The symptoms

Zara describes her symptoms very clearly for us. They included:

  • Incredible itching
  • A smooth, raw scalp
  • A whiter scalp
  • Extreme irritation when her scalp was wet
  • Small red bumps

Plus, she appeared to be going bald at the top center of her head.

How it started

In the video, Zara tries to pinpoint the origin of the infection. She is able to rule out the products she was using when she first noticed the intense itching.

She does suspect it happened weeks before that while she was getting her hair styled for a commercial. It seemed to be a combination of

  • Tools used in her hair that were not hers and she isn’t sure how well sanitized they were.
  • Her scalp being under quite a bit of stress, increased tension, and possibly having tiny cuts from styling.

Added to all that, she immediately went on a trip and was unable to properly clean her hair and scalp for a while. AND, while on the trip, her scalp was wet often for extended periods of time.

Zara admits it all makes quite the recipe for a scalp disaster! And, that’s exactly what she got.

What she did about it

After the initial freaking out, she called on her family for help. They immediately looked at herbal remedies and decided on neem (dogonyaro) which they had growing at home. It’s a potent, traditional remedy for scalp fungus and other scalp ailments. Zara used a neem preparation on her scalp to get some relief.

Next came modern medicine. She got confirmation it was a fungal infection and ketoconazole (a powerful anti-fungal) was prescribed for her in shampoo, cream, and tablet form – yeah, it was that serious.

So, along with the prescription medicine, Zara developed her own series of natural recipes that changed her scalp and her hair forever. Those recipes and more are now in her Recipe Bible which anyone can purchase (link in video!) She has tried and tested them all in her hair and they worked for her thick, coily, type 4 hair and sensitive scalp.

Head on over to the video where Zara details the regimen (home remedies + prescription) she followed religiously to rid her scalp of the infection.

Zara also made sure to wear her super-thick natural hair in braids to make it easier to get to her scalp. (Really, Zara’s type 4 hair is so long, so thick, and so healthy-looking that many people actually assume it’s not her real hair but… it is!!)
Even after moving past the scalp fungus episode, she still focuses on styles that keep her scalp ventilated, accessible, and easier to air dry. She wears her natural hair in braids often (as shown here).
All-in-all, while going bald via scalp fungus was definitely a negative experience, Zara sees a positive side – what she has learned and is now able to share.
