3 Best Products for Natural Hair That Keeps Forming Single-Strand Knots
by Team CurlyNikki
You are minding your business, sliding your fingers down a perfectly good strand and then, BAM. Bead. And if you have a touch of my kind of obsessiveness, you reach for your hair shears and snip just above the little annoyance. But if the hair shears aren’t in arm’s reach (and most people’s aren’t lol) you may even be tempted to let your nails do the cutting.
Stop that, ma’am.
If you could then see that hair under a microscope, you’d be sick. TORN. Shredded. I’ve got a better solution for you.
First of all, what are single-strand knots? If you’ve been here the last 18 years, you know. If you’re knew, you know now- they form when coily hair shrinks up on itself, loves up on itself… as the hair dries in its natural state (rather than a stretched state), the ends curl around themselves. Now, I cannot promise to eliminate every fairy knot from a head of highly textured hair, but keeping the ends soft, lubricated, and a little more contained (think, twists), can dramatically reduce how much opportunity they have to tie themselves into microscopic contracts.
I can say that since I stopped relying on wash-and-gos as my style of choice, the knots also stopped. Wearing your hair gently heat-stretched, or in twists or braids, and even in braid-outs, or twist-n-curls (roller-set ends) will greatly reduce your need for the shears. Also, regular trims help as well. Here are some tried and true products to also help keep your ends moisturized (another main culprit- dryness) and in the clear.
| Pick | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream | Softening dry, knot-prone ends | $21 |
| Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter | Stretching + keeping ends grouped | $16.99 |
| Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade | Sealing the very ends | $14.99 |
Qhemet: when dryness is making the ends catch
Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream gives us lasting softness without going straight to the heaviest product in the cabinet. Concentrate it on damp ends, then twist or braid the section. Moisture helps, but keeping those ends from freelancing all day is what really changes everything.
Camille Rose: when the hair needs moisture plus a little stretch
Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter is richer and more style-focused. We like it when the knotting shows up after the hair shrinks all the way down and the ends start wrapping around themselves. Use it for juicy twists, gorgeous braid-outs or other stretched styles where the ends stay grouped instead of constantly rubbing against neighboring strands.

Oyin: when the last inch needs a little old-school protection
Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade is the sealer here. Rub the tiniest amount between the fingertips and glaze it over already-moisturized ends. This is especially good before bedtime or before tucking the hair into a high bun, or re-moisturizing and sealing the ends of your twists before bed. Pomade is not moisture, so do not put it on bone-dry ends and then come complaining to me.
Finally, if a knot is already extra present and bothering you, snip it cleanly with hair scissors instead of ripping it through the strand.
Takeaway: Single-strand knots thrive on dry, loose, shrunken ends. Moisturize them, give them a little slip, and stop letting them wander around unsupervised. They’ll love you back! Nikki says she hasn’t had a fairy knot in 10 years, and she used to keep them! Stretched styling for the win! She also recommends Soultanicals Can’t Believe It’s Knot Butta for ends that need slip, softness, and WEIGHT from the good stuff like shea butter, mango butter, and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Seal with the best! And of course, DAX!
