Homemade Sulfate-Free Shampoo for Your Natural Hair!

How to Make Shampoo Without Sulfates

Concerns about chemicals and their negative long-term effects on the human body have led some people to question the safety of their cosmetics and beauty products. Primary Information Services reports that sodium sulfate, an ingredient found in beauty products, is a derivative of sulfuric acid. Preparing your own beauty products, including your own shampoos, will help reduce your family’s exposure to chemicals such as sodium sulfate.

What You’ll Need

  • ¼ cup of distilled water
  • ¼ cup of castile soap
  • ½ tsp. of vegetable oil
  • Measuring cup
  • Whisk
  • Plastic bottles


  1. Pour ¼ cup of distilled water into a large measuring cup. Add ¼ cup of castile soap to the distilled water.
  2. Combine the two ingredients together with a whisk. Stir in ½ tsp. of vegetable oil.
  3. Perform a final mixing with the whisk to combine the vegetable oil with the distilled water and castile soap. Pour the contents of the measuring cup into a plastic bottle.


Do not forget to label your shampoos after preparing them. Use a waterproof marker to write directly on the bottle, or purchase waterproof labels.


  • Choose plastic bottles with squeeze tops for easy application.
  • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the homemade shampoo to create a pleasing scent.
  • Castile soap is available in grocery stores, pharmacies and online.
