How We Got the Jheri Curl Look on 4C Natural Hair Without Chemicals

Max is still in his Michael Jackson era, so of course he wanted to be him for Halloween AND he needed the jacket, and he needed the penny loafers, and he needed the jheri curl without the jheri lol. Without the chemicals. He wanted motion. He wanted to be able to throw his head back and feel some drama snap back with him.

So I had to dust off my skills and shingle his whole entire head (using S Curl No Drip Activator- a glorified curl definer + Eco Styler Max Hold– his name was on the jar haha- next time we will try Fantasia IC which I forgot existed until I revisited THIS POST with him yesterday), the night before his school project (where he is both being Michael Jackson and the curator of an MJ museum).

The rules are you don’t try a new style before something important, and you definitely don’t use a hard hold gel without ample hours… 2-3 business days to fully dry lol. We broke both rules, but God shined down on us, and after sitting under my soft bonnet dryer for a couple of hours, and sleeping in claw clips for stretch (1 in the front, two in the back- we left the crown alone), his 4c hair saw some actual hangtime this morning! We even laid his edges. Couldn’t tell him NOTHING.

He walked out of here jingling, clanging, belts, and buckles, and pins, and chains. Everything but the kitchen sink hanging off of him. He was so proud of his hair- how it can be tall and fro hawk, or hang like a textured mullet, as he called it.

I was beaming this morning. Happy because he is. Then I went to Mass. Then I came home. I’ve been quiet on here as I have to withdraw at times. That’s my calling. But I’m always here, counting the hours ’til the next Mass, writing, publishing, and praying for YOU. For everyone on the other side of this screen. I pray for you. I love you.

p.s. He told me this is his hair now. This is his look lol. I don’t know who is doing the 1-2 hour shingling session every week, tho. I’m looking for volunteers if you’re interested lol!
