Since March of this year, I’ve only used conditioners and all natural butters for moisture and styling. In years past, I’ve used everything from Sebastian Potion 9 to Fantasia IC to ‘define’ my hair, but it seemed that I was sacrificing health for beauty. My hair never grew past shoulder length, and my ends were snapping and popping all over the place. After reading Teri’s blog– which is all about leaving in conditioner after detangling, I decided to give it a try.

I find Giovanni Direct Leave In conditioner to be the best leave in ever. It detangles and keeps hair moist. I really don't want to use cones in my hair because I henna. I found that cones clash against my henna'ed hair.
Do not leave Herbal Essence Hello Hydration has a leve in conditioner. It gave me horrible frizz, but it works well when you just wash it off.
I've been using the DevaCurl OC based off of the recommendations on NC.com. But now that I'm looking are your blog, looks like I've been using the wrong one. What's the difference in the result between the DevaCurl & DevaCare OC? I'm hennaing right now but am tempted to run out and get it! lol!!!
Suburbanbushbabe was kind enough to hand over her Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. OMG I love the smell and it made my hair so soft! I’ll continue to buy it. I’m still using the DevaCare One condish and I’m liking it more and more each day. Thank you Nikki!
Hey Maria! I’m happy you decided to try it! The price is ridiculous, which is why I only use it as a leave-in. Using it this way, allows me to use one bottle for 2-3 months! I never use it to detangle…i’d be broke!
Hey Nikki! I bought the DevaCare One conditioner yesterday at Ulta. It hurt my feelings to pay $18 for a conditioner, but I really like it alot. I probably won’t buy it all the time because of the price, but when I don’t mind splurging I will def purchase again. I bought it from Ulta.
Hey Beautifully Human!
I’m sorry that I’ve enabled your inner PJ 😉 But I’m soooo happy to hear that your efforts haven’t been in vain! Our hair seems to respond to the same products…if you try Karens stuff before I do, please submit a review for me to publish for the other readers! I’ve always been curious about her products, and I’m tempted to try them 😀 I’m suppose to be on a budget, but you know how that goes 😉
Stay in touch girly! Do you have new pics up yet? You take wayyyy too long with that, lol!
ttyl,
nik
*warning long comment!*
So thanks to your blog i’m slowly reaching PJ status! 😛 lol I purchased the Jessicurl WDT last Thursday. My girlfriend and I went to this distributor who carries a whole bunch of natural/curly hair products you can normally only purchase online so I was in hair product heaven to say the least, but stopped myself from going crazy and managed to come out of there with just the jessicurl WDT. I’ve used it twice so far as a leave-in. Once on co-washed hair and last night I used it on freshley shampooed and DT’d hair. I mixed it with my Karen’s hair milk and then proceeded to put my hair in twists.
OMG! Fantastic! I unraveled my twists this morning and I have the most shiny defined twist out! I have never achieved a twist out this awesome looking before. I think the blend of leave-in’s did the trick for me but the thickness and moisture level of the jessicurl I think was the secret ingredient to a great twist out for sure!
I’ve just started getting into twist outs and have tried them a few times always feeling frustrated in the end b/c by the end of the day its frizz city. But the more I follow your rules of saturating the hair with intense moisture the more I truly believe this is the key to not only more moisturized hair but also to better style outcomes!
Also, since reading up on how you use shea butter to seal your ends I decided to go back to my Karen’s hair cream which is a combination of shea whipped with various yummy oils. I found that the reason I didn’t like it the first time was b/c I wasn’t properly emulsifying the cream in my hands before applying it to my hair. Which as you know for us fine haired gals means coated weighed down hair! So this time I made sure to really work the cream into my hands making sure I had a thin layer of shine in my palms and then on dry twists I just gently rub it through from top to ends. Fabulous!
And to finish off lol I tried some of my girlfriends hello hydration condish in my hair last week (wanted to test it before I purchased) and I’m truly impressed! This will be replacing TJ’s Nourish spa for me. The only reason I was able to obtain TJ’s is b/c my mom lives in Jersey and when I visit her I make her take me to NY to hit up the TJ’s there so I can buy out an entire shelf full of the stuff lol But now that i’ve tried hello hydration I enjoy the moisture level and its the perfect consistency. Me likey 🙂
Ok i’m done! And not that I should be encouraging your PJ’ism but I’m patiently waiting for you to try Karen’s body beautiful prods. I freaking love love love her stuff! I’m visiting my mom in NJ for christmas and we’re taking a special trip down to Brooklyn just to visit her store! lol I’m saving my pennies 🙂 If/when you decide to try her stuff PM me so I can give you some rec’s that I think you’ll enjoy. She uses wonderful all natural ingredients and the slip her leave-in hair milks provide is unbelievable. Plus her customer service is amazing and its black owned which is a big plus 🙂
Ok i’m really done now. lol I’m so happy you’re doing this blog btw. I’m learning A LOT!
Kayasmommy, I actually ran into a guy selling it, while I was out of town (on NC A&T's campus). I plan to order some online, but I haven't chosen a story yet. Do you know of any good places?
Dyani, I use Aubrey Organics Mandarin Magic Hair Gelly to slick my edges. Not a lot- just enough to cover them on wet hair. I then immediately tie on a scarf to let it set in the 'down' position 🙂 Fantasia IC was too hard on my hair and I believe the protein in it broke my fragile ends off.
hth!!! Thanks for the questions and comments ladies 😀
Do you use gel to lay down your edges when and if you pull your hair back? I am currently using IC Hair Polisher (Blue for color treated). It holds, but the jury is still out on that one.
Where do you get your shea butter? I’ve seen a couple of sites claiming to sell it harvested straight from Africa…but I’m a little leary of companies overpromising online. The potential for substandard business practices just seems too great to me. Ok, that was probably too much info. Lol! Anyay… any recs would be greatly appreciated.
