

You’re doing nothing wrong. You’re right on time and right where you are supposed to be, even though everything in your entire being is telling you that you’re not, that you should be further, elsewhere, somewhere different, somewhere far away, or somewhere in solitude. That’s mine. You are right where you are supposed to be, or else you would not be there. You are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing, or else you would not be doing it.

Every question you have is not your question. It’s not your thought. It’s a leftover. It’s a leftover. I don’t eat leftovers for real. I eat fruit most of the time, so it’s a fresh juice, a fresh smoothie, a fresh banana unpeeled in that moment. You don’t want these leftovers. You don’t want those leftover thoughts, those remnants from your old self, the one that thought it was separate from God, the one who was pleading for God to come when God is like, “Dude, I was here before you. Turn around. Look up. Look in. At the same time, look back. Right here. Feel me. How do you think you got here?”

He didn’t bring you here to leave you. He did not bring you here through all of that to leave you here. He’s not putting you through something right now as a lesson or as a consequence of actions. You’re not outside of His will. You are hearing these words right now, which means you are more than within His will. You are Him. He is you. Say, “I am You.”

That’s the reason why I can do what I do here. Because I know I am not. I know that my I is His, and that produces words that reach you, that can touch you, that can pull you back into You, out of you, to take you out of your mind, to turn Him up, to turn your mind down, to turn the anxiety down, to turn the fear off.

Every time you find yourself Googling problems or Redditing symptoms, stop. See a stop sign in your mind. Catch yourself in that old leftover habit, that remnant. That’s not who you are. Anytime you find yourself super aware of that body and worried for that body and everything around it, its family, its job, chill. This Love is short-circuiting that and you have to let it unfold little by little.

He’s making everything conscious. You’re making everything conscious now, which means things will begin to move faster while seemingly moving slower. The days will be a little bit slower, but you’ll seem to be achieving faster because you are in full alignment, so fully aligned that even that word is clumsy. It takes at least two things to be in alignment, and there’s just one here.

Right now I need you. If you’re sitting, sit up. Your head is being stretched up away from your shoulders. Your neck is elongated. Can you feel that difference? Your shoulders are down and back. There’s a center there that you’ve become acutely aware of that feels like next, that feels like everything, that feels like your future that doesn’t quite feel like it belongs there. But instead of taking that to be a failure or a mismatch, you see it as a premonition.

That body is going where that feeling already is. Everything around you will change according to that feeling, which is right there. The room that you’re in that you’ve seen a million times, that space that you’re in, is pregnant with this feeling. Think of the images of Mother Mary like Our Lady of Guadalupe when she’s pregnant with Jesus. You’re pregnant with Love, with Light. You are full of Light. You are absolutely expectant. It is happening because you know nothing is happening. You’re aware of everything while knowing nothing is here.

Mother Mary said, “Be it done unto me.” That’s all you’re saying without words. Let it be done unto me. What You have for me, let it be done unto me. You have me here, let it be done. Your kingdom come.

It’s scary and it’s not easy, but I need you to know that I’m here with you. I’m holding your hand. We’re breathing through these birthing pains together, laughing in between the waves of grief, burnout, and suffering, and then holding each other again when you can feel that wave coming back. You have me here. This Love is me, too. I have you here. This Love is you. I love you, and we’ll chat soon.

I know what it feels like to wake up with a pit in your stomach and thoughts that are racing. I also know how to turn God up, and that automatically turns the thoughts down. It turns the anxiety down. You don’t have to carry this anxiety today. You don’t have to carry it alone.

Every week, I hold space for private one-on-one spiritual direction intensives where we go straight to the heart of what’s keeping you from peace and pray through it together.
