Growing healthy, long natural hair
Everyone has different hair goals on their natural hair journey. Some of us simply want healthy hair whatever the length – we really don’t care. But, for many of us, the ultimate goal is to grow long hair that’s both healthy and strong.
If you have type 4 hair like Zara does, however, you know that its beautiful coils and kinks make it the most fragile of hair types. They effectively make it difficult for sebum (the scalp’s natural waxy and oily substance) to lubricate and strengthen the strands of your hair. As a result, curlier, coilier, and kinkier textured hair is prone to dryness and brittleness, making length retention and the goal of wanting to grow long hair seemingly unattainable.
But, it can be done – as Zara has shown! She uses the five PHRNS principles to share pointers on how to grow long hair, get over those hair growth plateaus, and do so “without a lot of effort.”

Relying on PHRNS to grow long hair fast!
Growing your natural hair fast and long is totally doable when your PHRNS got your back! That acronym stands for:
- P – Protection
- H – Health and Hygiene
- R – Retention
- N – Nutrition
- S – Stimulation
Zara takes us through each principle, how to apply it for hair growth, and its impact on having a healthy hair regimen.
In her careful and knowledgeable manner, she expands on the importance of protecting your hair from factors such as over-manipulation, excess water, heat, and environmental stressors.
Zara then focuses on taking your scalp beyond clean to also having a healthy scalp microbiome. Developing good health and hygiene habits that “enhance the quality and health of the scalp and the hair” can help you get (and keep) the strong, long hair you want!
She explains how a clean, pH-balanced scalp aids hair growth and how to approach certain scalp conditions, such as a scalp fungus.
Pampering and maintaining your hair, especially the ends, helps to ensure length retention. As Zara points out, hair breakage at the rate of growth is why many of us are struggling to get over certain growth plateaus on our natural hair journey. Makes PERFECT sense, right!
