Hola Chicas,
I don’t know what it’s like in your neck of the woods, but it’s chilly here in NC! With the humidity and dew point dropping, I’ve been considering experimenting with my Curlformers again.
Here are some pics from last winter’s Curlformer adventures:
In the past, I did one set a week (Sundays of course, and air-dry over night), and wore it primarily in protective styles. Curlformer sets make for easy and beautiful updos– excellent for growing out your curls! The immediate result is similar to an old school press and curl–not really a good look if you like big, wild hair. As the days wear on, it gets bigger and poofier, especially if the humidity from the shower gets to it.
Here’s the instructional video I watched last year:
Although her instructions are very straightforward, it’ll take you a minute to adjust to ‘the motion’. I remember becoming incredibly frustrated the first go round…it took me like an hour and a half to finish! After that, it was easy peasy 🙂 They’re expensive, but much easier to apply than rollers in my opinion.
I’ll probably dust them off this weekend after doing a much needed henna treatment (I’m going on 1.5 months…tripping).

Oh my goodness!!!!! I just took out my curl former set and I cannot believe the results. My hair is stretched, perfectly curled and not frizzy at all! I did my typical, coconut oil pre wash treatment, wash, co-wash detangle, deep treatment then used the aphogee green tea reconstructor spray, a little bit of thermasilk leave in, lacio lacio leave in and sealed with One n Only argan oil. My oh My! I love curl formers. I used 46 extra long and wide formers and it took me a while to put them in my 4b super thick, bra strap length (when straight) hair. I slept in the formers (ouch city!) and took them out after having them in for about 8-9 hours. They are uncomfortable to say the least. They are heavy and sleeping was horrific but the results are worth the crick in my neck and bags under my eyes. My curls are smooth and perfectly formed. Very Shirley Temple so I'm not sure how to style them but the results are amazing. I was afraid the curls would be dry or frizzy but they absolutely are smooth and bouncy. I wonder how long the set will last. I definitely would only at most want to do them once a week because of the tension on my scalp and the impossibility of a good nights rest. Thanks for the suggestion Nikki!!!
I just purchased the "extra long and wide" kit from their website. After 8 months struggling with wearing my hair curly (it's natural but I usually blow dry and flat iron) I've reverted back to wearing it straight. This post has inspired me to give curly a try again. Maybe this time I'll get consistent results. Thanks Nikki!
Love the result! 🙂 Which products did you use?
@Anonymous 11/24/10– Try Natural Oasis Setting lotion. I use that and have NO frizz. Check out my full process for frizz free curls at www.sharronsguide.blogspot.com
I have used the curlformers twice and am optimistic that the outcome will be good but my curls still look pretty frizzy and dry by day 3. Any other suggestions on setting lotions and how can I maintain the curls? Please help!
PS – love the blog!
I've been using Curlformers for about a month now… I L-O-V-E them! I put them in at night for heat free styling.. and I am in love with my results. In addition, I've noticed hair growth since I've used them because I have not sued heat in about 5 weeks now… My hair last about 5-7 days in them, which is perfect bc I am ready for a co-wash/wash around that time 🙂 I to have been looking for the perfect setting lotion so my curls are not crunchy and are frizz free! I will try the Kinky-Curly Spiral Spritz as suggested above by another user. Thanks for the tip! I'm also thinking about trying Beautiful Curls to set my curls… wish me luck! I plan to post a youtube video and review on my results shortly…
im def putting these on my Christmas list for hubby to get me. by that time my would will be back to its normal length.
I have used Curlformers for about 4 months. I started with the box set for $60.I love them. I have been looking for the right setting lotion trying about five different kinds(liquid and cream)but it left the curls too heavy and stiff. Just on a chance, I tried setting my hair with Kinky-Curly Spiral Spritz and the results were fantastic. My curls were bouncy and light not heavy or crunchy. It looked like I used a curling iron. Pin curls at night make the curls last longer.(Been a nat head since the Fugees came out.)lol
I’ve used Curlformers for about 5 months and though I really appreciate the tool, I have to say that it has to be something wrong with the long&narrow ones, mainly the green ones. So far I’ve lost 10 CF!! Considering that the package brings only 8 of them, it means that I lost more than a package so far. No matter how carefully I am when set my hair, these green ones are really weak. So, ladies, be carefull when buy them: avoid the long&narrow curlformers!!
PS.: I'm the same who talked about the shea butter above.
I ordered my curlformers from www.curlformers.com and recived them in London, England today. As soon as I opened the package I had to try them out, the results were good and can see the potential but it looked a touch dry. Will try it with shea butter this weekend.
I am hooked on this blog and am slowly becoming a P.J.

