The Best Black-Owned Hair Care Brands to Shop in 2022 – Our Ongoing Series!
By Jacqueline Samaroo
Hey, hey! Welcome to CurlyNikki’s ongoing series featuring a mix of well-known and up-and-coming Black-owned hair care brands.
Each has an identity all its own but they are all connected by a common goal: creating Black hair products that will produce the best results for textured hair. A healthy scalp and hair, leading to curls with tons of definition, hydration, and bounce are what these brands are all about.
And, stay tuned – there are more than 50 companies in the series. We’ll feature a new lineup of Black-owned brands for you each Friday!
Here are the five Black-owned hair care brands we are highlighting for you today.
1. 4C Only
4C Only is the first-ever natural hair care brand dedicated to the tightest of all the curl patterns. Launched in November 2020, it has become one of the most sought-after Black-owned hair care brands, thanks to the niche it proudly serves. Its founders are Tim and Kim Lewis, who also created CurlMix in 2015. Tim and Kim knew there needed to be a line of 4C-focused products but “just adding a collection to CurlMix wasn’t sufficient.” So, 4C Only was born!
BTW, CurlMix was featured earlier in our series!

2. Sassy Hair Cap
Like many other Black-owned hair care brands, Sassy Hair Cap was created out of the need for products that cater specifically to Black hair. It was designed by Bianca Rush who needed a top-quality bonnet for hair of all lengths and textures. She “teamed up with a seamstress, found a manufacturer,” and the Sassy hair cap came into being. Her brand now also sells satin queen pillowcases as another step in caring for all hair types.

Actress and activist Taraji Henson launched her namesake brand in 2020. TPH by Taraji takes a scalp-first approach to natural hair care. This is one of the Black-owned hair care brands that understand hair and scalp issues related to wearing protective styles, such as wigs, weaves, and extensions when caring for your hair and scalp can be a challenge. Henson’s brand is expanding, too. She launched Body By TPH, a body care line, in April 2022.

The range of products offered by Qhemet Biologics covers 3C to 4C hair types.
