3 Best Hair Fertilizers for Growing Long Natural Hair

by Team CurlyNikki

Remember when growing long hair meant going to the beauty supply store and buying that ONE thing somebody’s auntie swore by? Not a $70 scalp serum. Not a ten-step routine. Not yet another bottle of oil because somebody on TikTok grew six inches overnight, with pics and vids to prove it and it’s definitely not AI, maybe lol.

We’re talking about hair fertilizer.

Those old-school tubes and bottles with names so serious, you almost expected your hair to start growing while you stood in the checkout line. Virgin Hair Fertilizer. Wild Growth Hair Oil. Wild growth?! I’ll take 10, please. Please wildly grow… In the early natural hair movement days, we affectionately just referred to her as WGO (which I pronounced wigo lol).

And now we’ve got modern rosemary, castor, and batana blends competing for the same space on our bathroom shelves. But are these hair fertilizers actually worth buying? And which one makes the most sense for YOUR natural hair today?

Let’s revisit two old-school favorites and one newer contender.

The Best Hair Fertilizers Compared

ProductBest ForFormula
Virgin Hair Fertilizer, 125gDry scalp and traditional grease loversThick peppermint pomade… think Vicks Vapor rub lol
Wild Growth Hair OilDry, tangling natural hair (MUST TRY!)Botanical oil blend- easy to apply and has a concentrated nozzle
Vital Affair Rosemary Hair Oil BlendModern botanical oil routineRosemary, castor, batana, jojoba- this one will be extra familiar in consistency and application.

1. Virgin Hair Fertilizer, 125g

Best for: Women who still believe in the old-school scalp-grease routine.

This is the product that makes the entire article worth it.

Virgin Hair Fertilizer has that unmistakable throwback appeal: a thick for no reason, LOUD peppermint-scented scalp treatment with a reputation for helping women grow longer hair faster somehow. Defying all science and gravity. Read the reviews, ask your aunties. But more important, try it yourself.

Commonly listed ingredients include petrolatum, peppermint oil, lanolin, and herbal extracts.

The petrolatum and lanolin help soften skin and reduce moisture loss. The peppermint gives that recognizable cooling sensation.

But don’t confuse tingling with accelerated growth, please. Just like Noxema… when it starts tingling I immediately think, ‘that’s it! that’s the youth right there! that’s them fine lines leaving lol’. It’s not. But it’s a nice thought, and you know what, I’ll let you have it. Forget this whole paragraph :) *pulls out Will Smith’s Men In Black memory wiper thingy*.

The tingling means it’s working lol.

How to use it: Apply a small amount to a clean, comfortable scalp and massage gently. Start sparingly, especially if your scalp is sensitive.

The trade-off: It’s heavy, fragranced, and not ideal for everyone. Avoid irritated skin, and check the ingredients on your particular tube. I literally just put one in my cart to revisit again, again! I’ll report back when my hair is down my back haha!

2. Wild Growth Hair Oil

Best for: Natural hair that needs more softness, slip, and protection from breakage.

If Virgin Hair Fertilizer is the nostalgic scalp treatment, Wild Growth is the famous little bottle. WGO! This is a must try. If you’ve never owned a bottle, you’re tripping. Stop what you’re doing right now and go to the beauty supply. This is a right of passage, ma’am.

Its formula features coconut, olive, rice bran, pumpkin seed, and other botanical oils and extracts all in one bottle. It feeds your strands while nourishing and fertilizing your scalp. Your twists will thank you, too- way smoother feel, way less tangling. Which means… way less breakage. That’s more hair you get to keep right there!

How to use it: Shake well. Start with a few drops on damp, conditioned hair, concentrating on older lengths and ends. Adjust according to your hair’s density and tolerance for oils.

The trade-off: The concentrated formula can leave hair greasy if you use too much.

3. Vital Affair Rosemary Hair Oil Blend

Best for: Women curious about the newer generation of botanical hair oils.

Now for the modern challenger. The contender in the Rosemary shorts!

Vital Affair combines rosemary with castor, batana, jojoba, and other oils, plus biotin and vitamin E.

It’s a more contemporary take on the traditional hair oiling ritual.

Rosemary has attracted interest in hair-growth research, but evidence for this particular finished blend remains limited. And topical biotin isn’t a proven solution for ordinary hair loss.

What you’re buying here is primarily a rich conditioning oil that can help lubricate strands and improve their feel.

How to use it: Start with a small amount on the lengths or a patch-tested scalp application. Shampoo as needed to prevent buildup.

The trade-off: More ingredients don’t automatically mean more growth. If your hair is fine or easily weighed down, drive slow, homie.

So Which Hair Fertilizer Would We Buy?

For the old-school experience, Virgin Hair Fertilizer is the obvious choice. Hands down. I ordered one just now.

For natural hair that tangles and breaks during styling, we’d lean toward Wild Growth Hair Oil. Classic.

And if you want a newer rosemary-and-batana blend, Vital Affair is worth considering.

But don’t buy all three. Read the reviews. Listen for the whispers of your great-great grandma, and buy the one that chooses you lol. Use it consistently. Talk to your hair like a baby, like a plant, tell your edges they is beautiful, they is thick. But seriously, if you’re experiencing persistent thinning, bald patches, or excessive shedding, see a dermatologist rather than relying on oils alone.

CurlyNikki Says:

Some of these old-school products survived generations of beauty trends for a reason: THEY WORK. But the real goal isn’t to make your scalp defy life. If you can manage to keep what you’re growing, God will do the rest :) Chill. Breathe. Mind your business. Pray. Keep your hair in twists and your scalp fertilized, haha!