I love the curlformers. Since using them my hair has gotten so much longer. I've told most of my friends about it and they're sold! Since I am a struggling college student, the one thing I didnt like about the curlformers was the PRICE. $60 for some rollers?? But they are worth it. They give the PERFECT curl every time. **For new curlformer users: The video fails to mention that hair should be wet, not damp when you use it. The wetter it is, the easier it will be to get the hair through the roller.*** Good luck!
Well, just in case someone in the future has the same doubt I had, I'll let you know that I found the perfect combination to use with my curlformers: Devacare One + some Set it free + shea butter!! My hair is amazing!! I am sure the reason is the shea butter. I didn't like it, but I had never used it on wet hair. This is def. my holy graal 🙂
Hi everybody,
I've tried the curlformers twice so far and didn't love the result. I think I've not used a right setting lotion. The only one I have is Avlon setting lotion. Also tried with Avlon mousse, but the ends turned out poof. Well, I'd like to have some tips. TIA!
Hey Nikki, I know this is an old post but I thought I'd share this video link. I found your pic in this vid and thought how crazy it was they were using your image (I'm sure w/o your permission)
I have been using curlformers for about 2 months now.I LLLLUUUUVVVV them. Im a newbie since October '09. I actually put them in every night. I braid my hair with leave in conditioner (still searching for an all natural realllyyy good leavi in) and armour butter to seal (luv this! its an all natural shea butter and other natural ingriedents.{scentrixbodyoils.com}.
it still comes out fuzzy a little but im starting to get compliments and luv it. I am in humid South fl., But am i using them to much or should I not twist it?, will the nylon break your hair if u use it to much? any other suggestions would be great.:0)
I'm going through the transition now and I'm about half and half. The curlformers make your hair look really pretty, but the curls never last long. any suggestions??
I got my starter kit yesterday and actually had to search your site to find a video on putting one in, lol. After seeing it in action, the process was a breeze and I'm loving the curls! I ended up using all 46 that came in the kit with no problem.

Thanks anonymous! I will give them a try.
I just bought a trial pack and they are amazing, Thanks for this post! I am now going to be a regular curlformer, LOL
@ Stacy, I saw curlformers on here http://www.mariposa-import.eu/index.html while I was looking for something COMPLETELY different
You are right on time with your post. I was just thinking about purchasing these. Your hair looks wonderful!
Hiyah ladies 🙂
I remember liking the results, but definitely not enjoying putting them in. Yes, the hair will tangle if you're not careful…hell, it'll tangle if you're careful! I had to buy some extras I'm pretty sure to cover my head. I'm fearful now that my hair may be a bit too long–I was outgrowing them last year.
MissCurly, I'll definitely check out the long, thin ones!
oh, and no, I don't sit under a dryer, but if I was in a hurry (or had really thick hair), I probably would!
hth!
nik
I have wanted to try these for so long. Thanks for sharing they look good on you – but everything does! Great shine!
These look pretty interesting. May have to give these a try. ~KF519
Does anyone know where I can find these in the U.K? I'm really stuck, 7 months into my transition and wanna look cute 🙁 My mama lives in Florida but says her local Sally has closed down 🙁 booo.
I've been trying to hold out as long as possible. I don't think I can go any longer. After seeing your results I am getting those jokers!! I can't wait! I just moved out of the wettest climate imaginable to one similar to yours, too. You're right about it CN, "It's curlformers time!"
I think I will definitely give these a try when I get some more length. Love your results.
CN – I'm wondering if one box will be sufficient for my hair. Does one box cover your entire head or did you have to purchase more curlformers??
I just bought these a few weeks ago. I had trouble getting them in and eventually gave up. But these pics make me want to give it another shot.
I've always seen these in the store and thought they looked like too much trouble. But they seem to really leave your hair smooth and neat like a press n curl as you mentioned.
So, the hair won't get tangled when you pull it through the rod? That would be my biggest concern. Becase then I'd just get frustrated, quit, walk out the bathroom in a huff and never pick up my curl formers again. lol
I was JUST telling my friend how much I wanted to try these. Thanks for the post, I'll be buying them in the near future!
These look really interesting. I think I need my hair to grow a little longer first though. Oh and get enough money to afford enough to cover my WHOLE head. Yeah, I was wondering if you have to sit undereneath a dryer as well…since I don't own (nor do I feel like investing in) one.
Cool! Make sure you show us what they look like! I may have to try these. did you sit under the dryer as well?
Curlformers Yea! lol I feel like the curlformer Queen. I have been rockin curlformers for the past two years now. They're great for taking the heat and stress of your hair. They's helped my hair grow. I love using the long and thin ones it gives you cool waves vs the long and wide for me those were to shirley temple. Plus it's easy and fast to put them in. I've been doing it for so long it takes me less than 30 minutes to put in the curlformers.
Alright enough of my infomercial………….: )
I wonder if those will work on small loc's?
Wow, that is beautiful!
Thanks for keeping me informed on ways to style my natural hair.
I'm still on my journey though, so wish me luck! 10 months in!

I haven't had an opportunity to try these just yet, but I plan on purchasing the curlformers and trying them out. I prefer to keep my hair in curls, so these are definitely right up the alley.
I actually bought the beginner's box set of these last month. I'm waiting to get my kinky twists next week to experiment with the curlformers and see how they turn out! 🙂
