My name is Morenike and I’m from Detroit. I big chopped 2/2011.
How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural all of my life. I decided to transition once I got tired of my heat damage and wanted to do twists and braids. My ends were so damaged they didn’t curl anymore.
What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I started watching youtube videos and wanted to start wearing my hair in its natural state again. As a child, I wore braids and twists all of the time. I transitioned for about 7 months and then out of nowhere I decided to big chop.
How would you describe your hair?
My hair is thick, coarse and curly.
What do you love most about your hair?
I love the thickness and volume of my hair.
What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
To be honest, each stage of the journey passes by really quickly. I barely remember when my hair was short. I’m just anxious for it to be LONG!
What are some of your favorite hairstyles?
Braid outs and twist and curls.
What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
I get a lot of compliments from family and friends. I haven’t gotten any negative reactions as far as I can remember.
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
Right now I co-wash or shampoo and deep condition once a week. A month ago I started a new workout routine so I only style once per week. I usually do some sort of protective style then wear it out over the weekend. My hair is very dry so I love any thick butter product. My hair loves Healthy Hair Butter by Carols daughter, Quemet biologics Amla & Olive oil heavy cream, Marguerites Magic by Carols Daughter and my absolute fav is my homemade shea butter whip.
