In the past I couldn’t help but get this overwhelming feeling of guilt when I wore my hair loose.
It’s fun when it’s down and out, but the fear of what happens afterward is usually in the back of my mind. Dreading the long detangling session. The fear of dryness and breakage. The fear or damaging my hair and having to start all over.

I don’t know about you, but I used to feel really guilty about wearing my hair out. I felt like it was impossible to retain length and have healthy hair if I wore it down. Lots of people, including myself, had major success with length retention when I wore two strand twists. It took everything in me to risk it all and enjoy the hard work I had put into my natural hair.
Half way through last year, I started wearing my hair loose more often, still utilizing protective and low manipulation styling, but giving myself, what felt like, more access to my hair.
Long Lasting Twist Outs & Braid outs
- Being able to maintain twist outs, braid outs etc. for at least 3 days.
- I maintain at night using the pineapple method without re twisting.
- The smaller the twists and the longer you leave them in, the longer the style will last.
- In the end low manipulation has been key for me.
Bunning
I usually wash my hair every two weeks, so on the second week, I like to do a few cute buns. I switch it up between a high and low bun. This still allows me to wear my hair loose, but utilize protective styling.
Wash and Go
Wash and gos are always great when I am able to maintain them for about 3-5 days. It’s low manipulation, and I get to enjoy my natural curls. Even though most of my journey I have been comfortable with heat stretching, I am getting more comfortable with the wash and go.
In the end I want to be able to enjoy my experience. Even though I am on a healthy hair journey, it’s nice to enjoy my progress and all of the hard work!
