Kaprice Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!

My name is Kaprice Harrell and I’m from a small town called Kokomo, IN but I’ve been in Indianapolis, IN since 2009. I’m a freelance makeup artist here as well. I’ve been freelancing since 2008. I’m also a proud mother to a 7 year old boy. He’s my everything.
Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I decided to go natural in September 2010 and I transitioned until June 2011becasue I was scared too big chop. Eventually I got tired of dealing with two textures.

Had you always embraced your texture?
The answer is no. This whole standard beauty thing had me all confused about how I thought my hair was supposed to look. I see beauty in all textures. I don’t care how kinky or loose it is, it’s beautiful.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
I was in college at the time and a few girls in my class were natural and their hair was so pretty and full. Initially, I was like “WTHECK are y’all thinkin?” I said that because I never even considered going natural. Growing up with a relaxer, I was scared to know how my own hair looked (sad right?). So, I jumped online and started researching on YouTube. I’m a YouTube FREAKAZOID and I’m always looking on there and seeing what’s new with hair and things like that. I ran across Hair Journeys and fell in love. I transitioned just because it was a comfort blanket for me. I needed to keep my scraggly little perm twigs on for as long as possible, lol. I was like, okay, I LOVE my hair and I’m cutting this mess off. Of course, my mother looked at me like I was crazy for cuttin my hair off. I told her “don’t believe me, just watch”…lol. Not really, but kinda. I cut about 6 inches off and rocked a TWA for a little bit. I wore sew’ins for a long time after that.
Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
I would describe my hair as a NATURAL HAIR MELTING POT! lol It’s a little bit of everything honey! Kinky, curly and everything in between, and I LOVE it all. I think my hair is more like 4a, but I don’t know.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
The craziest thing I did to my natural hair was bleach it. I didn’t know what I was doing and it kinda fried it. No, I DID fry it. I wanted to be a blonde so bad, ahaha! Today, my hair is blonde but I did it the right way this time. I’m enjoying it too!
What’s your biggest hair related regret?
One day, I pressed my hair out and I turned the heat up too high and heat damaged the whole crown of my hair. I thought that it would revert and waited exactly 16 weeks (that’s what Instagram said) before I realized it wasn’t coming back. So I cut about 5 inches off my crown in January 2013. I didn’t think twice about it at the time, but eventually I started to regret my decision. It had to be done though.

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
Honestly, I don’t have a commited routine right now. However, I do try to wash every week and half and deep condition. I use Herbal Essences Hydrating Shampoo and deep condition with Aussie Moist Conditioner. After that, I detangle with Kinky Curly Knot today. Finally, depending on what I’m doing, I’ll do the LOC Method with JBCO and Elasta QP Mango Butter Moisturizer.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
I have so many favorite hairstyles its crazy! I literally go nuts if I have to keep a hairstyle too long. I like protective styles like Marley Twists and Box Braids but I usually end up missing my hair and only keeping them in for a, what seems like forever, month. I’m usually just about that #bunlife though.

Who is your curl crush?
My hair crush would have to be ChimeEdwards. I think my hair will look like hers when it gets longer. I’m excited. I try to find people that have similar hair to mine.
How do you maintain your hair at night?
I just tie it down with a satin scarf most nights. Especially, when I press it out or it’ll be a frizzy mess. (Kinda like now…)
How do you maintain healthy length?
I usually keep my hair moisturized. That’s like a golden rule for me and I suppose that’s what’s keeping it healthy. I get my ends trimmed like twice a year. I hate split ends so sometimes I’ll be at work and I’ll just be sitting there and just get to snippin if I see any. I try not to stress myself out over it too much. (that and I go cross eyed if I do it too long lol.) Folks get scissor happy, so I try to do what I can on my own.

What’s the best thing about being natural?
AHHHH, THE VERSATILITY OF COURSE! I love HUGE hair! Before going natural, I’d always rock a big weave or wig and I’d just love it. I never knew that I could get my real hair to do the same thing. When I want it sleek, I press it out. I love being able to change it up when I want to. When I had a relaxer, I’d try to do a wash and go look by putting gel in my hair and sitting under a dryer and alternating between the two until it looked “curly”. Needless to say, I looked a hot mess.
