The process of going natural was somewhat gradual. Against my dad's wishes my sister and I went to the hair salon and got our first perm at around 13. The perm worked until about a week later, when it was time to wash my hair. All of the burning, itching, and greasing went down the drain in a matter of seconds. I kept getting perms for about three years. Then upon graduating high school, I decided to cut my hair. It was broken and severely damaged from the perm anyway. After finally decided that perms were not worth even half of the hassles of the results, I gradually stopped relaxing my hair altogether. I have been natural ever since. I have never really embraced the natural state completely until now. (For me the idea of a natural girl was a person who listened to neo-soul and had an Erykah Badu-esque personality). I have since changed this illogical, often perpetuated stereotype. Recently I have been learning how to style my own hair and it has given me a new-found sense of independence. Sites such as these have helped me to embrace my curly, sometimes unruly, now growing and very healthy hair!!
