Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I was a transitioner. I transitioned for a year and a half until I had the courage to Big Chop. I had quite the journey. It was very fustrating and challenging times. The day I big chopped was on a wash day, and I remember being so fed up and crying to my mom. She encouraged me to take the initiative and big chop. The best thing I could have done. Three years later, here I am happier than ever!

Had you always embraced your texture?
After I big chopped, no. Not at first anyway. I really didn’t understand my texture. All I know is I had these beautiful wavy curls that I’ve never had before. But didn’t know what to do with them so I would hide them under wigs and braids. Now, I fully embrace my texture.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
My family supports me with anything I do. Although they didn’t really know the first thing about “natural hair,” they never discouraged me in any way. My friends were definitely supportive. My best friend and I actually made the decision to go natural together. It was good to have that extra person going through these struggles with me.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is more on the course side. I have very thick hair. My hair absorbs water very fast and maintains moisture very well.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
My undercut was the craziest thing I’ve done to my hair. It was something I’ve always wanted to do, and I decided to go to my cousins shop and get it done. I loved it, but now I’m ready to have a full head of curls so I’m currently a year into growing it back, which is very hard by the way lol.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
My biggest regret happened when I was transitioning. I remember this like it was just yesterday. I wanted to straighten my hair. It turned out bad, so half way in I got so frustrated and just started chopping my hair off, but only one one side. So, now I have a lop sided fro. You live and you learn right?

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
Although I don’t have a specific wash day, I tend to wash my hair every week or whenever I feel necessary. I deep condition EVERY week; every time I wash my hair I deep condition. My go to style is a twist out. I only shampoo twice a month.
-Cowash( Trader Joes Nourish and Spa)
-Deep conditioner (SheaMoisture JBCO)
-LOC Method!!
-Leave in (Knot Today)
-Oil ( One N Only Argan Oil)
-Cream ( LottaBody Curl and Style milk)
-Styler (LottaBody custard, or good old Ecco Styler)

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hair style is a twist out picked to capacity. I get inspirations from YouTube, hair blogs, and from Instagram, Google, etc.

Who is your curl crush?
Naptural85 from YouTube. I love everything about her.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
Most of the time I have a twist out. At night I will put in about 8 big twist, and I wrap my hair in a bonnet or sleep on my satin pillow case. If I am wearing a wash and go, I pineapple now that my hair is longer.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I give all my credit to deep conditioning and being consistent with the LOC method. Moisture is everything, and health definitely over length. I make sure to stay consistent with DCing and LOCing and the length will soon follow.

What’s the best thing about being natural?
The versatility and the confidence I have gained. There are so many things I can do with my hair that I never thought was possible. I get compliment all the time and I love every bit of it. I’m so confident now. I LOVE MY HAIR! It’s something I’m very proud of.
