Does Drinking Alcohol Hurt Hair Growth?

If you are having a moderate amount of alcohol, you should be fine, but there are still some things to know to protect your hair. Alcohol in large amounts can, in fact, disrupt hair growth. When you drink a lot of alcohol on a regular basis or in a short time frame, the body can only metabolize so much of the alcoholic content, and the left over is what is known as acidic waste. This waste is high in acid and the body has to use proteins to break it down enough for the body to expel it from your system. This is done in order to keep the natural pH balance of the human body in check. When these protein resources are being used to complete this process, your hair will have less protein left over to generate new growth. If you aren’t seeing your usual growth, and you are consuming more than the recommended two drinks a day for women, the two are most likely related.

Is Drinking Alcohol Bad For Your Hair?

In small amounts, alcohol is an acceptable option for most people. However, when you overconsume alcohol, your hair will become very dry which can lead to brittle strands and breakage. Also bear in mind that most women consume their alcohol in mixed drinks with high levels of sugar. Having too much sugar in your diet causes the blood sugar to spike which has been linked with hair loss. Alcohol can also cause you to become dehydrated which will lead to dry strands, and dry scalp related issues such as itchiness and dandruff. The goal is to enjoy your alcohol in moderation to avoid any of the negative consequence to your overall hair health.
