“We are deeply saddened to announce Sharon Jones passed away today after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.
Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.”
Jones was first diagnosed with stage two pancreatic cancer in 2013. Her gallbladder, the head of her pancreas and 18 inches of her intestine would be removed shortly after.
In 2014, Jones was nominated for her first Grammy, ‘Best R&B Album’ for “Give The People What They Want.” Jones had a relatively late start in her career, releasing her first record “Damn It’s Hot” at the age of 40. In 2002 she would go on to release her debut album “Dap Dippin’ With Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.” Earlier this year, a documentary titled Miss Sharon Jones! was released.
After news surfaced of Jones passing away, celebrities such as Questlove, Chaka Khan and Leon Rogers remembered her legacy.
