3 Best Products for Natural Hair Thinning at the Temples During Menopause

by Team CurlyNikki

First, you notice your ponytail isn’t as thick.

Then you notice the little hairs around your temples aren’t filling in like they used to.

And one morning you pull your hair back…

WHEN DID MY EDGES MOVE BACK THERE?

If you’re in your 40s or 50s, hormonal changes may be contributing. But menopause isn’t the only possible explanation.

Years of tight buns, braids, extensions, or glued-down wigs can contribute to traction alopecia. Female-pattern hair loss can also affect the temples.

And certain inflammatory conditions cause permanent hair loss if they aren’t treated early.

So before you spend $80 on an edge-growth serum, let’s separate three things:

Regrowing hair. Concealing thinning. Preventing additional pulling.

They aren’t interchangeable.

The Best Products Compared

ProductBest ForWhat It Actually Does

Kitsch Satin ScrunchiesWomen who wear their hair pulled backLess abrasive hair fastening

1. Women’s Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Foam

Best for: Women diagnosed with female-pattern hair loss.

Women’s Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Foam is a once-daily topical treatment containing 5% minoxidil.

Unlike a cosmetic edge serum, minoxidil has clinical evidence supporting its use for female-pattern hair loss.

But here’s the important part.

It’s labeled for hereditary thinning on the top of the scalp, not every possible cause of disappearing edges.

Temple loss can result from traction alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, or other conditions requiring a different treatment.

That’s why I’d want a dermatologist to identify the cause before assuming minoxidil belongs on my hairline.

Results generally take months, not weeks. Some women experience temporary increased shedding early in treatment.

Continued use is necessary to maintain its benefits.

And it shouldn’t be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

2. Color Wow Root Cover Up

Best for: Making sparse temples look fuller immediately.

Sometimes you need an answer for tomorrow morning, not six months from now.

Color Wow Root Cover Up is a mineral-based color powder that temporarily disguises visible scalp and sparse roots.

The brand’s website lists thousands of customer reviews, including users who describe the product as useful for thin areas and root coverage.

Its shades include black, dark brown, and medium brown.

For natural hair, I’d match the powder to the root color and use the small brush to press it gently into visible scalp areas.

Don’t sweep it all over your baby hairs.

The goal is a believable shadow, not a solid painted hairline.

This is purely cosmetic. It won’t regrow anything.

But if your biggest immediate concern is seeing scalp through a formerly full hairline, it provides a practical solution.

3. Kitsch Satin Sleep Scrunchies

Best for: Women who still need to wear their hair up without constant pulling.

If your edges are already fragile, a tight elastic can make an existing problem worse.

Kitsch Satin Scrunchies provide a smoother fabric-covered fastening option.

The brand has thousands of customer ratings across its satin scrunchie range.

But please understand the distinction.

Satin doesn’t make a tight ponytail safe.

If you’re wrapping that scrunchie around your hair four times and pulling everything backward until your eyebrows lift, you’ve missed the point.

Wear looser, lower-tension styles. Avoid pulling directly on thinning temples.

And give your edges a break from heavy extensions or slicked-back hairstyles.

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

If the thinning is progressing, your scalp feels sore or itchy, or your hairline is visibly receding, make an appointment with a dermatologist experienced in Black hair.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia and traction-related hair loss can cause permanent damage. Early treatment matters.

And if thinning begins in the center of your scalp, ask about central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or CCCA.

The right strategy depends on the cause.

Treat female-pattern hair loss when diagnosed. Conceal what you want to conceal. Stop unnecessary tension.

But don’t let another bottle of edge oil delay treatment for hair you’re actively losing.
