Were you a slow transitioner or a Big
Chopper & why? (tell us your natural hair journey)
Chopper & why? (tell us your natural hair journey)
I was a big chopper TWICE! My last
relaxer was in August ’11 I was in the process of growing out a Mohawk when my
hair just started shedding excessively! I had never had this problem before and
I didn’t relax my hair often so I contributed it to stress. So stress on top of
my hair falling out was making me even more stressed. In Oct ’11 I BC’d and it was amazing! There’s nothing like
sayin “eff it! Imma do what I want” 🙂 but in March I was tryna be
grown and wanted something new for my 30th bday so I went blonde! Aaaaah! I
loved it but it took away all my curl so later that month I did another BC…

Had you always embraced your texture?
I always knew I had nice hair, but I had been getting relaxers for about 20 years, so I had no idea what my real texture and curl pattern was like. Even when I look at old pics my hair was always blown out, so I’m loving what my hair is doing now.

How did family and friends react to your
decision to go natural? How did they react to the new you? What was your
response to them?

response to them?
No one really said anything negative
they just didn’t think that I could do it because I loved my hair straight. I
had a lot of support and have even convinced some of them to partake in the
returning to natural journey…Go meee!!

Describe your hair (fine or
coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is thick but not extremely if
that makes sense:/ its a good amount of hair tho. It’s not fine or coarse I’m
somewhere in the middle.

What’s your current hair routine?
How often do you wash, condition, and style? favorite products! Deets!

I cowash 2-3 times a week. I only
shampoo my hair when I am doing a DC and that’s at least twice a month because
I have permanent color. I like to cowash with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Aussi Moist, Tresemme Naturals (before they changed it now I’m scurred) and Natures Gate Herbal Condish. The only cleansing conditioner I use is As I Am Coconut Cowash, and to shampoo I use As I Am cleansing pudding. I love organic coconut oil and
EVOO! For moisture, I use Kercare Naturals Butter Cream and for twists/braid
outs I use their twist & define cream.

How do you maintain your hair at
night?
night?
At night it just depends on what my
hair is doing. If I’m rockin’ a twist or braid out I retwist, wrap a scarf
around, and sleep on my satin pillow case. If I’m doin the W&G, I just go to
sleep and worry about it in the A.M. I don’t stress about it too much. On
bad hair days, I will whip out a scarf and rock it with some big earrings!

How do you maintain healthy length?
I just try to listen to my hair. When
I’m not doin right Thelma (my fro) will let it be known! I know if I’m taking
care of her she will grow and be beautiful. I try not to worry about the
“omg I’ve been natural this long and my hair is only here” type stuff
cause I will go cray!

What’s the best thing about being curly?
The best thing about being
curly…EVERYTHING! The journey, the struggle (twa), the style, the attitude,
the confidence, and having a sense of sisterhood with other curlies because we
all know what its like to go through this journey of embracing what’s real and
not conforming to what society’s opinion of what beauty is.
