Twilisha Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!

Were you a slow transitioner or a Big Chopper & why? What
was your journey like?
I’ve been natural since I was 13.  I guess I transitioned with braids (extensions
I wore for about 18 months after my last relaxer)

Had you always embraced your texture?
I was always natural until I was about 12,
and I wanted to be like my girlfriends who had relaxers.  Once I got it, I realized I didn’t like
the finality of having my hair chemically straightened.  I installed the braids, grew my natural
hair back out and never looked back.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
What was your response to them?
I’ve never been concerned about that.  I’ve always been able to make my hair
look good regardless of if it’s relaxed, natural, braids, heat styled, so people
generally respond to me and my hairstyles positively.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick,
highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair strands are fine, the density is not
thick or thin, I guess just medium.
I think my hair is of low porosity, it doesn’t take very long to dry
after soaking.

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash,
condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I wash my hair, when I feel it needs it,
that’s USUALLY once/week, but sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.  I usually style it 2-3 times/week.  I like the As I Am line Cleansing
Pudding and Creamy Coconut Co-Wash.
My hair loves coconut oil, especially in warmer weather.  In the winter I make a mixture with raw
Shea butter and coconut oil (and a host of other oils) I’m still experimenting
with styling products to give me better hold, things have just been too
crunchy, too waxy, giving me white flakes on the takedown…I’m not there yet
with stylers.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle
inspiration?
I wear a lot of twists outs because it’s
just a natural progression from the wash to the twists.  It allows me to keep my strands
organized, and helps cut down on frizz.
My curls don’t clump well so wearing twist outs kind of encourages the
strands to be friends.

Who is your curl crush?
Right now I’m really digging Mini Marley’s
hair (YouTuber) it just looks so shiny and healthy!

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I pineapple and bonnet usually.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I TRY to protective style (not really my
strong suit, as I struggle with needing to access my scalp often) I always wash
in sections; I comb with wide tooth combs, and always work from ends to
roots.  I just try my best to treat
my hair gently, and not abuse it.

What’s the best thing about being curly?
I love my big hair.  The bigger I can get it the
better.  I love that I can heat
style my hair if I want a straight look and I don’t have to stay that way
forever.  I love that my hair is
healthier than ever now that I’ve cut back on the heat styling (maybe 5-6/year
as opposed to every week when I FIRST went back to natural)
