Black-ish fans! The moment we’ve been waiting for has arrived! Remember, we happily reported back in April that the very talented and inspirational Yara Shahidi had gotten accepted into every single college she applied to.
At that time, she hadn’t yet revealed which campus she was choosing as her undergraduate dwellings. Well, the time has come and true to any millennial, she revealed her choice on social media! The young TV star and model revealed on Instagram, that she is going to be rocking Crimson and heading to Harvard University!
Shahidi will be joining the ranks of fellow Harvard alum and former first lady who also wrote Shahidi’s recommendation letter, Michelle Obama! Obama received her JD at Harvard law school. “She is very amazing and such a supporter, which is something very surreal to say,” said Shahidi to W Magazine, in regards to Mrs. Obama.
Another similarity she has with the Obamas is the fact that Malia Obama will be attending the ivy league institution this fall after deferring for year, also known as a “gap year.” And it looks like Shahidi will be doing the same, which she told PEOPLE last October, noting, “I know when Malia Obama announced [she was deferring], she got a lot of slack, but I feel like what’s interesting is I know so many people that are deferring. It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work,” Shahidi said.
Smart move, to be honest! Given the fact that she began her career as a child, it makes sense to go the “gap year” route. “I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities, so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path,” she continued.
Regardless, Shahidi definitely has her eye on the ivy league prize! “I think no matter what, I know that I want to go to college. I know that I’m going to defer a year and I’m willing to have a more unorthodox college experience, but at a certain point I want to be on a campus,” she noted.
Congrats to Yara Shahidi! With her new Freeform Black-ish spin-off (College-ish) set to premiere in 2018, she certainly has enriching experiences ahead of her!
