The Switch Behind Your Breastbone: Flipping Into Magnetic Presence

“Every one of the 43,242 breaths taken every twenty-four hours must connect with God. Only when his every breath connects with God, constantly interacting with Him, can one be known as a Sufi. This means speaking without talking, smiling without smiling, seeing without looking, under-sleeping, and eating without eating.” – Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

Good morning. God morning to you. I’m sure you’ve already turned on a light today. Flipped a switch. But there is a switch behind your breastbone that you don’t usually switch on. And right now, without thinking, hit it. Flip it. And notice how much sweeter the scene gets. It was inert, same old, same old. But when you flip that switch, you become magnetic. You can feel it, even if it’s just this little bit of light right there behind your ribs, behind your chest. Just a little bit of sweetness, a little bit of a stirring there, that completely changes everything.

I know it feels small, but what would happen if you went throughout this day with the light on there? With the Love on there. Just flipping that switch, and every time you notice that somehow it got turned back off, you turn it back on. It gets seemingly turned off when thoughts come in. Thoughts cloud, they darken. You flip the switch, you’re magnetic again. This works at 3 a.m. When the thoughts get loud and scary, flip the switch. Here, only Love is here.

On every breath, I cannot express the importance of this. And it doesn’t require you to be in lotus position or prostrating with your forehead to the ground. Every breath, only Love is here. Only You are here, God, not me. I am not, none of this is, only You are. Only Love is here. Only Love is here. Every breath must connect with God.

Bawamuyadin says this means speaking without talking, like I’m doing right now. Smiling without smiling. Seeing without looking. Understanding without thinking. Walking without walking, sleeping without sleeping, and eating without eating. He said these are the subtle ways to be a Sufi, like Rumi, like Kabir, like you.

The amount of heaviness I feel, from my field and from many, many others, emails, DMs, is great. But it’s an amazing contrast when suffering comes to see it and to allow it to immediately remind you to flip the switch. Sometimes you have to flip it for someone else. They don’t seem to get the benefit in that moment. You flip it and you fill it for them. You look at them while filling the light, while being the light. You don’t look at them from the inertness, from the sadness. You look at them from His joy. You look at them with His eyes. You don’t see sickness. You don’t see death. You don’t see lack. You don’t see, “Oh, woe is you, I’m so sorry.” You can say those words because, as humans, that’s what we do when we get bad news, someone tells us someone passed or someone’s sick or someone lost something great. I’m sorry, but you’re filling Him. You’re filling this quiet joy, the sweetness. You mix the sweetness into their sorrow and something will shift for them. It might be in that moment, but more likely when they get home, a wave of relief, a wave of bliss will come from nowhere and they will not associate it with you because it wasn’t you. It was God there looking like you. God here looking like me. And we make others, the seeming others, the rest of ourselves, feel better until they can make themselves feel better. When I say better, I mean feel God, feel Him.

There’s times when I don’t feel Him, but they are short, they are so short, and they are horrible. They are terrible. And that is why I do what I do every single day because I don’t want anybody to have to experience that. I came here, I’ve told you all about the videos of me when I was a kid, those VHS tapes that my mom and dad still have of me, my sister’s so happy and joyful and jumping double dutch and smiling and giggling, and I am serious, so serious, lost in thought, like trapped in this prison of “I’ve gotta figure this out, I’ve gotta figure this out, I’ve gotta get out of here” because I’ve never felt like I belonged here. And so I came here so serious and you have to grow out of the seriousness. And I can’t say I’ve done that fully. That is a big part of who I am still. The ego is serious. “This life is so serious” is what Nikki would say. But the more I practiced smiling until God took over my face, until God became my face, the more I practiced that, and it started in college, the lighter everything got inside, outside. I’m feeling that light for you right now.

Also, lately, I’ve been feeling a pull to connect again with you in a deeper way, like a more personal way.
