Hola Chicas,
While on my way back from an 8 hour road trip (I have something random to share about that too…remind me!), an old friend from NaturallyCurly.com emailed me. You probably know her as ItsMsHeatherNicole, the curly (and hilarious) youtube star, with a southern twang. We’ve been online bffs since ’05, and needless to say, I was delighted to see her name in my inbox…at 1am no less.
In short, she was giving me the heads up that she had tried the Twist-n-Curl, liked it, and made a vid about it. So, I thought it’d be cool to try her signature style too..The Curly Fro!
This morning, after ensuring my hair was completely dry, I took them down one by one. I un-twisted, fluffed, and was pleasantly surprised! It was shiny, fluffy, moisturized, and defined. I didn’t know what to expect–I didn’t have high hopes because of my hair type. In the end, I’m happy to add this style to my arsenal. It will come in handy when I don’t have time to wet my hair. It’s also a great primer for a stretched out up-do. I probably won’t do it too often, because I don’t think my hair likes to be manipulated dry.
Here are the specifics:
- I carefully sectioned out the front and secured the rest of my hair in a scrunchy. I finger detangled a bit, and sprayed it 1-3 times with water. I then detangled with my wide tooth Jilbere comb from the ends to the roots. Finally, I sprayed SIF into my palms (about 5-7 sprays), thoroughly applied it to the section, and twisted. I added Oyin to the ends.
- Repeated the instructions above with a section at the crown, one on each side above my ears, and 3 in the back.
- Rolled the twists from tip to root and secured by folding the flexi rods (shaped like a z).
- Slept…comfortably too!
- Unrolled, separated twists, and fluffed!

The Take Down

The Results
Randomness…blast from the past:
Eight hours is a long time to be in the car…especially if you had just driven 8 hours the day before…through the mountains, in the rain!
During the last 4 hour stretch, the hubs and I scanned the radio (this is SO much fun), and sang along (albeit poorly) with such artists as Journey, Queen, Elton, and Prince. Finally, he broke out his IPhone and shuffled it–the first song that came on was Milli Vanilli ‘Baby Don’t Forget My Number’! After my initial ‘uh, WTF?!’ reaction, we discussed the phenomenon that was Milli Vanilli and how most of what I remember was actually In Living Color’s portrayal of them. So, we did a Youtube search and found the video. OMG…classic. Who the hell was their choreographer?!
The moral of this story? Don’t have one…but we definitely laughed until we cried, and Milli Vanilli are now runner ups for our 2009 Halloween Costumes…
Later Gators,
Nik
Your hair is beyond beautiful! I love it! I am in love with the curly fro!
oh wow, great hair 🙂 and this hairstyle is beautiful, can't wait to get to get to this length to try but til then 🙂 transition I am.
I'm truly a CurlyNikki fan! Your hair is ridiculously, amazingly beautiful! Wear it proud.
Beautiful reults Nik! ITA with Terra, you must share your skin secrets. Thanks for the wonderful blog.

