3 Best Sephora Products to Make Fine Hair Look Twice as Thick

by Team CurlyNikki

My natural hair is fine. VERY fine.

And after nearly two decades of experimenting with products, I’ve learned something: making fine hair LOOK thicker is a whole lot easier than actually making it thicker lol.

Especially when you’re working with fine 4A, 4B, or 4C strands that shrink up, clump together, and sometimes make a perfectly healthy head of hair look like there’s barely anything there!

The surprise? Some of my favorite thickening products weren’t even marketed specifically to Black women.

And one of them is supposed to be used with a blow-dryer. I use it for twists. Because apparently my hair doesn’t read directions.

These three Sephora finds are worth knowing about.

The Best Hair Thickening Products Compared

Living Proof Full Thickening Blow-Dry CreamFine strands and fuller-looking twistsThickening polymers and body- twists look and feel more substantial.

1. Living Proof Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray

Best for: Fine natural hair that needs instant volume.

This is one of my favorite shortcuts to bigger hair.

It’s a dry texturizing spray that uses volumizing polymers and oil-absorbing ingredients to add lift and separation without requiring another wash day.

And it isn’t just for straight hair!

On stretched natural hair, blowouts, and finished twist-outs, a little texture can make your style look dramatically fuller.

How to use: Shake, lift sections of dry hair, spray lightly from 6-10 inches away, and fluff.

Watch out: Too much can leave fine hair feeling coated. Start small.

2. Living Proof Full Thickening Blow-Dry Cream

Best for: Making fine strands and skinny twists look more substantial.

NOW LISTEN.

Living Proof says this cream can deliver 30% thicker-looking hair compared with untreated hair when used as directed.

Its thickening technology deposits microscopic material between strands, creating more body and separation. Amaranth peptides also contribute to the fuller-looking finish.

The directions say to blow-dry.

But I’ve used it while twisting damp natural hair, without heat, and my twists look FULLER.

Am I getting the manufacturer’s full claimed effect without blow-drying? I don’t know. But I know what I’m seeing in my mirror!

How to use: For the intended result, apply to damp hair and blow-dry. For my twist method, experiment with a small amount on damp sections and allow them to dry completely.

Watch out: Using it without heat is my personal styling experiment, not the manufacturer’s tested method.

3. COLOR WOW Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer

Best for: Fine hair that needs volume without heavy creams or butters.

This one is interesting because it’s a foam that creates fullness without relying on a thick, oily coating.

Its volumizing polymers add body and grip, and unlike many blowout products, COLOR WOW explicitly says you can air-dry it.

That makes it worth exploring for damp natural-hair styling.

How to use: Apply to damp hair, distribute evenly, and air-dry or blow-dry. Try it on a small section first to see how your curls respond.

Watch out: Volume and definition aren’t always the same thing. You may need to experiment to find your favorite finish.

CurlyNikki’s Other Tricks for Making Fine Hair Look Thicker

Stretch your hair. Banding, gentle tension, and stretching techniques can show more length and create a bigger silhouette.

Roll your ends. Curling the ends of twists can make a style appear fuller and more finished.

Try a little castor oil. On stretched hair, its thick consistency can give strands a more substantial feel. A LITTLE. We’re not frying chicken.

Consider henna. I’ve used henna for years, and it can make fine strands feel more substantial. Just remember that pure henna deposits lasting color.

And yes, yogurt masks. An old-school conditioning ritual! Enjoy the softness if your hair likes it, but yogurt isn’t proven to increase hair density, it will just look that way! Rinse that mess GOOOOD or you’ll smell bad lol.

CurlyNikki Says:

Fine hair doesn’t mean you can’t have BIG hair. Sometimes you just need the right product, a little stretching, and permission to use a blow-dry cream without actually blow-drying! Break them rules!
