How To Develop a Skincare Routine for Oily Skin – 4 Easy Tips

Everyone’s skin is very different, which means everyone needs something unique to keep their skin in check. In fact, oily skin is one of the most challenging skin types to maintain, and you’re more likely to have breakouts with excessively oily skin. With that in mind, learning how to develop a skincare routine for oily skin is no easy task.

Good to know: Many of the best Black-owned hair care brands also offer skincare products in their lineup. We recently featured Camille Rose, TGIN, Bevel, and lots more!

Causes of Oily Skin

Understanding what causes your skin’s condition is the first step to managing it. You should narrow down the cause of your oily skin before developing your daily skincare routine.

Age

Your age has a lot to do with your skin’s health, and you’ll notice you need less skincare as you get older. For example, you won’t have to worry about maintaining oily skin as much in your 30s as you did when you were a teenager.

Genetics

Having a genetic predisposition to oily skin is the most common cause. In simpler terms, if your immediate family members deal with oily skin, you’re more likely to have it too.

Diet

Fortunately, your diet is something you can easily control. Consuming processed, sugary foods rather than fruits and vegetables is a surefire way to harbor excess oil on your face.

Current Skincare Routine

Believe it or not, your current skincare routine can be the root cause of the excess oil on your face. Overwashing and over-exfoliating do more harm than good, as both processes strip your skin, causing it to produce more sebum to compensate.

Four Tips to Improve Your Daily Skincare Routine

This easy routine is all it takes to keep your skin in good condition. Follow this simple four-step regimen twice a day to keep your skin hydrated, clean, and clear.

1. Cleanse

Adequately cleaning your skin is perhaps the most essential part of your skincare routine. However, you should know that there are unique types of facial cleansers for different skin types, and they aren’t all equal. Cleansing twice each day helps remove excess oil and skin cells to avoid clogging up your pores.

2. Use a Toner

Toners work to remove any additional dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin while also hydrating and refreshing your face. Use one that contains salicylic or lactic acid to help further fight clogged pores and acne.

3. Apply Skin Treatment

This step depends on your unique skin needs; for example, you can use a serum to reduce inflammation if you struggle with skin irritation. However, if you’re prone to acne, you can use a retinol product to keep your pores clear and clean.

4. Moisturize

While you might think you should skip the moisturizer because you have oily skin, that couldn’t be further from the truth. All skin needs hydration, but you should steer clear of moisturizers that contain oil.