Flexi rods give me the same look as Curlformers…not bantu knots. Bantu knot out is similar to my TnC–still a kinky/curly texture, that looks huge! The flexis and CFs give me a press and curled look…I'm not a huge fan of that, which is why I pull it up.
i always use the blue or red flexirods for my TnC …and the sleeping is definitely more comfy than magnetic rollers!
Hi Nikki!
I was wondering if the flexi rods has a different outcome than bantu knots? Thanks
I know what you mean about combing while dry though…I'm scared! lol But I love this style. MV! Brings back memories! lol ~KF519
LOL! I heart Milli Vanilli 🙂
Terra D, I will do my updated routine…I've changed things up a tiny bit. Thanks!
lol@Tina! Wow, I knew about the scandal, but I didnn't know they were asking folks if they wanted their money back.
JE, girl, I don't have any BC pics cause I've never BCed! I've never had a relaxer in my life. I wore my hair pressed and curled for 20 years of my life though. There are lots of pre-henna pics under MY Hair tab and the Henna category. Henna has weighed my hair down, but it hasn't changed the shape of my curl…it just shrinks less. I was 4a/3c before henna, and 4a/3c now…just smoother and it hangs longer. Go to the tab 'About Me' for my natural hair journey.
@Keeta, aren't you loving that vid! OMG! I just watched it again. Entertaining.
@Anon, no probs on the henna vid 🙂 Makes it easier for you and me! I'll check out that conditioner! Where did you buy it?!
Hi Nikki,
Your hair looks amazing. Heather's a lot of fun… By the way, i wanted to thank you for posting that henna tutorial, I can't begin to tell you how great my hair feels and twist and curl has been a great help as well…
I stumbled upon this product, Deep Penetrating Conditioner for Damaged Hair by deity America, and i wanted to know if you'd heard of it.
here's the link, http://www.deityusa.com/product.php?productid=16150&cat=249&page=1
thanks again. cheers
Love your results and SMH @ Milli Vanilli lol
OK… #1 Ur hair looks great! #2 Umm… this Milli Vinilli flashback is hee-larry-us!!!! Wow… LOL
CurlyNikki!!!
Would you say that the constant use of henna has weighed your hair down even more, or loosened your curl pattern? Also, I don't think you've ever posted any pictures of your hair post-BC, or early on in your natural journey How long did you transition? Heck, could you just make a post about that, with pictures? I feel like it would help me in my transition =)
Thanks
That fro is hot!! I love when my hair is big like that…usually after a braidout.

OMG! Maria, you are hilarious!!! I had to read your comment to my hubby…too funny.
I love HN too, she rocks!
LOL! Thanks ladies! Milli and Vanilli had quite a few good songs…this one included. The beat is a bit addictive 🙂
If we go as them for Halloween, I'll def. post pics!
Thanks Maya! It's probably a combo between my hair texture (fine, wavy, lays down…doesn't grow out), and the henna (which smooths and weighs it down further). That's why my hopes for this style weren't high–my hair flops down instead of standing up. I'd definitely opt for a fierce, tall Curly Fro, instead of a floppy one, lol!
Thanks again ladies!

Nikki, don't laugh but I actually saw Milli Vanilli in concert back in 1989! LOL I was like wow they're so talented, how come they never run out of breath? Yeah well… Anyway I'll always love that album.
Your hair looks lovely. HeatherNicole is so cute with her accent.
your hair looked great!!! How come your hair always looks like it has been straightened then curled? I've been wondering this for a long time. Is it the henna
Lovely as always 😀
You and your hair truly stunning. I'm definitely going to give the HeatherNicole a try!
I'm loving it! Gorgeous curly fro nik!
Okay..I'm gonna fess'.I had the CD AND the cassette!! LOL! When that whole Grammy thing broke, BMG records (remember 10ct=10 CDs?) sent me a letter asking me if I wanted my money back. I loved, "Girl You Know It's True". Even after I found out they didn't sing a bit of it. That poor guy, Rob committed suicide a few years back…never got over the whole thing.
That video made my day! And yes they were cool when they came out. Well, at least in my neighborhood.
So shiny! I'm loving your results, and your BLAST FROM THE PAST. I was a HUGE Milli Vanilli fan, even after the scandal. They had good songs.
LOL! Nikki your site is the best. The Curly Fro is a good look for you, and you are absolutely hysterical. Thanks for all you do!
I'm too young to remember Milli Villi but I am LMAO!!!! They are hilarious, I love love love the choreographing!
Your hair does look cute! Also, your skin looks great too, you should do an updated skin regimen! Thanks for the hilarious video.
This look is cool on you, Nikki.
About Milli Vanilli, they became the butt of jokes even after their Grammy win. I will (sheepishly) cop to loving and actually buying "Blame It On the Rain." Though it was later learned neither (Rob nor Fab) actually sang the lead vocals, but they had the right look to sell at that time.
I have some good (& corny) memories that were made to a M-V soundtrack. (May Rob, who passed away a few years ago, rest in peace.)
girl, you're a trip, and the hair is fab! And Milli Vanilli were cool!
Your hair looks amazing as usual! And you and 'the hubs' are too funny, I can't wait to see your Mill Vanilli picstures!
LOL!!!!
If you and your hubby does dress up as Milli Vanilli you HAVE TO post pics! That would classic and win FAV costumes by almost anybody.
lol @ Milli Vanilli…those 2 were characters. Your hair came out lovely!
