Good morning. God morning to you.
I had a call with one of you, one of your other selves, yesterday about why they return to sadness when all they ever want to do is return to Love. Why do they always return to their old baseline, even though they know the consequences and results of that state, of that original sin of believing that you’re separate and apart from God, that He’s not in you, and that you’re not in Him?
Again, remember, you have to be that tree that is conscious of the sap. You have to be that fish that is conscious of the water, not just one swimming through it. As soon as you relax, it’s there, and the sadness leaves. You don’t have to get up and force excitement. You don’t have to force this Love. Just like a tree is not forcing the sap, a fish doesn’t have to force either. It’s a recognition, and I’m inviting you back into that right now.
Sit back, sit up, do both, or stand up and take up space. Square up on your present reality.
I used to think that… I’ve told you this before, my grandpa had many words of wisdom for me, and one I did not agree with was him telling me that you have to stay on an even keel. Like, don’t get too up, because you’ll get down. That has been very true in my personal experience, so much so that when things were going really well, I’d be looking around like, “Okay, when’s the shoe going to drop? Where’s the other side of this?” I know there are two sides of the same coin out here in Maya, in the illusion.
Whenever I’m up now, it doesn’t even take an hour before either a thought comes or some random circumstance happens. Like last night, trying to schedule a podcast episode; that has never happened to me before in my whole entire life. It would not do it. It would not do it. Me five years ago would have been very frustrated up until 2:00 a.m. But now, with this Love leading entirely where this abidance has become beyond the word abidance, I went to sleep. I was able to sleep.
I can see that the anxiety, sadness, frustration, or situation that seems to cause those very familiar ways of being… the way that you feel normally… even if that is just nothing particularly wrong, but not particularly happy either, right? Whatever is there, that comes up the way symptoms would come up for me whenever I would start trying to eat berries and nuts as my primary diet, which I had done in my early twenties. I’d throw everything out.
I had this impulse to eat raw vegan before I even had a name for it. I would start, and three days in, I’d get sick. That would be the excuse, especially from my then-husband, to say, “You can’t do this. You shouldn’t do this. It’s harmful.”
If I was to have pushed through… I learned many, many years later that those are just symptoms that you’re cleansing. If you just give it a couple more days, you move past it, and then you feel great. That has been my experience now.
So when those feelings of sadness, anxiety, old thoughts, or old fears come up, that mechanism comes up: recognize it for what it is and see that it is leaving you. It is coming up to say goodbye so that it can go. It’s making room for more Light so that you can hold more Light. You can hold more of this Love. You can be aware of more of this water, of more of this sap. That’s it.
It’s not a sign that you’re moving backwards. It’s not a sign that things are falling apart. It’s not a sign that it’s not working. That’s what they thought on the call yesterday: “Oh, when I get sad again, that means I’m doing something wrong,” or “I can’t hold Love. I can’t do this, or it’s not worth it because then I’m going to feel sad or maybe even sadder than I was before.”
It’s not the Love that causes the sadness. It reveals it. It uncovers and reveals everything that is not yours, that is not of you, and that is not of God, because it must leave. It’s not a fight. We don’t force. We don’t force anything.
I keep a feather right here next to me because all of this is like that: the lightest touch, the lightest touch. Even when I’m feeling Love, it’s the lightest touch behind my breastbone, the lightest touch that I can feel. What’s the lightest touch you can feel there right now? The lightest sensation. Close your eyes if you need to, and scan the body. Feel the familiar way that body is held, the familiar twinges or tensions. You’re very perceptive.
That wall that seems like you can’t move past, either around your heart or directly in front of where you feel your body is… there is no wall. There is no block. There is the lightest touch there, like Mooji would say, as if God was kissing you from within, from within your chest, inside of you. How would it feel for God to kiss your heart?
That sweetness that I can sense you feeling… can you hold that? As you open your eyes, can you see now that the room is different? It has that sweetness added to it, stirred into it, mixed into it. It has the flavor of that inner kiss. The moment has been kissed. This moment has been blessed. You have been blessed. What you just did blessed you yesterday, today, and tomorrow, because there isn’t three. There appears to be, but there’s one: the One that appears as the three, the three in the One.
Rumi says:
All day I think about it, then at night I say it. Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that, and I intend to end up there.
This drunkenness began in some other tavern. When I get back around to that place, I’ll be completely sober. Meanwhile, I’m like a bird from another continent, sitting in this aviary. The day is coming when I fly off, but who is it now in my ear who hears my voice? Who says words with my mouth? Who looks out with my eyes?
What is the soul? I cannot stop asking. If I could taste one sip of an answer, I could break out of this prison for drunks. I didn’t come here of my own accord, and I can’t leave that way. Whoever brought me here will have to take me home. (Coleman Barks, The Big Red Book)
This poetry… I never know what I’m going to say. I don’t plan it. When I’m outside the saying of it, I get very quiet and rarely speak at all. That last part is me outside of this show and the calls that I take with you. I rarely speak. Me and the kids have a blast, but my phone has been on Do Not Disturb for a very long time. Very dry, my phone.
I didn’t like poetry at all. I was always invited in the nineties and early two thousands to those… I don’t even know what they’re called, where people are sitting around snapping their fingers. I’ve never been a fan of that. I don’t even know what it’s called, but I respect the culture. It was never my thing. Now, somehow, I’m writing poetry and loving reading it every day because of the kind of poetry it is: divine Love. It’s the sweetness.
I pray that you like the poetry as much as I like reading it and sharing it with you, and that you can feel what he’s saying. You know that what you are is beyond this. That’s why it feels so tight and foreign.
There’s a song from AJR, my daughter’s favorite band, where he says, “I’m not happy yet, but I’m way less sad than I used to be.” There’s a beauty in this that you have to embrace. You have to love the sadness. It’s so paradoxical. Resisting the sadness will bring on more, but at the same time, you don’t give into it either. There’s a way to lightly, like with a feather, love it. Bring the Love to it. Look at it with the Love, from the Love. It doesn’t like to be looked at.
Most things don’t like to be looked at. It will go, and then in its place, there you are, happy and shining effortlessly, serving, and generating a life that looks like you feel.
You’re the source of that. You’re generating that right now. You can keep saying inside, “Love is generating it.” Whatever the “it” is that you’re anxious about, Love is generating that. Love is causing that. Love is producing that. Love is responding to that. Love is becoming that. Love has become that.
You are Love. I love you.
I know what it feels like to wake up with a pit in your stomach and thoughts that are racing. I also know how to turn God up, and that automatically turns the thoughts down. It turns the anxiety down. You don’t have to carry this anxiety today. You don’t have to carry it alone. Every week, I hold space for private one-on-one spiritual direction intensives where we go straight to the heart of what’s keeping you from peace and pray through it together.
